If you are anything like me, this is probably a time consuming process ...
First of all, let me just say that I have only had this mattress for about a week. I will continue to update this review as time goes on, but for now these are my preliminary thoughts. I am going to include the background of how and why I decided on this mattress because I think there may be some information that is helpful to you in your own journey. Feel free to scroll through to the actual product review if you don't want to read all of that nonsense. A little background: The mattress I had was a full sized very plush pillowtop mattress that was probably 15 years old. It had started to droop in the middle a few years ago but I just dealt with it. As a result, I developed a lot of neck and back problems. With that in mind, as well as my budget, I set off to find a replacement. I haven't bought a mattress in quite some time so there were a lot of new products on the market that I needed to consider; Memoryfoam, hybrid mattresses, Eurotop, pillowtop, etc. If you are anything like me, this is probably a time consuming process and ordering online is always a roll of the dice. I started with Amazon since it is the easiest way to explore options and read reviews. I thought I MIGHT want a memory foam mattress because I wanted something firmer yet still comfortable. I checked out some product reviews then proceeded over to Youtube to get a more visual perspective with some additional feedback on the actual products I was considering. After that, I visited sleeplikethedead.com which is an extremely handy website. Not only do they offer comparisons of mattress types, but they also give you data tables showing where the most satisfied range of consumers are among mattress types, brands, and cost categories. I was surprised to find that the most satisfied customers were actually on mattresses that were in the 500 dollar price range and with brands such as Sleep Master. After all of that, and with an idea in mind, I set out into my local community to test-drive some mattresses. So if you are apprehensive about a cheaper mattress, check out that site. I am 5'6 about 140 pounds and I am typically a side and back sleeper (stomach sleeper when I am restless). This, of course, made my quest that much more daunting. I started out with liking the idea of memoryfoam but once I started laying on the memoryfoam mattresses I found that it was nearly impossible to roll over or change positions. They provide excellent support for back sleepers and are very comfy, but if I can't move around I get a little antsy. So that was a no-go for me. Next up was the hybrid mattresses (like this one). I found that I really liked the eurotop mattresses because of the fact that they are just enough cushion at the top with ample amount of support. Unfortunately, all that my local dealers had were high-end fancy mattresses and my budget was simply not anywhere near that ballpark... especially after what I read on SLTD.com. I don't know how much credibility there is to this assumption, but I got the feeling that a thinner mattress might break down faster, and not offer as much support. BUT that is just the impression that I got. Others are welcome to comment and offer their feedback but I decided I wanted at least a 12 inch mattress... especially if it was going to have coils. So I returned home where I exhaustively (and maybe a little obsessively) scoured Amazon for different mattresses that met my criteria. I saw this mattress and decided to go for it. It received favorable reviews here and on several other sites so for the price mark I decided it would be a good introduction to this type of mattress. So far, I think this is the type of mattress for me. That said, lets move on to the review. The Mattress: Many of these hybrid mattresses are classified as medium-firm, which makes sense when you think about how they are constructed: firm springs on the bottom, with soft memoryfoam on the top. A happy medium for those who want pressure point support but also don't want to be sucked into quicksand. After my first week of using this mattress I will say that this particular mattress is firm. I have noticed that it has started to break in a little so I am wondering if maybe that just isn't how it is with new foam mattresses. It has also been very cold here and I know that foam tends to be firmer when it is cold. I have read several other reviews that say the same thing. For me, personally this mattress is still comfortable. I have sciatica and being able to lay flat and still feel like my pressure points are relieved is a big deal. I should also add that my hips are often the biggest hindrance to side sleeping comfortable as they are a bit wider than the rest of my body. I also have broad shoulders. Either way, I sleep very well on this mattress and most of the time I can sleep for hours on my side without any discomfort at all. I don't have any more neck pain or stiffness and my sciatica has dramatically improved. I will warn you though, this mattress is firm the first few nights and while I was comfortable, my boyfriend commented jokingly that it was like sleeping on 2x4s. He prefers a much softer mattress though, so that is probably a matter of individual perspective. It would easily be resolved with as little as a 1 or 2 inch mattress topper, if you find it to be particularly unbearable. This mattress arrived coiled up. The instructions indicated that you could cut the tape straps and unroll it onto the surface before cutting the wrap to allow it to inflate. Let me warn you now: THIS MATTRESS WILL BEGIN TO EXPAND AS SOON AS YOU BEGIN TO UNROLL IT. I learned this the hard way because I had to lift this thing onto a 2 foot platform bed and I had to do so quickly as it unexpectedly began to expand in the very small space of my room. It was, however, hilarious in an I Love Lucy sort of way. It is, however, much lighter and easier to manage if you can uncoil it first. There is Off-gassing, but I slept on mine the first night and while I could definitely smell the mattress, I slept through it. Of course, I had also just built a platform bed for it, so my room was delightfully fragrant in the smells of wood stain and mattress-gas. :) It is possible that the reason I slept so well was because I was slightly intoxicated by the fumes. If you are sensitive to smells, this will probably bother you. Another reviewer mentioned that she stuck dryer sheets between the mattress topper and the mattress. This would actually probably work very well to overpower the aroma. That said: I am giving this 4 stars mostly because I don't know YET how firm it will actually be. It is not super firm, but I would definitely initially classify this as a firm mattress. The quality of the mattress is quite nice, and I do expect that it will last for at LEAST 5 years if not longer. Which I think is long enough for a 300 dollar mattress. This is also definitely a Queen sized mattress and within an hour it had fully expanded to 12 inches. I am satisfied with this purchase. Also: It did take a little while for my mattress to arrive. Amazon projected that it would arrive on a Thursday, but it didn't actually arrive until Monday. So beware of that. Otherwise, good luck to you all in your mattress quest.

I originally ordered the 13 inch king size. Funny story...as I tracked it through amazon and UPS, the delivery date continued to change. At first it was due to be delivered on Wednesday, then it said it would be delivered the day before. Then, It didn't get delivered on Wednesday so I checked it again. The update said that the driver needed more information for delivery location. Well, I called. I gave them directions(which was weird because I have had the same delivery lady for years). Then I get a call from the local UPS facility manager that says she has personally relayed the information to the driver. Then about 15 minutes later she called back and said when she went to check the package herself, she found it opened, inflated and with footprints on it on the floor amongst the other packages in their warehouse. She said I guess you don't want it like that. I replied that I didn't. To conclude this part of the review, UPS covered it as a damage and I had to order another one. Amazon was out of 13" mattresses so I ordered the 12". It came in about a week. I'll start by saying I like the mattress after sleeping on it for a week. It unpacked exactly like the instructions said. I let air out and expand for 24 hrs. It will spring out so be careful cutting the tape. We put it on the bed and slept on it the second night. This mattress is very firm but you cannot feel springs or anything. The foam that tops the springs is also very firm but does give a little bit. My wife and I have been sleeping on a very soft memory foam mattress for about 3 years. We started having back and neck problems due to the mattress sinking and caving in after about 6-8 months. I weigh 175 lbs. My wife could not sleep any longer than 6-7 hours or she would wake up with a crick in her neck which would trigger a migraine headache. Now she can sleep in on the weekends and wake up fine. She did complain about a little lower back pain this morning after sleeping on it about a week but...we slept in.

All that being said, I think that if you like a firm, well made mattress for a lot less money than you can get one in a store, this would be ok to buy. To me, on a scale of 1-10 in firmness, with 1 being marshmallows and plywood being 10, I would rate this at a 6 or 7...but plywood is pretty hard...it is very firm. The only other thing I want to mention that would be helpful is temperature. I used to have to kick off my covers after about 3 hours on my memory foam mattress even with the thermostat set at 68. This mattress does not engulf you so I do not get hot at all during the night but I think I am going to get a 2-4 inch memory foam topper just to soften it up a very small bit, which I may not have needed if I had been able to get the 13 inch that I originally ordered. That will probably warm it up a bit but I think the sacrifice will be worth it. I may just get a thinner blanket as well if necessary. I hope this review helps anyone considering buying one of these. I would recommend this mattress to anyone who either likes firm mattresses or doesn't have the money to get one at a furniture store, or both. It is well made and worth the money considering if it's too firm you can add a topper and at initial quality inspection, it appears to be very well made and looks like it will last for several years. This is my honest review and I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is just a smidgen too firm for me. Like I said, it appears very well made. There is no initial super comfortable feeling right when you lay on it but that marshmallow/cloud/lack of support feeling is what usually causes me pain after sleeping on it for 7-8 hours so I am reviewing keeping the whole night sleep in mind. I guess until we can put on a breathing apparatus and submerge in a pool of body temp water for our night's sleep, humans will have to find a happy medium.

Update - After a few more days of sleeping in this mattress, my wife and I are noticing the foam euro box top is getting more soft. Perhaps it needed a little while to recover from the packaging compression. I am no longer thinking about getting a topper. I want to see where the mattress settles in its firmness range but as of right now I am no longer rating this as a 4 star due to the mattress decompressing. I'm upgrading it to a 5 star. I think this mattress will wind up exactly as advertised...medium to firm...which is where it almost is now. It has been very comfortable so far and I think it will fulfill exactly what I expected. I'll update as necessary if I can remember to.

A year and a half into this mattress and it is holding up! Of course, it doesn't hurt to rotate it sometimes (because you cant "flip" this mattress). I can call this broken in, still getting great sleep.

I paired this mattress up with a nice sturdy frame. Sleep Master SmartBase Mattress Foundation/Platform Bed Frame/Box Spring Replacement/Quiet Noise-Free/Maximum Under-bed Storage, Queen

It was time for a better rest. I had a decade old mattress. It was done. I just had no comfort sleeping anymore. So I took a bit to look around and searched for this mattress. It had solid reviews. It was a good value. I decided to treat myself for christmas. In time I will update this review down the road.

    First reactions to mattress.

It is pretty tall. As advertised. It is a bit stiff, but its not a board. It needs a breaking in period. Everyone should know that by now.

There is a concern about the smell of "mattress gas" from other reviews on here. From unpacking this, I had already took steps to vacuum and put some scented powder on the carpet to prepare for this overpowering "gas." Except, I really didn't smell much. The mattress was packed pretty well with some silicon packs like you would find in a new pack of shoes. I didn't detect any stink or stench. But I had taken precautions and scented up the room. So experience may vary. I got it pretty quick thanks to Prime.

The last piece I want to touch base with is the packaging. This mattress is rolled up and sort of pressure sealed for best shipping. Some reviews made this sound like I was going to cut the ropes and the packaging and this bed was going to blow up like a life raft in my face. It wasn't the case at all! Just use common sense and CAUTION. Beware of using sharp objects to open it. I used a pair of scissors very gently to cut away the bag enclosing the mattress and the tape binding it together. Then once that happens, you fold out the mattress and it has a shrink wrap to it. Cut the shrink wrap open, remove, and the bed inflates gently up into its full size.

***UPDATED**** So as some months have settled in the bed is still as comfortable as the day I got it. It still maintains its firmness, but it is broken in for me. I get better night sleeps. My back doesn't hurt like the old mattress I replaced with this. Yeah, I got my money's worth.

We bought this mattress in 2016 for our motorhome and it's still going strong. My husband and I both think it's the most comfortable mattress we've ever slept on. So, we just bought one for home and another for my (90-year old) father-in-law. Great product and great price.

I usually get really expensive mattresses because I think that they will be more comfortable and durable. After having had a bad experience with an expensive mattress that only lasted a bit over a year, I thought I'd try my luck in this lower price bracket. So far I am pleasantly surprised by this mattress's comfort. It is nice and firm as described. I will say that the outside finish of this mattress seems a bit low end but, given it's price, that was to be expected. It will be interesting to see how long it will remain comfortable...so far so good, fingers crossed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Great for a spare bed but not for regular use
Reviewed in Canada on December 31, 2020
This is the second Zinus 12" Ultima Comfort Mattress that I have owned. The first one lasted about 6 years before it was shot. Having said that it was in our rv and was only used on weekends and vacations.
I decided to replace it with the same one thinking 6 years for a good price great. Wrong idea , after a year of being used every night I had to put a foam topper on it. That has helped but even that doesn't help now. It is shot no support at all huge sags in it .
It has a warranty for defects but you can't really see the sags because the cover stays fairly flat with a big void under it.
I will say when it was new it was extremely comfortable but only for temporary use.
I have not contacted the company but have read reviews where it was a waste of time. After the holidays I may do so and see what happens. I will repost an update if the results are positive.
Well after several emails and about 2 weeks they refunded most of my money. Its a pro rated warranty so I got 90% of the original purchase price back as they had no replacement in stock. I am pleased with the outcome but still wish the mattress had stood up because it was perfect for me.

Great for a spare bed but not for regular use
