In recent months, Spain has been bullying Gibraltar and its inhabitants in a dispute over the rocks Sovereignty.
Gibraltar, a small peninsula off the South coast of Spain, is currently under British administration from when it was captured during the
War of the Spanish Succession by an
Anglo-
Dutch fleet in the name of
Charles VI of Austria, the
Habsburg pretender to the Spanish throne. At the war's end, Spain ceded the territory to
Britain under the terms of the
Treaty of Utrecht of 1713.
Spain has tried several times to go back on the terms of the treaty and has illegally blockaded and bombarded the peninsula.
Gibraltar, now a British Over-Seas Territory, is under seige again at its ports by Spanish civilian fishing vessles and
Guardia Civil vessles. Its on-land boarders are under seige by
Guardia Civil who are stopping traffic going into and coming out of Gibraltar, causing traffic disruption at the boarder of Gibraltar which is causing delays of up to 4 hours.
Spanish vessles, while blockading the boarders around Gibraltar are illegally fishing in Gibraltars territory.
One occasion saw the Guardia Civil shoot at a civillian jet skier off Gibraltar. An act that could have trigger a war.
It is our moral duty to protest against the Spanish Government over their deplorable treatment of Gibraltar, its citizens and its sovereignty.
