Editorial Reviews

They are among the classics on this definitive, 16-song-single-disc survey of their landmark tracks, which was compiled with input from Mayfield himself (the collection originally came out in '97, Mayfield passed in '99). Other highlights include their seminal '61 single "Gypsy Woman," "Amen," the #1 hits "It's All Right," and "Finally Got Myself Together (I'm A Changed Man)" and much more

I've bought every Impressions albums between 1963 and 1977. This CD has the best of the Mayfield/Pate productions. Curtis, Fred and Sam showed how to sing Soul music (Gospel background) with any their peers. This CD also shows what the "Chicago Sound" was like at its peak. Its refreshing to hear great albums selections outside of the Jobete catalogue (Motown). As a songwriter, Mayfield makes you think, as well as write some of the most romantic or danceable songs from anyone. If I was to make my own CD or tape (ol' skool), I would have nearly the very same selections on this CD. The Impressions are among the very best - of all times.

The best thing about Amazon is that you can come across or remember a song or a movie, and immediately go on Amazon and buy it and a very good price. Just like that!
So it was with the "Best of the Impressions."
My Brother and Father and I were talking about the best of the 60's and 70's R&B groups, especially those that dealt with relevant social issues in those turgid times.
Those conversations must begin and end with the Impressions.
Unlike many older nostalgia groups, this CD made it clear that the Impressions sound just as vibrant, and even more refined and relevant as they did in the days of my youth.
A bonus was realizing that a big part of the group in their earlier days was the incomparable Jerry Butler, a powerhouse singer who sang love songs with a man's sensitivity.
I immediately loaded it into Windows media in my computer at work and play it frequently.
Just the tonic for the dissonance of today's music and declining quality of life!!

So you wanna know where soul music came from besides James Brown and a short list of others, this is a great place to start. Not exactly, the greatest collection but, you have Jerry Butler, and Curtis Mayfield, heading the musical direction. There are some great songs for singers to learn here. I cut my singing chops here and was glad I did. Again I am not going to tell you which cuts are the best, I'll let your earholes do that for you.

    Update:
There are very few individuals in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as talented as Curtis Mayfield. His group, The Impressions was just the beginning of his genius. Their melodies, lyrics and soulfulness were Second to None.
The 'Very Best' CD is sonically superior. Though a few songs were unrecognizable, the familiar ones were unforgettable. RIP

This CD brings back memories when there was real talent out there and when Soul music was a category and everyone had their own particular sound, there were lyrics that actually made since and everything wasn't about sex, but it was about love instead. I love this group and this CD every song on it is a winner, one of my favorites is "Fool for You". I love this CD and highly recommend it to anyone who is a lover of real "Soul" music with a message!

4.0 out of 5 stars Forte impression
Reviewed in France on October 30, 2017

This wonderful collection of songs takes me back, and is as good today as it was in yesteryear.
This Very Best CD features songs from between 1969 and 1975, with most having been recorded in the '60's. Most of the '60's songs were written by the late, great Curtis Mayfield.
The recording quality is rich and deep, and makes for a very good listening experience.
Examples of some of the songs on this CD are: It's All Right, with it's cool, feel good vibe, Gypsy Woman with it's haunting sound, and the socially-aware, powerfully beautiful, and moving, Choice of Colors and People Get Ready. Those are just four of the sixteen songs on this CD, which I am very glad that I ordered for my music collection.

    Primal Scream
[Give Out But Don't Give Up]レコーディング直後のインタビュー合間に、

    そしてやはり[People Get Ready]・・・。
