Fantastic Casual Bag for "Street Walking"

Fantastic Casual Bag for "Street Walking"
Disclaimer: Let me say I am a Think Tank fan for life. I have the Airport International, which I am not a world traveler but I have used it at least three or four times on many trips from Pittsburgh to Florida and back, as well as a 7-day cruise, without issue. I also own the Retrospective 10 and their memory card wallet. I was looking for a small bag, but not too small. One to carry one or two full-frame Nikon bodies and two or three lenses, plus batteries, a flash, etc. I also wanted to be able to EASILY strap on a small tripod, and carry TWO bottles of the the nectar of the gods (Mountain Dew) or other tasty beverages with me on my jaunts. A backpack would be the ideal solution for me, as well as it standing up on its own if possible. Enter Thinktank as usual. I have a Tamrac small to medium photo backback, and this bag is decent. The only problems with this bag is: The bag is shallow. Although I can fit a full-frame camera in the bag, it is kinda tight and could use some breathing room. Only short lenses (like the 50mm, 85mm 1.8) can "stand on end; It does not come with a native built-in beverage holder, never mind two; There is not a real convenient fast way to attach a tripod (although it is doable). Did I say it was shallow? their is no real way to include another extra FF body if I wanted. And it is just getting worn a a little long-in-the-tooth. If you pack this bag, it is so deep you can "stand up" lenses as big as a 24-70 or 24-120. You can lay down a 70-200 and then lay a flash on top of that (I pad between items with the dividers to make "shelves"). So it will feel and be heavier than it actually looks. So this bag can be a very heavy bag. Comparing it to my Tamrac, it would be like doubling the size - looks can be deceiving when almost doubling the depth and using it! I'm not a fan of waist belts, and haven't tried the supplied belt yet. I have shoulder carried this bag a few miles through Florida wetlands with no problems. I use it for short walks and basically as a day bag to haul my stuff for a day or two of shooting. By no means am I a backpacker or do I hike for miles and miles. For my needs this bag is fantastic! Bird and wildlife shooting in the woods nearby, or within a few miles of a nature walk; working bag for events and weddings; small enough to haul back and forth to work for lunchtime walk and shoot around the city, street photography, etc.. I have included a few pics of possible configurations and what I have in my bag. To give you an idea of what can fit. You can't beat the quality and warranty of the Think Tank bags IMHO. Your Mileage and Needs may vary.

I am a photographer and have spent a small fortune on various camera bags over the years. Because I spend most of my time in the field and not in neat studios I am very rough on bags, but I do still expect them to hold up. Most bags I trash pretty quickly, obviously designed by luggage people and not photographers. When I first ran across Think Tank a while back I bought this back pack and fell in love, their stuff is well-designed and extremely durable. I still use this back pack, it's a tank!

On an average shoot in the field I stuff my full size Nikon D800 with 70-200/2.8 attached with a perfect fit. I also can carry my 24-70/2.8 and 14-24/2.8 in there with no problem, and those are not small lenses. I still have room for a 4th and 5th smaller prime lens, gloves, small flashlight, various cleaning items, a few filters, AND still room for a SB900. At this point it's getting pretty full, but there is room and nothing rattles around, it's all securely padded. In the outside pockets I have room for all that stuff that tends to accumulate when you use the bag a lot. I also attach a sturdy tripod on it frequently, best designed system for that purpose I have seen on a bag.

It has been in the blazing hot sun, driving rain, freezing snow and sleet, crapped on by birds, kicked by various animals, and used as pillow when stranded in an airport. Honestly it has held up better than I have sometimes. The best accessory that I bought for it is the camera support straps from Think Tank that attach to it that allow you to clip the camera strap to the backpack and takes the weight off your neck with just the neck strap. It is all well thought out system.

My ONLY issue is minor; I wish it had a place to stuff my iPad. I never go out without my iPad, it is my best camera accessory and even though I do manage to stuff it in here on top of the lenses the bag really is not designed to do that. I bought the bigger version of this for myself recently but it is just too big for every day use.

I like this product so much it has quickly become like a good friend, I joked with my family when I die to have me cremated and put my ashes in this bag, then just drop me off in a favorite photo location. Please keep that in mind if you are out shooting and find one of these under a tree!

This bag is very well built. However, it does not work for me because it sacrifices width for height. That might work for some but I find that you need to make two layers to use the full volume of this bag. The rub is that the depth is not enough to layer 2 lenses horizontally over each other. So, either everything fits vertically or you are wasting space. If you have a lot of lenses that are about 7" long and a couple of bodies about that wide, then this bag will hold amazing amounts of your gear. Otherwise, lots of empty space.

I think the StreetWalker (smaller vertically) or the StreetWalker HardDrive (more vertical space + laptop compartment) will fit most people better than this bag.

This is currently the (almost) perfect bag for me for now. I know this because I have stopped searching for it's replacement.
It holds my current gear securely, with a bit of room for additional items. It's easy to work out of. It's durable. It's comfortable. I believe it will work as a carry-on.

The only thing I would change right now would be to get rid of the side pockets which I don't use, and replace them with molle straps so I could attach what I want when I want to.

It's a great bag. Like I said, I'm no longer looking for a new one, and I've been looking for years. My closet is full of almost-but-not-there bags, but this one isn't going in the closet any time soon. Will everybody agree with me? Nope. But for me, it's pretty much exactly what I need right now.

Over the past 40 years I've been through a dozen backpack camera bags and have never been entirely satisfied until I tried the Think Tank Streetwalker Pro. It is sleek, very well made and somehow manages to hold more gear than larger backpack bags. Here are the features I appreciate most:

    - It stands upright and is stable even a camera is loaded on the top
    - Wraps stow all the strap ends, so there are no dangles.
    - The exterior pockets are very well thought out
    - The tripod carrier really works and leaves loose straps when not in use.
    - It will stow a Nikon 180mm f/2.8 lens vertically
    - Plenty of interior dividers
    - The shoulder straps are very comfortable without being bulky

This is my first camera bag that isn't a "kit" bag. You know, the ones that are bundled with a dozen really cheap accessories. Now, understand I haven't hiked with it for hours on end but for the short jaunts I've taken it is very comfortable. I was blown away by the high quality of the construction. This thing is built like - well a "Tank".

The only problem I've had is finding enough "STUFF" to fill it up. I finally got the main compartment semi-full by packing in a Nikon D300 with 16-85mm lens attached, a Nikon 70-300mm lens, a Nikon 50mm F1.8, a Nikon SP-800 Speed Flash, a Canon 60D with 15-85mm lens attached, older 135mm and 50mm Pentax lenses I use in manual mode when taking video with the Canon, lens adapters for the Pentax lenses and a plethora of battery chargers and cords, filters, memory cards, camera and flash batteries, and other misc stuff. This one bag pretty much holds every bit of photo gear I own. It even has a snazzy set up for toting your tripod.

5.0 out of 5 stars sollte jeder ambitionierte Fotograf haben und nutzen!
Reviewed in Germany on April 19, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Uno zaino compatto e capiente
Reviewed in Italy on March 20, 2013

5.0 out of 5 stars 400mm/2.8 lens + big DSLR
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2017
Think Tank Street Walker Pro Version1. The names of these backpack type models can be confusing as they are very similar. Although the word "backpack" appears in the description, it is not included in the real name of the product if you look on Think Tank's official website. The Think Tank Street Walker Pro is a backpack. The Think Tank Street Walker Pro is ideal for big a DSLR like a Canon 1D series camera attached to a 400mm/f2.8 lens. The front hood on the lens must be reversed. There is also enough space for the Canon lens hood cover to be over the front of the lens with the lens hood reversed. With this combo the backpack is full and there is no place for anything else in the main compartment. You would have to remove all the dividers. The dividers have velcro. I managed to squeeze in a divider as extra padding between the camera back and the inside of the bag. The bag quality is very good and the zippers are strong. There are several small pockets and a rain cover as well as tripod attachment straps. This is a great bag for me as I can fit my big lens and body in the overhead of the smaller commuter jets. The standard Canon case is way too big and cumbersome. If you travel a lot this bag is fantastic. The shoulder straps are very comfortable and adjustable. It is a great back that fits very comfortably on your back. I prefer not to display my gear all the way from my car to where I am shooting. With this neat bag I can walk all the way to the shooting venue and most people you are walking past won't even know you are carry a big lens and a big camera body. The top carry handle is strong and secure and the grip is comfortable and easy to carry. This bag is also great for a 70-200mm lens, a big body, another lens, and a flash, with some space. I highly recommend this bag.
