While not as out-of-left-field revelatory and astonishing as their exalted debut, nor as darkly magnetic as their sophomore follow-up, Volume 3: Further in Time finds Afro Celt Sound System fleshed out, funky, and fiercely fresh. Now a band of 20-some-odd players, the Afro Celts push forward with unbounded energy and focus, organically driven beats, and a thoroughly joyous fusion of West African and Irish traditional music enhanced with dissonant Eastern influence, psychedelic trip-hop groove, and a monster flood of sonic waves. The resultant sound is somehow both cutting-edge futuristic and primitive in its visceral virility. Demba Barry steps up with an unexpectedly punchy African hip-hop-styled vocal on "Shadowman," "Lagan" plays out into an orchestral swan dive, and, throughout, Johnny Kalsi and Moussa Sissokho come on like gangbusters with the drums. Real World label honcho and world-music champion Peter Gabriel does a stunning turn on the eminently catchy "When You're Falling," and Robert Plant contributes a powerfully epic rock vocal on "Life Begins Again." Fine as all these moments are, the centerpiece of volume 3, where the band achieves beyond perfect synthesis, is the ecstatic groove-lock on the African acid ceilidh of "Colossus." Volume 3 is the tune-in turn-on we've been waiting for. --Paige La Grone

- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2012Afro Celt Sound System is known for blending electronica with elements of African and Celtic music, almost always to very good effect. The group's third album, "Further in Time," is probably the best-known of their albums, in part because of the presence of guest stars Peter Gabriel and Robert Plant. Peter Gabriel's plaintive vocal style is a perfect match for the group in "When You're Falling," an energetic and upbeat song that received lots of airplay when this album was released back in 2001. Similarly, Robert Plant's delivery on "Life Begins Again" complements well ACSS's style and sensibilities; the song unfolds slowly and powerfully, with evocative vocals, strings, synthesizer, and uillean pipes, and would have fit right in after "In the Mood" or "The Way I Feel" on one of Plant's post-Led Zeppelin albums. Yet the other songs, not as well known because the guest rock stars are not present, are also very fine. "North" and "North 2" are ambient, very WOMAD in style, with an invigorating mix of vocal and synthesizer; the song starts slowly and then speeds up. Electronica is sometimes criticized as "ear candy," but the work of ACSS goes way beyond that. "Colossus" is fast-moving, with interlocking melodies; the uillean pipes are used here to good effect, as they are on "Shadowman" and "The Silken Whip." "Lagan" is slower, more melancholy, with vocals and more of a symphonic feel. "Go On Through" and "Persistence of Memory" both combine acoustic guitar and syncopated percussion, with synthesizers in a supporting role. Fans of world music and electronica will no doubt enjoy this most famous of ACSS's efforts.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2001I got hooked on ACSS by one of their songs played on La Femme Nikita TV show. This latest release is as exciting, exhilirating and astonishing as their first two CDs. Sunil Kalyan and Pete Lockett are simply killer on tabla and percussion, and, when added to the driving energy of groove masters Kohnny Kalsi and Moussa Sissokho, you will not sit down for the entire album. You just can't.
I am absolutely no fan of hip hop or rap yet both genre are tolerable on "Shadowman" and "Further in Time" respectively. Peter Gabriel does a gritty job on "When you're Falling", and Robert Plant gives an achingly beautiful performance that reminds one anew of his immense vocal elasticity on the eastern tinged "Life Begins Again". I love that man.
Barely represented this time is the exquisite, crystalline voice of Iarla O'Lionaird and the shivvery, chill inducing celtic harp of Myrdhin that made ACSS 1 & 2 so breathtakingly stunning. I miss them on this CD.
Two songs are drop dead gorgeous: "Persistence of Memory" amd "The Silken Whip". "Colossus" and "Lagan" are dance inducing with hypnotic, joyous rhythms. There are countless treats and surprises that fascinate and astonish the listener including delectable tastes of sampled native african and traditional celtic music. Most of all this stunning CD makes one so happy that it is easy to put it at the top of the "gotta play everyday" play list. I know that I do.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2018This is the best produced album in the New Age category that I have ever heard in my life. The vocal performances on offer here are actual highlights of the singers entire careers. Peter Gabriel & Robert Plant included. Pina Collars vocals in Go On Through will make your heart melt. The instrumentals on this album are also their finest. With excellent implementation of electronic music thrown in that mixes perfectly with the World music instrumentation. For a deep mesmerizing experience from Afro Celts, this is their crowning achievement. For a bit more earthly, African vibe, go with SEED. Personally, I feel these two albums showcase this band at their artistic peak.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2001Pointed to Afro-Celt Sound System by another reader's review, I became intrigued by the sound clips, particularly Lagan and North - Part I, so I bought the album. I haven't been disappointed! The whole "Further in Time" album is rich and diverse, from the energetic drum and fiddle tracks to the haunting and lyrically beautiful flute and uileann pipes over orchestra tracks, the entire experience is both familiar and totally unexpected, conjuring up wide vistas and expansive landscapes and making the heart swell. From the haunting Lagan and Go On Through to the swelling Colossus (which will tempt you to stand up and dance, if nothing will!), it's a rich treat. Easy, but rich listening that will keep you coming back. Highly recommended. You can hear full tracks from this album on their website ....
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2022I bought this used, rated as very good shape, to me the discs were in excellent condition and the cover looked as if you had taken the shrink wrap off and stuck in a tight cd rack for a month, no scuff marks, bends, or scrapes.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2006I purchased this back when it first came out and I heard the cut with Peter Gabriel, which I dearly love to this very day. God I wish he'd do more like that! Anyway, although I can't say that the rest of the album sends me to the moon like that particular cut, it's defintely very very good! There's a great beat throughout, and the mix of African and Celtic sounds is done compellingly well. Some sound more one way than the other, so you get all these shades of the combo, which is interesting.
Highly recommended unusual but well-done fusion!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2019My favorite AfroCelt offering! My favorite: “Colossus” is the best!
The songs are fabulous to drive to & before you know it you’re going 115 mph so be careful!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2017An unusually interesting band. Combines the afro beat and sounds of celtic music together to form one of the most unique types of music.
I own every CD of theirs. This is one of my favs

5.0 out of 5 stars Es geht weiter ...
