- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2005The genius and breathtaking artistry of Rien Poortvliet are beautifully displayed on every page of this wonderful book. Strong faith and great love for the subject matter are apparent from start to finish. As a believer, I can only describe it as a striking affirmation of the Genesis story, and the author's obvious familiarity with animals brings the account to life in ways that never occurred to me before. What a heartfelt portrait of Noah and his family and their experiences with all those extraordinary animals as they rode out the flood together! This can really be considered as a supplement to the Bible story, because it neither takes away from the content revealed in scripture nor presumes to add any superlative events not supported or implied by the text. Delightfully, it adds a dimension of intimate realism to the whole of the flood account and a sense of reverent awe to the depth of the beauty inherent in God's creatures. It reminds us that they as well as we are "fearfully and wonderfully made."

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2016So very beautiful and honoring to God, though it is an intriguing work just on artistic merits to someone of any faith. As a believer it is a work of wonderful reflection on God as loving Creator. Everyone I have showed this to, including myself, has pored over the artwork & exclaimed at the beauty and accuracy. Poortvliet's perspective, and the humorous comments/insights throughout, add so much to his paintings. I think one of his gifts is portraying an animal from ANY angle, in any natural backdrop, with equal ease and precision. I was first introduced to Poortvliet as a child when a friend gave us his "Life of Gnomes" book. These two works have convinced me that I would love any work of his!! Highly recommend this intriguing book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2017If I could only own one of Rien's books I think this would be it. As it is I own most of them:). I have the large hardcover version and its full of numerous quality photos of his artwork. Rabbits, foxes, monkeys, raccoons, lions, elephants... really this one has it all. Animals in their natural habitat doing what they do; hunting, mating, watching, and eating.
There will be no regrets if you buy this one trust me. There has never been a wildlife artist like Rien. How does he actually capture the soul and spirit of an animal? Most wildlife artists are all about photo realism. Not Rien. His animals are full of life, personality and a inter-knowledge deeper than a photo. His notes throughout the book demonstrate how well he really understands the animals he paints.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2016Having seen Rien Poortvliet's book "He Was One of Us" and the amazing sketches and paintings of Jesus' life, I was interested in seeing how he approached the study of animals. Hours of patient waiting and watching in the woods of his homeland gave him sensitivity, insight, and an intimate relationship with his subjects that few artists can match. Sketches offer studies of the animals in various poses and expressions, and paintings born of those sketches celebrate the many facets of life. Poortvliet shows a loving eye for detail and movement, telling stories and revealing personality and emotion captured mid-action with his deft brush strokes.
As a coffee table book, a book for an aspiring artist of any age, or a book for meditation, this book is excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2019This is one of the most gorgeous books I own. I initially purchased it because I am such a fan of Poortvliet's animal drawings and paintings. The amazing landscapes in this book were an unexpected bonus. His use of contrast and color to portray atmosphere is stunning. His animals have great character. Where they appear in a painting, they always belong in the scene, whether as the lead player or in a supporting role. Lastly, the huge size of this book enables me to better experience the artwork within. All animal artists should own this book and study how he achieves his results!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2023Rien's work is incredible, so moving to view.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2021I have loved this book for years. There is a very short and entertaining written portion. The majority of the book is absolutely beautiful sketches and paintings of wildlife. The art is suitable for framing if it weren’t for destroying the book. Enjoyable just to thumb through.

Love the art and the thoughtfulness that went into the author/artist’s ideas regarding the work that went into the Ark. Love the detail and the appreciation the artist has for animals and love and trust in God’s Word.
