Even if the sound is rather poor (I know much poorer ones...), because this is a private recording, made with a portable recorder on the knees - this is the sound-photography of a very memorable evening in a wonderful series of DON CARLO performances in the Verona Arena in August 1969, featuring both Domingo and Caballe for the first time there.
I was lucky enough to be there in one of these performances - and this was -believe me- really great! I never in my live will forget this performance!!
All main singers (except Petkov, who is not bad, but cannot reach the hights of the real stars) have been in splendid vocal condition. The typical Arena athmosphere (with all it's typical noises and "Bravi") is captured here. But much more important:
The voices of Caballe, Domingo, Cossotto and Cappuccilli give You so much pleasure to hear, that all the sound circumstances don't count.
I am really happy to have this recording and I am grateful to the publishers! Thank You, Opera D'Oro!
One little random remark: The recording was made on August 2nd - not July 2nd! It was the premiere of Jean Vilar's staging.

I'm afraid this is another Opera d'oro where what SEEMS to be a superb performance by a stellar cast is absolutely sunk by the source of the recording, which in this case appears to be a tape recorder in the undulating lap of a zealous pirate, whose inappropriate cheers are only the worst of the distractions. You always take your chance with this label, which is the reason why I welcome the opportunity to spare others from my mistake. Under these circumstances, it's superfluous to try to comment on the quality of the performance except to say that it was probably memorable.

Not worth the trouble or cost to get this. It is well conducted by Abbado. But the sound quality is only ok. It sounds muted and distant. It seems like a pretty good performance but to me it's a bit of a trial to get through the sound quality. It's great that it's the 'complete' 1866 full boat score etc. The recording must be a house deal. What I wouldn't've given to have this done by La Scala recording engineers. Good job but handicapped by the sound.

This performance of Don Carlo is very exciting indeed, with both singers and audience overheated. The sound quality is unfortunately awful (private recording from the first or second row) but don't let this put you off, especially if you already own a studio recording. Another excellent release from Allegro.
