Product description
Rosana Lamosa, soprano - Jose Feghali, piano - Nashville Symphony Orchestra, dir. Andrew Mogrelia, Kenneth Schermerhorn
Amazon.com
This is a three-CD set that includes all of Villa-Lobos' moody Bachianas Brasileiras. The best known is the fifth, for soprano and eight cellos (well performed here), but there is a wealth hidden among the others. There are dance movements galore; the second builds to a wonderfully percussive and powerful final movement; the eighth, despite an upbeat old folk dance as its centerpiece, has a melancholic warmth that is irresistible. The flute and bassoon duet that makes up No. 6 is rich and expressive, and the solo pianist has his work cut out for him in No. 3. All of them show a use of counterpoint that is truly skillful, and these performances--the only complete, modern set, not to mention at a bargain price--bring out all of the delicacies in the music. A real find. --Robert Levine

- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2018I've been listening to Bachianas 2,5,6 and 9 for 40 years or so (the monophonic release with Villa Lobos conducting), and decided to try the complete version. This more recent (stereo) performance has much improved audio quality, and thus allows the listener to perceive many more details of the performances that could not have been readily heard in the old, monophonic version. I also wanted to listen to the other Bachianas, which were not included in the earlier recordings. Of the entire set, 2,5,6,9 are still the most enjoyable for me. I'm sure I'll appreciate some of the "new" ones as I listen to them more. If you enjoy classical music and want to listen to something different, inspired by South American rhythms and melodies, I think you'll find these works quite enjoyable. These modern (20th century) compositions are much more lyrical than many comparable works from European composers of the same period. Imagine an orchestra of cellos!! How sublime. In sum, these works are brilliant, impassioned and often serene.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2013Considering the price of this product, why settle for a compilation of bits and pieces of the Bachianas Brasileiras? Why not get all of them? They are all different and they are all very good. Here, you have all nine, on 3 CDs. Each of the CDs is a pleasure to listen to. I love music with regional flavor and this is classical music with the flavor of Brazil. The musicianship and sound are excellent. Excellent product.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2015I've always loved classical music that didn't sound like the same classical music everyone else was listening to. Growing up in the south by southwest, I learned to love Latin influences - especially in the music and food! If you listen to this and enjoy it like I did, it's like falling in love with TexMex (fajitas!) all over again. If you want something different, you MUST own this collection! It is brilliant!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2012I have heard various versions of some of these works over the years, and the ones I am very familiar with sound well and idiomatically played. The recorded sound seems clean and warm, detailed and spacious. Only having heard a minority of these Bachianas before, I was more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of the lesser known works. More of these should be in the symphonic standard repertoire.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2011I am very, very happy with these discs. The tempi tend to be on the slow side for my taste, but only slightly. On the other hand, having lived with this set for a month or so now, and listened to it several times through, I feel like I know (and love) these pieces better than I ever have before, and understand how they relate to each other. My only experience with the Bachianas previously was the 1950's French version conducted by Villa-Lobos, and I don't think they were available as a complete set. Compared to those versions, the modern recording technique used here lets you hear all the different parts MUCH more clearly; there were entire parts, especially in the low strings and woodwinds, that I simply couldn't hear before. There were also several gems I hadn't heard before. I recommend this set wholeheartedly; for the price it is a huge value.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2011Villa Lobos's Bachianas Brasileias is a beautiful example of the fusion between the Baroque era of Johann Sebastian Bach and the 20th Century. If you have not heard this piece you are in for a treat. The first time I heard this music there was a rainstorm outside, with lighting and thunder punctunating the sounds from my record player. The music is haunting and delicious. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Villa-lobos: Bachanias Brasileiras
Although I do not know much about American orchestras, I thought their interpretation of this exciting work was very good

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Orchestral Playing
Bachianas Brasilieras 3CD’s total playing time 176’14
These recordings were made in March 2004, except for Bachianas #1, recorded in May 2005 with British conductor Andrew Mogrelia. Kenneth Schermerhorn, the orchestra’s Principal Conductor since 1983, died a month previously after a long illness.
#1 1930 For an ‘orchestra of ‘cellos’. The 1st movt. lacks memorable ideas and relies somewhat too heavily on repetitive sequence. The 2nd movt. is a gentle love song, again rather repetitive, but quite lovely. It has echoes of some popular songs, including ‘Gliding Dance of the Maidens’ from Polovetsian Dances in the opera Prince Igor by Borodin (1890) aka ‘Stranger in Paradise’. The 3rd movt. is a syncopated fugue that never really gains momentum. All of it is beautifully played.
#2 1930 For Chamber Orchestra. 1st movt, saxophone solo very languid, solo trombone less ‘laid back’ than in Mata’s recording with the Simon Bolivar Symphony (1994). In the Toccata (Little Train of the Caipira) their train is more ramshackle; this one sounds more suburban than rural.
#3 1938 For Piano and Orchestra. Basically a fully-fledged piano concerto in all but name. 1. Very much reminiscent of Rachmaninov, complete with Dies Irae chant. 2. reminiscent of Prokofiev 3. Much use of repetitive sequence in movts. 1 & 2. The Aria (3) is more Villa Lobos’ own and in the sparkling Toccata (4) his originality comes fully forward. Brazilian pianist José Feghali is outstanding (in 1985 he won the Van Cliburn competition), and his tragic death in 2014 at the age of 53 was a great loss to music.
#4 1930/41 For orchestra. (1) Prelude. In the style of a sentimental pop song, very reliant on sequence. Predominantly written for strings, much care here in shaping phrases and dynamics (2) again much use of sequence. Some very unusual sonorities, including scoring for winds, octave chimes on xylophone and celeste representing the call of the Araponga bird, also known as the Bell bird, and an extraordinary 4 part glissando for horns (3) Brass and winds predominate, excellent horn solo. (4) Trombone solo is beautifully played, section work is outstanding.
#5 1938/45 For Voice and 8 ‘Cellos. Brazilian soprano Rosana Lamosa sings with a little too much vibrato for my liking, and her voice is a little heavy, but in the middle section of the Aria she is very expressive. Her final boca chiusa unfortunately is not totally secure. Victoria de Los Angeles with the composer conducting (Paris, 1958) is perfection throughout. In the Dansa, many birds are present; the poetry by Manuel Bandeira recalls 7 species by name : Irere (Humming bird), Wren, Dove, Oriole, Seedeater, Flycatcher, Thrush, and their calls are imitated in the sung text.
#6 1938 For flute and bassoon. Tempi are almost identical to the performance directed by the composer (Paris 1958). The Nashville players are very expressive, especially in the 1st movt. Aria (Chôro). One might wonder why this piece of quintessential chamber music needs a conductor; there are a great number of notes, but only two time-signatures (1st movt. common time, 2nd movt. cut time).
#7 1942 For Orchestra 27.26. Again some very unusual sonorities. First movement calm and languid, phrasing is seamless. Nice tempo, very expressive bassoon. 2nd movt. low brass great. Quicksilver trombones. Reminds of ‘Somewhere, Over the Rainbow’. The chimes in the 3rd movt. at 2.30 are an extraordinary effect, again it’s the call of the Araponga bird. Scoring is for trumpet, horn and xylophone in unison, each part marked with a different articulation. The 4th movt. is taken at a spacious tempo that allows full expressiveness in the fugue which is in in stretto and inversion, one of Villa Lobos’s finest contrapuntal creations. Trombones 1 & 2 in unison have the 9th entry in stretto and are quite superb. The section at that time was comprised of Lawrence L. Borden Principal, Susan K Smith Assistant Principal and Steven Brown bass trombone.
#8 1944 For Orchestra 24.8 Very fully scored, again with many felicities. It begins somewhat languorously with a full string sound; some very complex textures are then developed, again with some unusual sonorities, great writing for brass. The melody in 2nd movt. is beautifully played by the ‘cellos. Trombone glissandi are prominent in the toccata, high tension is maintained throughout. Low brass is again superb in the dense and complex fugue which concludes this piece.
#9 1944 For String Orchestra (3’ + 7.08’). The fugue in this piece is an inspired piece of writing, and very well-played on this recording, but doesn’t have quite the sense of open-air freedom present in the composer’s own recording (Paris 1958).

5.0 out of 5 stars L'oeuvre de référence de Villa-Lobos
Personnel:
- Nashville Symphony Orchestra dirigé par
Kenneth Schermerhorn et Andrew Mogrelia (No. 1)
- Anthony La Marchina: premier violoncelle
- Erik Gratton: première flûte

- Rosana Lamosa: soprano
