- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2015Great idea that you can make yourself fairly easily if you're handy and want to bother. I could, but didn't want to bother since it was pretty cheap I thought. Could fit more accurately on a plastic pail but fits well enough. Main thing is that it works and your shop vac will always be ready to use without having to clean out all the sawdust first. Several videos on the net about building one yourself like this or slightly different designs if you're the type to do that. It's a very clever concept like the way "bagless" vacs are made.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2012I purchased this over a year ago in the color black. Overall I'm happy with the item. Smaller jobs where all that is needed is a shop-vac and a 5 Gallon separator just can make the task at hand easy and enjoyable. The only Con was getting std shop-vac hosing or any diameter hose found in a American shop or garage for that matter to connect to the intake and exhaust ports. Unknown/odd sized openings. I had No Choice but to Adapt, Rig and Overcome and Smile!! at a job well done. I see the pictured model is silver now. I hope this new model is plug and play..

A few notes
1. Several other reviews mention their unit not including an elbow for the interior to create a cyclone: mine did come with one.
2. Several reviews mention that the lid does not clip onto the bucket very well. I would say that mine is also like that, but I want to point out that it may not be that big of a deal. It stays on well enough while moving it around, and once you turn your vacuum on, it sucks the lid tight onto the bucket.
3. Lastly, I did have to get some adapters to connect this to my shop vac. I have a Rigid 4-gallon vac, and the hose end is around 1-1/4 inch in diameter. I got a few plumbing fittings and used some pipe already had. Total further investment of around $10-15.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2015There is a caveat to this four star rating so please read until the end. The five stars is for the product itself. It is a great addition to my dust collection system, I have found nothing but fine dust in my collection bag since adding this. It keeps a snug fit on a typical five gallon bucket, but the incoming hose port should have a lip that would allow for a hose clamp. I have had trouble with the hose popping off when I really stretch it.
Here is the caveat, like many reviewers, my initial box came with the lid only. It was missing the elbow piece which is what actually creates the cyclone action. I had to send it back and get another one. This seems like a packaging error, so I did not factor that into my four star review.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2011I was initially skeptical about this product. But after reading mixed reviews about it I decided to give it a try. Afterall what i've got to lose if it's only $18. Well, I was wrong. Not only you throw away 18 bucks, you wind up wasting hours that you could've spent doing actual work.
The idea doesn't seem back at first, dust collect at the bottom of a 5 gal can via the L shaped elbow while your shopvac provides the suction. But only if you can get the can to stand upright. Keep in mind most 2.5" vaccum hoses are stiff. Most 5 gal can will struggle stand on its own as soon as you connect two vac hose to it. And if you can somehow untwist and balance the hoses, as soon as turn on the shop vac, there is a good chance it will tip over. Now the separator works only if dust drops and collects at the bottom. As soon as it tips over, it's game over. All the dust, wood chips that was collected at the bottom rushes into your shopvac instantly, clogging up everything in its path. Now you've got a filter to clean, and in addition, have to spend hours unclog all the hoses and connectors.
You can put bricks at the bottom, but now when you empty your can, it turns into an utter messy pain in the butt. You need to stick your hand through all the saw dust, nails, scraps to pull out the bricks, spraying yourself a faceful of dust before you can empty the can.
So do yourself a favor, go buy something else that works. This gadget will only boost productivity only after you chuck it in trash.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2011Seeing as how I ALMOST dropped over $100 for a dust deputy, I was really skeptical when I saw this. Here is a LID for a 5 gallon bucket that I can use to turn any of my 5 gallon buckets into a staged dust seperator? You need to be good at real world tetris to find the parts to go from the dust ports to the lid of this to the shop vac. 2.5" raw dust hose seems to work good so far. Anyways, it did not come with any instructions so I was kind of unsure how to set it up and which was the inlet and which was the outlet. Plus the elbow I was uncertain of which way it was to go. I took a chance and have the elbow plugged into the dust port side and then the shop vac connects to the side that just goes straight in. I also turned the elbow so that it was facing more towards the side of the bucket. WOW. I sucked up all of the dust already on the floor and it had GOOD suction. I just recently cleaned off the shopvac filter too but when I looked at the bucket, it was about HALF FULL with the SAW DUST! Even better, the SHOP VAC has only a FEW pieces of dust. WOW. This is SO much nicer than having to worry about cleaning out the shop vac very often. LoL. The first review said 95% of the dust was in the collector instead of the shop vac, I dunno what he did wrong cause I would say it is more like 99%. :) I am just happy that it works and is a GOOD CHEAP solution for us NON PRO wood workers...
Just know that you WILL need to get a hose that can be cut (2.5" hose seems to work fine on this thing), 2.5" hose clamps, MAYBE a second 90 elbow for inside the bucket, a shop vac to 2.5" hose fitting, and whatever you want to hook your hose to at the dust port. In my case it is a 2.5" to 4" adapter and then a 4" ABS coupler to connect the dust port to the adapter.
I would buy another one of these if I need it. I will even look for a 10 gallon container that takes the lid of a 5 gallon just to use this on a bigger container or else if I can find a collection bin with a window that would be nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfect, and great space saver!
Works perfect. I used a 19L Home Hardward bucket and cut the lip off it, which then fit perfect. There are no included instructions, however the setup is rather simple: the elbow fitting goes on the inside of the bucket, on the hole closest to the edge of the bucket. Run one hose to the center hole from the shopvac, attach a second hose to the hole closest to the edge to use for suction. 95% of the debris end up in the bucket rather than in the filter, which in turn gives the vaccum consistent suction.
The inlets are made for a full size, 2 1/2 inch shopvac hose, but with a couple plumbers fittings i could use it with my 1 1/4. A small vaccum like this may actually be preferable because you can make up a rolling cart and save lots of space. Great for small shops with limited space.

3.0 out of 5 stars So so entry level separator. Mine broke!
For what you pay, this is a decent entry model dust separator for BIG shavings.
Definitely not as good as a cyclone system.
Expect to have to empty your pail a lot, a bucket does not hold much dust. Once the bucket is 1/2 full you have to empty it or 1/2 the dust goes into your shop vac.
I had to push pretty hard to get this to fit on my bucket. My thumb went right through this thing!! It cut me! To resolve this issue I trimmed down my bucket slightly for a looser fit, and tuct tapped the hole from my thumb.
Half decent for the price, but I would not suggest buying it. Bite the bullet, and spend $250 on a proper cyclone separation system.... you only have to buy it once!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect fit and suction using Home Depot bucket
I only tried using a Home Depot 5gal bucket with my shop vac. Works perfect. I am a weekend warrior, use it maybe 1-2 times a month for cleaning up wood cuttings or small stones out of the car.
Like
-It works, very well to separate
-Perfect fit for a 5 gal Home Depot bucket
-Easy to clip on and off
-Durable, I feel it’ll last a lifetime for my use
Dislike
-I wish it came with an adapter to connect the shopvac to it. Had to pick up another piece to get it working. But it didn’t advertise it came with it, so not a big deal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just does not work!
I have no idea where these good reviews are coming from. This is simply useless.
I have had this for 2 years. I stopped using it a few months ago when I found I was cleaning my filters with this one just as often as my other vacuum with no cyclone attached.
I did not realize how poorly it worked until I bought a new Dust Deputy. I did a test on both to see how they compared.
I hooked each to my drum sander and sanded the exact 2 pieces in exactly the same way. Then I checked the filters to see how they compared. The filter in the left is from the Dust deputy cyclone and the one on the right is from the Big Horn. I would not waste my money on this. I gave it 1 star because that is as low as it goes.
