I like the size and does recharge the battery. However the one time I tried to jump start a vehicle with a weak battery this was not up to the challenge.

This charger is not for all batteries. In fact, I purchased this item, in the middle of 2017, for my car battery, but I learned from the technician, that because my battery is "sealed" (which means you don't need to add water) then this is the wrong battery for me. The webpage did NOT indicate this, and so I bought it. Now...months later, today, Feb 16, 2018, I am trying to use it, and called Schumacher for advice on how to read the needle on the display, and I was informed that I bought the wrong charger. Anyway...the needle is not for getting the battery's level of charge; the needle is for viewing the RATE of which the battery is GETTING charged.

If you CALL Schumacher (below) before you purchase...you will save yourself lots of time, aggrevation, and money.

There's nothing as good a feeling as having a means to charge your car battery, particularly when you live alone.

Manual chargers can cook your battery if you have them connected too long, while automatic chargers may not charge a car battery if there's too little of a charge in the battery; the automatics need to detect some type of charge already existing in the battery. This unit is both manual and automatic, so if your battery is 100% dead, you hook it up to this unit and choose manual. When your battery has significant charge, you switch it over to automatic, and leave it alone; it will shutoff when your battery is fully charged!

Having spoken with Shumacher technical support today, I found that all you need is about 1 volt of charge remaining on the battery, and the automatic feature can be used.

Also, this unit can be hooked up to your car battery, while your battery is still in your car, and it will jump your car...just like another car! That's the issue I mentioned earlier, about living alone. You don't need a family member or neighbor to jump start your car...just a long extension cord!

This unit is not a battery maintainer.

This is my 3rd Schumacher charger. The original one lasted over 10 years, not bad, so when it died I bought another one, this time a 100 amp version instead of just replacing the lower capacity one I had previously. Perhaps a big mistake. The first 100 amp charger received over a week ago. Problem was it simply didn't work. Put it on a deep cycle battery about 60% discharged and nothing. Poor design of this version is there is no "power on" light so its impossible to tell if the unit was even getting power. But after plugging the unit into outlets confirmed to have power, it was apparent the unit was defective. So back it went. The next unit this supplier sent me caused concern even before opening the box. While the amazon box arrived in pretty good shape, the Schumacher box the charger came in was in such bad shape that I expected the worst when I opened it. And my expectations were correct. The metal housing of the unit was deformed and outright bent in a couple of places. Not terribly, but it was obvious the housing had become misshapen. And the powder coating had broken off in a couple of places where the housing had gotten bent/creased. Plus he front control panel had come lose from all the other abuse the case had been subjected to, it now rocks back and forth when you move the switches. This product was obviously a repack when the distributor had promised to send me a new one. No one bothered to QC the unit before it was sent out. I'd send this one back but I'm getting tired of all the time and hassle of having to file a complaint, then having to rebox the unit and drive to a UPS store for return shipment. Haven't had a chance to try the charger on a discharged battery yet because I had the battery charged at my local auto parts store, so I have no idea if this unit will perform any better when its time to charge the battery again. But I won't be terribly surprised if this unit does just as poorly as the last one. Schumacher used to make a decent series of chargers. Very sorry to see how badly the quality of the product has deteriorated. And sorry to see how sloppy the distributor was in sending me a beat up product that clearly should never have been shipped out in the first place.

The Unit arrived in good time but packaging was somewhat damaged, though the Unit itself seemed to be unscathed. The Owners Manual contains no sketches of any kind so that it is necessary to go with a fine comb through the entire text in order to learn the controls and settings. Based on past experiences with Jump Starters I expected this Unit to be portable and to be able to use this feature should the occasion call for it. However, this Unit has to plugged into an AC outlet in order to use its features. So this is not the kind of Unit one stores in a car rather keeps it in a garage or wherever one is near an accessible AC outlet. The cable clips are of medium size rather than the heavy duty type.
