Product Description

The Flyer and its ladies model Flyer S are classically sprung saddles for long distance trekking and touring. It is directly descending from the B66 Champion, first featured in the 1927 catalogue. Sharing the same leather tops of the B17 models, they combine the comfort of these popular models with the extra suspension granted by two rear springs. Both are available with tubular steel rivets or with hand hammered copper rivets under the names of Flyer Special and Flyer S Special.

The Leather is Weak

The Leather is Weak
I wrote the review below shortly after buying the saddle. Now that I have had it for over a year, the leather around the rivets has completely given way even though the leather on the narrower part is stiff. See photos. Makes it a horribly uncomfortable ride and a colossal disappointment. I contacted Brooks hoping for repair or replacement. After 3 separate attempts they finally responded saying the aged leather is weaker than the standard leather and is designed for someone who doesn't ride much and therefore can't break in a normal leather saddle. Seriously? Does it say that anywhere in the description? No. They did not offer to repair or replace it but instead referred me to their service person in the States and said he can replace the leather. Although I have an inquiry in to him I do not expect to follow through with this because I'm sure he'll charge more than the saddle cost me new. Wow, I'm really disappointed in Brooks. Stay away from the aged Flyer!-----------------------------------I'm a die-heard Brooks user. I have 3 B17s but got this in an effort to create a more neck-friendly ride on my 29 mile a day round trip work commute. It's really vintage looking and beautiful. Couldn't believe it was actually cheaper than a B17. I use it on my bike with high (Nitto Albatross) handlebars and with a slight upward tilt to create an upright body position. The stress is noticeably less on the wrists, shoulders, and neck. This saddle looks and feels fantastic and the ride is really smooth; you don't feel the bumps nearly as much as a traditional saddle.

I, like many who are reading the reviews, I'm sure, have heard of the Brooks Saddles being legendary, but expensive. Let me start off by saying when I was in college, I broke my coccyx, which developed really bad tailbone pain from sitting too long, or on a hard surface. Going to a sporting event, especially on bleachers, is a nightmare! Regardless, I have always been anxious riding my bicycle for too long, because of the pain I would usually endure afterwards. When I moved to the city, I started riding my bike way more often, and my hunt for a saddle that wouldn't leave me in pain began. I tried saddles that reduced shock; I tried oddly shaped saddles that didn't press on my tailbone. Ultimately, I started avoiding riding my bike altogether! So, I dug into my wallet, and bought the Brooks Flyer, softened. I knew from the grapevine that the break-in period might hurt, but it would be worth it in the end. I'm not sure if it being "softened" helped any, but this saddle was a Godsend! Previously, a saddle could be comfortable to ride, but painful afterwards; or uncomfortable to ride, but at least there wasn't any pain after the ride! But this saddle - no pain whatsoever! It's easily the best bike saddle I've ever had! I am still breaking it in, there is a little bit of pain, but believe the hype! This saddle is worth it!

Here in Chicagoland, we have really rough roads. The common recommendation for a Brooks saddle for my bike was to go with the tried-and-true B-17. But I'm glad I got this one instead. My first 30 mile ride on my Specialized TriCross left me with VERY sore sit bones, and a painful perineal (prostate) area. That was all it took to make me start seriously considering Brooks.

This saddle is perfect for a bike that will be used on roads and trails that can be a little rough. It is ideal for bikes whose handlebars are about the same height as the saddle. Looking at the photo, one would think that it would be a very bouncy ride. But the springs are stiff. When riding, you don't even realize it is sprung, but it takes the sharp jolt off of the bumps you feel going into your bottom and back.

I'm too happy to carry around the extra weight of the springs. (less than a pound) It means I will ride more, and lose MORE than the one pound from my belly. Why count ounces when we are pounds overweight ourselves? If you're already very thin and have a lightweight bike, it may not be worth it to you. Give this a serious thought before going with the masses and getting a B-17.

You can see pictures of this on my TriCross at the following URL:

So far, I only have about 50 miles on this saddle. It is just starting to get broken in, but even out of the box, it was more comfortable than the stock gel saddle that came with my bike. I can only imagine how good it will be in another couple hundred miles.

Don't forget to also buy a tin of Brooks Proofide along with the saddle. It will speed up break-in and waterproof the saddle.

Excellent saddle that required very short break-in time. Somewhat heavy but the spring suspension system is very helpful on my heavy (55 pound electric) bike made with a stiff aluminum frame. So the added weight penalty is minimal and worth the cost. The design is timeless and very retro/steampunk. So if you are a hipster-poseur, this product will make you look fab(ulous) and is de rigueur, in Portland, OR.
