- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2016This is awesome. I bought a projector and 12 foot screen off amazon and this was the best movie I have ever seen on the big screen. The HD quality and the pure size of the explosions make for some great TV. Turn off all the lights and sit back. On top of all that it is full of great information and would make an attention holding educational event for tweens and young teens. PS: After watching this buy an EPSON HD projector and 12 foot screen (Electric Motor Version Is Better) and watch it again. Go BIG

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2019A well done documentary that goes through several of the projects within the US during the development of our nuclear capabilities. The projects discussed in the video were pursued for peaceful purposes, although most did not go very far due to the negative side affects that they came with (e.g. radioactive fallout). The documentary has some great footage of subterranean explosions along with very dramatic music and sound effects.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2014Interesting information, much of which I, and I suspect most people, have never heard of, such as underground tests in Mississippi! But there is so much fluff and filler material, the whole thing could have been viewed in 3/4 of the time. Which is too bad, since more information could have been included. The interviews were done well, apparently truthful and neutral testimony from experts involved in the agencies responsible for the tests and the tests themselves. I knew that underground tests were conducted next to faults that were created by earthquakes that happened only a few years before. As far as I know, no earthquakes were triggered. However, I didn't know about the 5Mton Cannikin test under Amchitka Is. in the Aleutian chain, which did result in earthquakes over a span of months after the explosion. The Good Friday earthquake that all but destroyed downtown Anchorage, AK occurred in the same year, 1968. I didn't catch the month of the test, so I can't say whether there could have been a causal relationship between the 2 events. About half the worldwide nuclear tests were conducted by the US. What do we know about the others, in the USSR and China particularly? This is a topic not even touched upon. The ominous music was way overdone. It sounded like the track of one of those low-budget 1950's sci-fi monster flicks, all whooshing brass, gongs included. Very annoying. I don't see why anyone could have felt this was a "liberal" propaganda film. I thought the tone was very apolitical and frank, scary sound effects notwithstanding. After all, nuclear tests are a scary topic for conservatives and liberals alike. So what's the issue?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2023Highly recommended if you are into this.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2003Greatly disappointed by this purchase, and certainly would never call this a documentary. Instead, it is a collection of footage with no timeline, context, nor reason. The producer seems content to move from test to test, providing absolutely no understanding of the public, US political, or international forces leading to these amazing tests; there is no attempt to understand how these tests shaped any US or international policies. Instead, it appears the US atomic testing program was conducted by a bunch of curious, "Gee, let's try this, Verne" nuclear hackers with no accountability to anyone but themselves.
Sorry - maybe I've been spoiled by BBC and PBS quality documentaries. But "Atomic Journeys" is no journey at all. More like a childish merry-go-round.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2017Seen all the Atomic Series DVD's...'Atomic Journeys' is one is one of the best!
The 'Atomic Filmmakers' DVD was interesting since I am an photographer myself. 'Nukes in Space' DVD is good. Each DVD has something the others don't. If you only see one, 'Trinity' is best all rounder. Also see 'Uranium', BBC's 'Hiroshima' and 'White Light Black Rain.'
Don't forget the extras. Enjoyed the poetic story of the end of the Plym in England's Operation Hurricane on 'Atomic Journeys'
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2014I'm a complete lay-person with no scientific knowledge of nuclear testing, but I found this really interesting. I had no idea there had ever been any testing in the U.S. east of the Mississippi, and I had never seen any footage at all of the results of underground testing. The effects on the surface are staggering, even when the device is 2,000 feet down and embedded in bedrock. And who ever would have thought that nuclear explosions were once considered for excavation/construction purposes? Need a canal, no problem, just set off a nuke... saves time and money, right? That option was actually considered back in the day.
Engrossing program for anyone who has any interest at all in the effects of nuclear testing. Not preachy, no real "sides" are taken, just a lot of fascinating declassified footage and some discussions with experts in the field. (There's even one good chuckle, in fact... after some discussions of the Cold War, watch the end credits: the background music was provided by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra!)
