Add one of the top 3 must-have kitchen knives to your collection with the Shun Classic 6-inch Ultimate Utility Knife. This cooking knife features an unusually wide blade with a rounded tip perfect for spreading mayo. Low-frequency serrations on the blade are ideal for slicing delicate, thin-skinned fruits and vegetables or working like a bread knife to cut a sandwich in half without tearing. Utility knives are also called sandwich knives because they work well for almost every task involved in making a sandwich – from cutting thin-skinned vegetables like tomatoes to preparing meats and cheeses. The Classic Utility Knife is constructed with Shun's proprietary VG-Max cutting core with 68 layers of stainless Damascus cladding for a strong, corrosion-resistant, stain-resistant, razor-sharp 16-degree edge that glides through food. The D-shaped, ebony-finished Pakkawood handle is durable, beautiful, comfortable for both left- and right-handed users, and doesn't harbor bacteria. In Japan, the blade is more than a tool -- it's a tradition. Housed in Seki City, the heart of the Japanese cutlery industry, Shun Fine Cutlery is dedicated to maintaining this ancient tradition. Each knife is handcrafted by highly skilled artisans to produce blades of unparalleled quality and beauty. We also leverage modern, premium materials and state-of-the-art technology to provide Shun quality to millions of professional chefs and avid home cooks throughout the world.

The scalloped-edge, six-inch blade on this Shun Classic knife is so sharp it slices effortlessly through everything from a soft tomato to a crusty loaf of bread. Add the rounded tip for spreading mayonnaise, and the Ultimate Utility becomes the ultimate sandwich-maker that every kitchen needs. Not only does the knife work hard, it looks stunning, from the shiny black handle to the shimmering ripples on the Damascus-style blade. Already gift-boxed, this knife will be hard to give away.
Shun knives, made in Japan by KAI (Kershaw Cutlery), are quite possibly the sharpest knives on the market. The acute 16 degree angle of Shun edges won't bend or waver due to the hardness of the VG-10 steel core used in their construction. Clad with 32 layers of high-carbon stainless steel (16 on each side), the blades resist rusting and maintain their razor edge for a considerable time. The handles are made of a resin and hardwood fusion known as PakkaWood, and form a "D" or slight tear-drop profile with a side ridge that most comfortably fits a right-handed user. Covered by a lifetime warranty, Shun knives are dishwasher-safe, but are best cared for when washed and dried--carefully--by hand. --Ann Bieri

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025Best hardened steel, sharpened to a razor’s edge. Design, look, Size, feel , function all excellent; well worth the money. As always, use a cutting board to preserve sharpness; but can be sharpened with ceramic, or stones.
Cuts anything, meat, fruit, bread, vegetables, cake , pizza, even beef jerky !
Made as a “one knife” for sandwiches, but excels at much more.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2013Of all the products I've purchased on Amazon (and I'm obsessive about buying things here) this is by FAR my favorite purchase.i've been wavering back and forth between the Shun's and the Wusthofs for a while and the price of the Shun was enough to keep me from pulling the trigger. I decided to just take a chance and buy the Sandwich knife as it seemed the most universally applicable of the set. I'm not fully ambidextrous but I do many things with my left hand and others with my right. Having a left handed knife was a dream (and it just so happens my wife is fully left handed so that was convenient). I'll say though that I've tried cutting with both hands and it's not a problem.
The packaging is nice, light cardboard but an item I can't really describe other than a placement holder. Since I just bought one knife this time, I received just one box.
The knife is light but in no way feels cheap. I started just trying it out, slicing tomatoes and a few other vegetables. It's not worth posting pictures but the thinness I was able to slice these things to was just shocking. It took virtually no pressure, you just place the blade on the item and move it back and forth.
I moved on to trying to cut some beef for stir fry. Again, just like the vegetables it was extremely easy and you could cut things with a precision I haven't experienced before. Then I moved on to sandwiches, first just using a standard two slices of bread sandwich and then a Sub.
It was pricey, but I'm sold and as a verified purchase, you'll see several more in the near future if you doubt my sincerity - I have to get them all. They're definitely an investment and you need to be careful with them, you could really hurt yourself if you weren't careful but that's the case with any knife.. If there was 10 stars, I'd give it to the Shun. With that said, I haven't tried a Wusthof yet and even though I'm in love with the Shun, I think I'm going to buy one just for good measure. I'll post a review of it when I do and update this one although I have a feeling I'm already too in love with this product to really want to change.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2009This is my third Shun knife and I've been using it for about 5 months now. Like the Shun Classic 3-1/2-Inch Paring Knife and the Shun Classic 7-Inch Santoku Knife it's extremely sharp and a beautiful knife to look at with it's round tip and Damascus-look ripples on blade. It comes in a lovely box like the one in my video review for the paring knife, that would make an impressive gift.
After 5 months it's still very sharp without any sharpening and I use it a lot. This is a great knife for cutting everything from tomatoes and other vegetables to smaller size loaves of bread. It's my "sandwich making knife". The rounded tip makes it easy to reach into a jar of mayo, mustard or jam and the nice wide blade is perfect for spreading things on bread. It's also great for spreading pizza sauce or making wraps and then cutting them into sections. If you like to make sushi rolls it's great for spreading the sticky rice and for cutting them after you've rolled them up. (Rinse off the rice, of course) It makes a nice clean cut without mashing the roll or disturbing the contents.
Is this a "must have" knife? No, I could get by with my other Shun knives but it a very handy one and it sure gets a lot of use around here.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2014If you do a lot of deli work this is the baby for you. It cuts sandwich crusts (fresh or toasted) without putting excess pressure on the knife therefore you do not end up squeezing the life out of the gasping, oozing club sandwich. It is not cheap but it is totally unique in design and constructed with 'A' grade materials and skills. It will also last a lifetime if treated with care. It is a corrugated cutting edge on one side of a spreading spatula to handle the butter, cream cheese etc. Also useful for garnishing spreading red current jelly or pate on croutes etc. If you are doubting that you will have a use for this knife because you are not involved in making a ton of sandwiches then think again it is so versatile you will not have to think very hard to become a big fan quickly. Shun are coming up with some very useful one off designs and the DM0741 Utillity Knife is another top effort.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2013This is a great knife for cutting through crusty breads and making subs with. It is also good for slicing tomatoes and feels very comfortable in my hand. Bagels do not stand a chance against this knife. Be sure to only hand wash this knife, dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft towel and store in a block or on a magnetic bar. This knife is also super sharp so be sure to take that into consideration if you are new to Japanese knives. There are some videos on YouTube of Alton Brown demonstrating his Shun knives, and they are definitely worth a look.
While this knife may not be an absolute necessity for the home cook, it is a great addition to anyone's quality knife collection. I think it would make a great gift to a Shun enthusiast who is missing it in their collection. If you throw a lot of parties and like to serve homemade subs to your guests, this knife will make preparation much easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuts anything like butter
Used this to cut bread, vegetables, and fruit. OMG, this knife is amazing. I cut a mango and gave the two cut faces of the mango to my wife. She actually said that the edge of the mango was so sharp, that it cut her mouth. i.e., the knife sliced it so well the the skin of the mango was actually sharp too. Great for garlic bread when using French baguettes. Cutting an orange in half is so effortless. I have owned other Shun knives for over a decade, and they still cute as if I just bought them.

Brilliant knife, it's strange looking but I use it more than any other knife in the kitchen. Great for soft fruits, sandwiches and general prep. Razor sharp

5.0 out of 5 stars Insanely useful.
Originally thought this was gimmicky but decided to give it a try. Have found this to be extremely versatile and a go to for most small jobs. Very comfortable to use and ridiculously sharp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it
Great all around knife, I use it for almost anything. After two years, half the teeth are lightly chipped. It's still extremely sharp, which is a good thing as I don't know how I would sharpen it. It's expensive but it's worth it.
