I couldn't believe how poorly made this pencil sharpener was. Batteries rattled around on the inside, the little plastic thing that you pry off to put the batteries in the sharpener fit poorly, and the shaving tray was crooked and needed to be held shut. It actually didn't even sharpen one pencil because the batteries were nowhere close to the contacts (and it wasn't the battery configuration either; I tried every possibility)

Well it's small it sharpens nicely and seems to be easy on the batteries. I've got two, one is over 5 years old and is still sharpening and the one I just bought here. Both have been flawless in all ways.

Awful. Description reads 2 AA batteries. This one needs 4. That would be fine if it actually worked. Placed and replaced 4 brand new batteries. A dud! Didn't work at all. This is being returned ASAP. Gave it one star because it actually arrived.

    love these.

After reading the reviews I ordered two, hoping that one of them would work. As expected, actually one of them worked, the other one was completely dead. Unfortunately there are virtually no alternatives for 9mm pencils that work with batteries. (If you know of any, please comment).

The good thing with this sharpener is that the blade and the motor are basically fine and the construction is so simple that most issues are easy to spot and fix: If you unscrew the screw in the battery compartment you can take off the top part to look inside. It needs a bit of force because there are two latches in the front. Take care not to lose the little black plastic switch next to the sharpener hole. Don't bother trying to take off the bottom part. You don't need to.
In my case, one of the contacts in the battery compartment was not soldered properly, so I fixed the solder joint and it worked. Also, the security mechanism that keeps the blade from moving when the front cover is not attached, is extremely flimsy. If you have no children or other people in your household who may try to touch the rotating blade, I recommend getting rid of that mechanism and simply soldering the two metal pieces near the front of the device together. If you do not solder, duct tape will work just fine. While you are at it, check if the two metal pieces next to the sharpener hole touch properly when you insert a pencil. If not, adjust and secure with duct tape. ^^
Now you can put it back together. Make sure that the little black plastic switch is in place before you close the top. I haven't run into any more problems for a coup;e of months since fixing it so I hope it will work for you, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars VRAIMENT BIEN, mais...
Reviewed in France on November 9, 2015

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware! Works perfectly for the first few pencils. Then it dies!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 11, 2014
I was really looking forward to having this pencil sharpener and was impressed when I first used it. The unit does tell you which way to put the batteries in with the little + and – signs, so no problems there. When I first unboxed and used the device it gave the pencil such a lovely sharp point. However, after sharpening a few more pencils it suddenly would no longer work. I emptied the shavings and cleaned the unit. I even changed the batteries but nothing would bring the sharpener back to life. For the Derwent brand I am extremely disappointed as this is such poor quality. Unfortunately I have had to return the sharpener and will have to find another one.
