Every year Australians waste about $10 billion worth of food. The waste begins on the farm, where quality fruits and vegetables are rejected due to cosmetic flaws, and continues right through to the household where large amounts of ugly, unwanted and leftover food are thrown out.The Ugly Apple Campaign is inspired by French supermarket Intermarché’s commitment to reduce food waste by selling non-calibrated and imperfect fruits and vegetables cheaper at its supermarket chains. The campaign, aptly named “the inglorious fruits and vegetables” was hugely successful in rehabilitating and glorifying cosmetic imperfections. This movement was also diffused into the Australian market, with Woolworths and Harris Farm following suit in their own cosmetic food waste initiatives last year.It is estimated that 40% of fresh produce are rejected by supermarkets for cosmetic imperfections, affecting the business and income for many local farmers and producers. While current criticisms are centred on blaming supply chains, this attitude towards imperfect looking food prevails in households due to lack of education and awareness, leading to many food wasted due to slight visual imperfections or damage.Fortunately you can do something about it! The Ugly Apple is passionate about food and wants all food to be recognised and consumed for their real value. We will aim to spread awareness on the issue of food waste, the value of your blemished and misshapen food (particularly fruits and vegetables), and provide practical tips and information on food expiry dates and storage. We are passionate about helping young Australians identify “good food” from “spoiled food” and to help reduce the unnecessary food waste with easy simple tips. Help The Ugly Apple create a more sustainable food culture and show more love to your food!
