Product description
NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILE
Amazon.com
After so many years of so many haphazard, oft-overdubbed, slapdash Hank Williams reissues, this lavish package seems truly an embarrassment of riches. Imagine being able to dip in and listen to the unadorned music from the whole of this pioneer's musical career, along with preserved historical spoken words. His career truly represents the major turning point in country music's history, and this box set--music and densely packed attendant memorabilia--is as much a social history of America at mid-20th century as it is a music document. Williams's recording career lasted only six years and he died tragically at age 29, but he left a musical and emotional legacy that grows year by year. To sketch the basics of The Complete Hank Williams: There are 10 CDs encompassing 225 cuts from all parts of his career--the demos, the radio shows, the Opry debut triumph. Musical revelations abound.... --Chet Flippo
Review
...[D]espite all the vinegary vigor and unique inspiration Williams' best music contains in abundance ... anyone plowing through this box of music ... will ultimately be left a little bored and not a little put off by its revered subject. -- Entertainment Weekly
Apart from a few cuts, this sizable set is musically satisfying and historically fascinating. -- People
His rise and complete dominance, his excellence, and his hard fall and death are chronicled in this boxed set, which is as near to being the alpha and omega of Williams's work as we are likely to get. The set includes an excellent booklet with rare photographs and a fine essay on the recordings by the writer Colin Escott, and imaginative, if slightly gimmicky, packaging. -- New York Times
The exhumation that Hank's acolytes desire began long before this beautiful box set. In the '80s, his label brushed off the "spew" of posthumous overdubs. Now, The Complete Hank Williams, packaged like a holy book with a concordance by Colin Escott, makes the purification total. Hank's as fresh as Lenin on may Day, ready for viewing, the key to country's red-dirt past and sign of a rock world to come. -- Spin

- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2009It's odd that I should mention the word "still" in regards to this majestic release. Back in 1998 this was essentially the complete work of Hank Williams Sr. in one box until more acetates were discovered, carefully remastered and released in 2008.
There's a lot beyond the ten discs which feature most of his work and various appearances. There are even alternative takes in case you thought one version was enough. Add to that a complete book that details the man and his music. Well, not just one book, though. The second book within the case not only serves as the holder of the ten discs but also provides some other details about the individual tracks and some more historic artwork concerning the various album covers, photos and other memorabilia. And the postcards are also a neat treat of various pop art and other interesting pictures based on Hank Williams Sr. printed on glossy cardstock. I doubt you'll be mailing those out, though. They're securely stored away within the box cover's inside envelope.
I mentioned that this is "still" the collection to get. It is for it is a complete retrospective of Hank William Sr.'s career. But then, in 2008, after some legal wrangling as well as a very careful remastering job of some discovered "Mother's Best" acetates, more recordings were found. These extra recordings form the basis for The Unreleased Recordings. What a difference a decade makes!
For anyone who wants to get a great amount of Hank Williams Sr.'s work but is stymied by all of the releases out there both this and The Unreleased Recordings offers up everything and more. That's not to say that the "Complete" collection is incomplete. For 1998 these were considered much of the body of his work.
Who knows? Maybe there are more acetates which were steered away from the dumpster. Even so this "Complete" box set is worth every penny. It is a breathtaking boxset in not just the music but its history as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2024Dad absolutely loved Hank Sr's music, and these CDs brought joy to the last years of his life. RIP pops.
It is now part of my collection and bringing me joy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2006I am very proud to have the box set.
Any country fan, regardless new or classic must have this box set. for several reasons:
A. Hank was and still is one of the foundations of influences of the artists that came after his short run (less than 6 years).
B. To enjoy the song writing craft that Hank was gifted with.
C. A clean marketing deal from the record company by releasing the complete Hank recordings. Lucky for us, No greedy marketing scam by releasing the complete set in installments.
D. Heck a lot of Hank's songs have been covered over and over again by stars from the 50's all the way to today. So it is a great chance for you to hear the original recording.
I do agree with some previous reviewers that the packaging is nicely made, as the CDs are inside a book about Hank, with a number of photos. The only downside to the packaging is that it might actually scratch the CDs. but it and Ipod it.
In the end, I truly enjoy listening to the box set, and I certainly do hope you do too.
All the best,
Nawaf
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2014This is a fantastic collection. The booklet and packaging are first rate. The main reason I bought this, as I have many many Hank Williams' CDs, was for the solo (demo) recordings. I thought that there would be maybe one or two CDs of this stuff but it is nearly half the collection. And every one of these recordings is spine-chillingly good. Just a man and a guitar and more conviction and authority in that voice that I have heard in any other performer. It is also proof that as a recording artist he really didn't have any bad days. House of Gold, Drifting Too Far From the Shore, Cabin of Glory ... song after song that I had never heard before with just Hank and his guitar. Unbelievable really that a lot of these recordings have never really been out in the public realm until this box set appeared. Most of these songs sound like they were recorded in the middle of the deepest darkest night when the rest of the world is dead asleep and Hank is a singing lighthouse working to keep our souls afloat until the next new dawn.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2005better then i could have ever imagined i thought i knew Hank but i didnt know didiley till i got this set some old tracks like 2 out of the whole set a bit scracthy but good lord they are over 50 years old what do you expect there are some tracks on here where Hank is speaking to a radio audience they are worth the price themselves plus its a good way to drive the family crazy on long drives. The included books and pictures are also worth the price of admission if you are a fan like me you have got to own this
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015Hank Williams was the greatest country songwriter, and performer of all time, yet a tragic figure. This boxed set captures all of him long before and during his Nashville years. From the raw recordings to the studio produced...they are all great. This voice of sadness, wry humor and pathos is recorded well here. This set is well worth the hefty price for anyone who is country.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2009Whoo-wee!! If you like Hank get this before it is a long gone daddy! This tremendous box-set puts most box-sets to shame. Not only do you get 10 CDs with 225 recordings but also a book (over 100 pages) that has some photos I ain't never seen. The photos of some of Hank's possessions really do hearken to a simpler time but the music is as sophisticated as ever recorded. Do not deprive yourself!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2015Hank was. Sr. was my favorite that is why I purchased the box of CDs. Some of them were so badly copied that I was upset as the price was high for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monumental
Rock'n'roll Hank Williams ? Ecoutez "Move it on over".
