Product Description

South Korea is a land rich in cultural heritage and esoteric beauty that somehow remained far removed from the Asian tourist trail. Since 1998, when the Olympic Games put Seoul on the international map, the county's profile has grown, but despite this, the "Hermit Kingdom" still remains an unexplored gem.

Globe Trekker Ian Wright starts his journey in the South Korean capital, Seoul. He takes in the delights of the Gyeong-dong market and tries his hand at Tae Kwon-Do with the national team. After a night out in Seoul, Ian heads north to the North - South Korean Border to experience military power at its most dramatic at the DMZ. Ian's journey then takes him south to Jinbu, where he seeks solace and serenity with the Buddha at the Woljeongsa Temple. Next he visits the village of Hahoe and Pusan, Korea's second largest city where he attends the Jagalchi fish market. From Busan he travels to Cheju Island, famous for the Haenyo, women free-divers who hunt for fresh fish and sea life daily.

My wife and I visited South Korea for several weeks between December 1996 to January 1997. I have been a Taekwondo Instructor for more than forty years, and had long wanted to visit Korea. I had the opportunity to study with Korean Masters, and to teach classes for their students in downtown Seoul. I first saw this Globe Trekker documentary on television, and enjoyed it enough to order. I share it with my students and parents at my Dojang in the U.S. I lost my first disk, so I ordered another, and have enjoyed watching it many times. There were so many locations, history, and cultural experiences revealed in this video that matched our experiences when we were there, including when my wife and I talked with the traditional lady divers on Cheju Island. I would highly recommend this video to anyone who is interested in learning about South Korean history, culture, and daily life.

We acquired this movie in support of a young man deployed and stationed in South Korea.

Upon learning that Michael would be soon leaving us to travel to this beautiful country, we decided to acquire the DVD to learn where he would be spending the next year of his life.

We are glad to have shared this experience, we learned much about the country, its people, folkloric dance, foods and religion.

If you plan to travel to South Korea or want to learn about this country, then this DVD is an excellent choice.

This was a very entertaining glimpse at Ian Wright's travels in Korea, however we were actually looking for more of a guide to Korea, what to see, where to stay, and he mostly makes fun of things, does unusual things that most of us will never get to do, but I didn't rate it lower because for an entertaining travelogue type of video, its fine.

Don't waste your money on this DVD. It has a British guy as the lead and all he does is try to be funny. He is not, but he is very irritating. I am sure there is a better disc on travel to Korea and I am sure to find it.

3.0 out of 5 stars no creativity, too typical.

The guy in the DVD took the extremely cheapest way of travelling Korea so does not show much of the country. the accommodation he stayed, train and 11 hours ferry... they are all what people normally try to avoid. this DVD needs to change the name to 'how you can travel South Korea when you don't have a penny'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless

This is a worthless product. Here is why:
    1. It is very short. I would pay less than £5 for this DVD. There is almost no information compared to what could be said about this country. 50 minutes split between presentations of several cities in Korea... ridiculously superficial.
    2. This guy (Ian Wright) is an impertinent fool. He has no cultural sensitivity or manners for that matter. His behaviour is worthy of a circus, not a documentary about one of the oldest countries in the world. (eg. there is one scene in which he visits a buddhist temple and finds a well filled with water. He explains the misticism and symbolism of the well, after which he plunges his head into the water shaking it violently and girgling in a supposedly humorous manner, which in fact is nothing but inappropriate and even offensive)

I returned this product and I will never buy anything done by these people... Horribly disappointing.
