Chick Corea has spent quality time in even more stylistic camps than his onetime boss, Miles Davis: postbop, chamber settings, free jazz, classical music, full-bore (and sometimes fully boring) fusion. During the pianist's stay with ECM in the '70s and early '80s, a period documented by his single-disc entry in the label's anthology series, his wingspan was not quite as wide. A good half of :rarum 3, which boasts selections and liner notes by Corea, consists of tracks by his adventurous trio of bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes, originally heard on Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968) and here reunited after more than a decade. Ranging from brief group improvisations to a 14-minute medley of "Summer Night" and "Night and Day," they are lifted by their intriguing blend of personalities. But the heart of the collection resides in Corea's immaculate lyrical duets with vibraphonist Gary Burton and two numbers with the original lineup of Return to Forever. So much music has flowed under Corea's name, it's easy to overlook the simple, infectious charms of this band, which featured Corea on electric piano, the late Joe Farrell on flute and soprano sax, then-young Stanley Clarke on bass, and the husband-wife team of vocalist Flora Purim and percussionist Airto Moreira. ECM's 24-bit/96mHz remasterings, a first for the label, enhance the freshness of these recordings. --Lloyd Sachs

After buying a couple of the Rarum series ( the ECM label's compilations, with the selections chosen by the artists)I decided that I would give Chick Corea a try.I already owned his piano improvisations volume one but was unsure about the rest of his work. What a pleasure then to find yet another great collection of music.
Perhaps suprisingly Corea's selections here come from only five of the fourteen albums he recorded for ECM, plus the five albums were recorded by only three groups.Firstly we have two delightful tracks from Return to Forever Corea's Fusion band from 1973 ( including Flora Purim,Joe Farrell ,Airto Morea and Stanley Clarke on some amazing double bass)and what gentle, thoughful music compared to so much of what was called fusion. The rest of the disc is divided between his duo work with Gary burton on vibes and his trio with Miroslav Vitous and Roy Hanes.
Corea has a wonderfully delicate ,almost understated keyboard style and his work with Gary Burton or when bouncing ides of Miroslav Vitous is dynamic yet always lyrical. This disc provides us with an overview of Chick Corea's work that is consistent and thoughtful.
In all this is an elegant and powerful collection of music by a great composer and wonderful musician.
    Highly recomended

The 'Rarum' series is only the second batch of compilation albums issued by the ECM label. In the mid 1980's at the advent of the compact disc, ECM issued its first ever batch of artist compilations titled 'Works", or "ECM Works" (as they are sometimes referred to.
The 'Rarum' series has a few advantages in general: they have actually been selected by the artists themselves (in most instances where the artist was still living at the time) and are much longer than the 'Works" series. The "Works" series was also issued on vinyl LPs at the time (though not originally here in America), so the running time was kept between 42-50 minutes for all of the compilations brought out in the first, original run of the series. So with 'Rarum' you do get more music.
But, oddly, in many cases I find that the artists don't always do such a great job of selecting the best of their work for the ECM label, and often don't go for a career overview of their work for ECM, choosing instead their favorite pieces or performances.
In a couple of cases the artists themselves have limited their selections of what to include to albums that they have felt didn't receive the recognition they deserved in light of other more popular albums of theirs.
Such is the case with Chick Corea's 'Rarum' album where Corea decides to focus on only a few of his many albums recorded for the label.
In this case I would certainty say to first attempt to find (or download) a copy of Corea's "Works" compilation. Although a much shorter album, at only 48 minutes, "Works" really does a much better job of giving us true high points from Corea's ECM output and includes (different) tracks from the same albums that Corea selected from for the 'Rarum' compilation, but also selections from fantastic albums overlooked on the later 'Rarum' compilation.
I have all of the 'ECM Works' compilations and many of the 'Rarum' as well and have found this also to be the case with several other of the artists who have issued compilations in both of these 'best of' series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thirteen excellent tracks from Chick Corea's career 1972 - 1984.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2015
Quite frankly I have always been a bit suspicious of Chick Corea. I (mistakenly) assiciated him too much with the jazz-rock fusion period (that is not my cup of tea). Then I caught a track from "Hot House" (duets with Gary Burton (vibes)) a copy of which I purchased and have reviewed favourably on this site. To extend my knowledge I bought this compilation album (I don't normally do compilation albums, but here the tracks are chosen by the artist) which has proved a delight. Corea has chosen thirteen tracks taken from five albums recorded between 1972 and 1984.
Four tracks are duets with Gary Burton (they "go back a long way"), six from a later liaison with pianist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes. The earliest tracks feature drummer Airto Moriera and bassist Stanley Clarke. One track has a vocal by Flora Purim.
The majority of the tunes are Corea compositions; there are a couple of "standards" and three compositions by Monk.
My prejudices have been dispelled; Corea is a fine jazz pianist and plays with great empathy with the other musicians.
    First class album.
