Editorial Reviews

Just about the ultimate cult artist, Bobby Charles was a genuine one-off - a fabulous songwriter and a great singer, who actively avoided pursuing either commercial success or even a regular recording career. This compilation anthologizes his 1950s recordings, comprising the tracks that he recorded for Chess Records between 1956-57, including his original version of 'See You Later Alligator', plus the almost unfeasibly rare half-dozen singles he cut for Imperial in 1958-59, which have never previously been re-released.

Bobby Charles was the first blue-eye soul singer ever! This was before Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel - (See You Later...October 1955). Robert Charles Guidry was a gifted songwriter, whose songs Should have brought him - Fortune & Fame. The Fifties was a time that All youngsters were ripped off. I really enjoyed reading the liner notes and anecdote of Bobby Charles' experiences in the Rhythm & Blues circuit and the segregated times of the mid-50s. Bobby Charles may he Rest In Peace. Truly he was an architect in the Sounds of New Orleans.

If you enjoy swamp pop from the late 50's you love this album. The first 21 cuts are from the Chess catalog and are excellent. Cuts 22-33 are from the Imperial catalog. In my opinion the Imperial sides are not quite as strong as the Chess material but they are not bad. It seems that Imperial tried to make Bobby into a pop singer with the addition of a female chorus on some of the songs. This collection features excellent sound quality as well as a ten page booklet.

A collectors item. Only track I knew is "See you later alligator" covered by Bill Haley. A pity some recordings are not best quality even for the 1950's.After A While Crocodile... The 50s Anthology
