Product Description

The successor of ALCEST's highly acclaimed debut album "Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde" is entitled "Écailles De Lune". A masterpiece of Shoegaze (Dark) Metal / Post Rock and available in two versions, Regular Edition jewel case and a special Digibook Edition.

Review

If any proof were needed that anticipation was at a fever pitch for Alcest's second full-length album, it could be found in the fact that a clever leak of Écailles de Lune that made the rounds before its release was rabidly snapped up worldwide even though most of the tracks came from a compilation of Chinese black metal acts. But the fact that it was treated as the real thing shows how strong Alcest's own aesthetic mark has been made already, and Écailles de Lune makes the most of its compelling fusion of black metal's theatricality and the after-echoes of shoegaze's propensity for utterly enveloping a listener, even if bandleader Neige approached that sound unconsciously at first. The first half of the two-part title track that begins the album starts with a gentle guitar chime before the full skyscraping riff kicks in, but -- instead of getting even more intense as it goes -- it's happy to turn even more elegantly beautiful, letting moments of strutting rock brawl feel more like exaltation than destruction. Neige's singing is some of his loveliest at many points throughout the album, a soft keen toward the middle of the second half of the title track, a low and contemplative rumination elsewhere -- if not notably different from his earlier work in approach, it's at its most enjoyable here, and perhaps at its most beautifully serene on "Solar Song," vocals overlaid to lovely effect. In contrast to how Justin Broadrick's work in Jesu feels like brutal songs gone blissed-out, here it feels like calmly performed songs given sometimes full-speed accelerants that never lose a central grace, even when Neige's vocals turn into a familiar hollow rasp and wail --Ned Raggett - All Music Guide

I was skeptical when I first discovered Alcest. Being informed that it was a major key black metal-esque album with shoegaze elements, I expected to hate it. I'm not a huge fan of the new indie/post-rock black metal style, and generally find it quite boring. However, with this album I was pleasantly surprised upon first listen, and blown away upon repeat listens.

The highlights of the album are the first three tracks. All of them have a very triumphant feel to them in the more metal inspired parts, yet a dreamlike feel in the softer parts. In fact, during the quieter passages, Alcest reminds me of the occult-inspired Goth Rock band Fields of the Nephilim on their seminal "Elizium" album. The end result obtained are foggy visions of a vast meadow in spring. Not the normal feeling one expects from something people refer to as "black" metal.

All in all, this is a beautiful album that I can listen to in almost any situation and feel inspired. The musicianship is top-notch, the melodies stay with you, and the images they evoke in the minds eye are incredible.

    Thumbs up!

This album introduced me to this black metal/shoegaze scene. Prior to hearing of alcest if anyone said Black Metal and Shoegaze in the context of the same music, I would have looked at them and said "What?" I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who listens to heavy metal primarily, and this has easily become one of my favorite metal albums. Heavier than the previous Alcest release the entire album is haunting and mystifying. Unlike a lot of listeners I hope to hear more of the black metal growls visited by this album, as to me as a metal fan, this layered on the complex and haunting melodies of the music creates a powerful, emotionally charged environment that exemplifies how heavy loud music can also be beautiful. If your not into black metal, the shrieked vocals are sparse, and the clean vocals are more prominent in the music. The guitar work is layered and complex, but also finds demonstrates melodic, memorable metal riffs rather than a messy haze of sound.

Seeing all the hype this release was getting last year made me wonder what this band had to offer.
So I went here and grab a copy, and Im glad I did. From the first listening experience I fell in love.
Being a extreme metal fan, I also enjoy artists who tries to reach another level of musicality without compromise their artistic integrity. What we hear in this record is AMAZING, a truly emotional trip from the very beggining to the last track. Lot of great melodies, vocals alternating from the harsh black metal to the beautiful clean post-rock oriented vocal, with a dense atmosphere. Great album, BUY IT SUPPORT THE BAND!

This CD is not just a CD, but an experience....something I don't get out of bands very often. I was first introduced to Alcest by the kind folks at internet radio "Death FM" and their rotation of "Solar Song". Solar Song is just....breathtaking. I love BM/grind/death metal all equally and still feel confident recommending this dic to anyone. Absolutely stunning....the artwork looks like the music sounds, definitely otherworldly. Escailles De Lune starts off more black metal but finishes more of a gazey etheral feel. Fans of everyone from Emperor to Dead Can Dance will enjoy this. Always in rotation in my player!

This is a great album. I have a lot of patience for music, which comes in handy here, as the album tends to wander off into la-la land. Not that it's a bad thing, but the easily distracted need not apply. It is a tough album to place, as half of it is black metal (sort of) and half is pure shoegaze. I say sort of black metal because the vocals are black metal-ish, as is some of the riffing, but the lyrical content is about as far as you can get from black metal. Even Niege, the mastermind of this record, says the vocals are intended to sound 'otherworldly' and not black metal-ey. So call this black metal with extreme caution.

That said, this is a very enjoyable album. It's about Neige's wonderful fairy land (no, seriously), and is pretty lighthearted for how intense the music can be at times. There are, as mentioned above, some distinct BM influences (trem picking with distortion, shrieks) as well as some straight shoegaze influences (mid-tempo melodies, doom-inspired clean vocals).

It is a very listenable album, though I it starts to peter off towards the end. The first three tracks are pure awesomeness though. If you are a black metal purist, you will probably hate this album. If you are a shoegazer, well, hopefully the BM vocs don't make you pass out. Great album for painters.

When I listen to this album I can see the stars in the night sky as I lay with my woman drifting down a lazy River on a cool summer night. It transports you to another place and time.
