Of the five largest fast food corporations in the country — McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Taco Bell (Yum! Brands) and Wendy’s — Wendy’s stands alone as the only one who has refused to join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ Fair Food Program, a unique partnership among farmers, farmworkers, and retail food companies that ensures fair wages and working conditions for farmworkers.
Rather than step up for human rights, and in spite of the calls of their customers — especially students, who have launched a national boycott of Wendy’s — to join the Fair Food Program alongside all its major competitors,Wendy’s appears to have run from responsibility, shifting its tomato purchases away from Florida so that now, in the words of one company representative, the Fair Food Program “does not apply to Wendy’s.”
We know it’s only a matter of time before Wendy’s joins its competitors in supporting the most respected human rights program in the U.S. today, because, in the end, if Wendy’s doesn’t make the right call, consumers will. And when consumers decide, greed doesn’t get to win, dignity does.
