- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2020I used this for a Great Gatsby unit. The book was super helpful for identifying major topics to cover within each chapter but some of the techniques felt a little out dated. Definitely a HUGE help for a baseline to go off and then adding your own creative spin to. I believe the lessons within the book were designed for a 70 min. class period, but I found it was easy to modify the things I did like for my 50 min. Class period. Many of the lessons are student-centered and do not rely on the teacher providing a big lecture or presentation. The book also featured a pacing guide and lots of student work samples. Many of the lessons featured some sort of art component which was also nice.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2015I've been teaching The Great Gatsby for 10 years and wanted to find a fresh approach. This book has great suggestions for classroom activities that will enrich the things I already do. Many of the activities could be used for different texts, as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2011As an English teacher, who has never taught The Great Gatsby, my first instinct was to turn to NCTE products as they are generally a reputable source and comes from other teachers.
Overall, I would probably use this guide again, with modifications. It offers a wide range of pre- and post-activities, and usually with multiple activities for one chapter. It is nicely laid out with a summary and objectives of each chapter. I'd say even someone who hasn't read the novel before would be able to teach with this guide.
I have two issues with this guide: First, some of the information is a little out-dated. The author suggests watching Affluenza after finishing the novel. I realized, after watching it, that it's old. Like homemade-90s-old. The second issue I have is that it can be a bit redundant. My students got sick of the charts quickly. He sticks to a few of the same activities, mixing it up once in a while. Otherwise, it's a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2019This book has some great ideas! I was working on a unit around this book and it gave some good direction. Some activities seem a little disengaging and dry, but there are definitely some gems in it and material that can very easily be altered to fit your teaching style. The book covers the time period, goes chapter by chapter focusing on the most important plot points and the background necessary to understand their significance from multiple angles. I think it was a good buy and a good reference for the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2010This book is a great place to look for lesson-planning ideas. It contains detailed examples, varied strategies and thoughtful discussion questions throughout. It is, by far, the best resource for teaching the novel that I have come across.
