AudioQuest 1.5m Carbon USB A > B High-Definition Audio Cable

Solid 5% Silver Conductors
Solid conductors minimize the harmful effects of both electrical and magnetic strand-to-strand interaction. For digital cables, whose signals are of such high frequency that they travel almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor, increasingly thick layers of silver plating are applied to AudioQuest’s Long-Grain Copper (LGC) conductors to further improve Noise-Dissipation. Placing the superior metal on the outside of the conductor produces the greatest benefit on overall performance—a superbly cost-effective way to maximize a digital cable. Carbon-Based 3-Layer Noise-Dissipation
It's easy to accomplish 100% shield coverage. Preventing captured Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System (NDS). Traditional shield systems typically absorb and then drain noise/RF energy to component ground, modulating and distorting the critical "reference" ground plane, which in turn causes a distortion of the signal. NDS's alternating layers of metal and carbon-loaded synthetics "shield the shield," absorbing and reflecting most of this noise/RF energy before it reaches the layer attached to ground. Hard-Cell Foam Insulation
Hard-Cell Foam (HCF) Insulation ensures critical signal-pair geometry. Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy. Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Hard-Cell Foam Insulation is similar to the Foamed-PE used in our more affordable Bridges & Falls cables, and is nitrogen-injected to create air pockets. Because nitrogen (like air) does not absorb energy and therefore does not release any energy from or into the conductor, distortion is reduced. In addition, the stiffness of the material allows the cable's conductors to maintain a stable relationship along the cable's full length, producing a stable impedance character and further minimizing distortion. Direction-Controlled Conductors
All drawn metal strands or conductors have a non-symmetrical, and therefore directional, grain structure. AudioQuest controls the resulting RF impedance variation so that noise is drained away from where it will cause distortion. The correct direction is determined by listening to every batch of metal conductors used in every AudioQuest audio cable. When applicable, arrows are clearly marked on the connectors to ensure superior sound quality. For most models of AQ cable, the arrows not only indicate the direction that optimizes metal-directionality as part of Noise-Dissipation, but also indicates non-symmetrical attachment of shield and GND in order to optimize full-system performance. A fundamental aspect of AudioQuest's multifaceted Noise-Dissipation technology, Direction-Controlled Conductors ensure induced noise is dissipated and drained properly.

  • Solid 5% Silver Conductors: Solid conductors help eliminate strand-interaction distortion and reduce jitter.
  • USB A/B cable: Designed to transport digital audio, Internet and computer data.
  • Signal conductors: Controlled for digital audio direction.
  • Solid 5% silver-plated long-grain copper conductors: Reduce jitter and distortion.

I never really liked the music coming from my computer until i purchased a usb cable from Transparent ( the premium version i think ). So yesterday i ran into a guy extremely knowledgeable in high end audiophile gear and got to talking about our usb cables. I told him about how i love my transparent usb and he told me he that he had the same one and just recently changed to this Audioquest Carbon ( without the dbs battery). He said its the best he has tried under $1000. Dammit !! Now I've got to try it. So today i bought one and bought it home and hooked it up. Right away i heard more detailed highs and deeper bass, BUT i was feeling at first was my lush full range was missing in the mids. Now a couple hours later it sounds very good. As far as the mids now I'm a little unsure. I'm going to give it a few days or weeks to burn in then do some trading back and forth between the two to find out which to keep in my system. In my honest opinion it is definitely worth the money $140 to atleast try out and run it as much as you can for a few days. If you don't like send it back. It might just be transferring x and o but the two i mentioned i can almost promise you will hear a great difference in your system. If not then maybe your system needs some attention in other areas. My system is: pc, class'e cp-800 preamp/Processor (love it), Pass Labs X-250 Amplifier, Nola ko speakers, all Transparent cabling (except AQ Carbon usb now). Edit: "a month later" im my system i never seemed to get my midrange back to i took it out and using (straight wire usb) little cheaper and better over sound in my opinion over the Carbon. Not sure the straitwire is better than my transparent but not bad. February 2024 now. I went back to the transparent long ago. Carbon long gone never to return.

This cable took 2-weeks of continuous music or pink noise to reach its mature sonic profile. Like most other new audio products, it starts out life bright and light with no image depth. Don't give up though. It finally develops a fairly neutral tone character with lots of detail and a wide and deep soundstage. This sounds like an analog cable review doesn't it. Digital cables shouldn't act like this but that's how they roll. It's a good value if you own a very revealing high-end system. Otherwise go for a Pangea cable.

First thing is first. This cable is very expensive with that said, this seller "electronics expo" sold me a USED cable. One end of the cable was just hanging loose inside the package and no paper work was included. Does this affect performance? Of course not, but considering how expensive this cable is, it should have been sold to me for cheaper. On to the review.
I bought this cable to use with my new peachtree M25 computers speakers. I was currently using a $7.00 ANN brand walmart cable. This is a very well built cable, solid construction. And YES this cable made a difference in sound quality as compared to the cheaper cable. Is it night and day difference? Not right off the bat. I listened to an acoustic song before I switched cables and tested / listened carefully wondering if the price was justifiable and you can tell the difference. It sounded warmer, cleaner, open, and a lot less distortion / electrical interference making the music more enjoyable. I am NOT audiophile, but I do have an appreciation for listening to music with good quality as my pocket can afford.
Who is this expensive cable for? It is for the music lover, enthusiast, and of course audiophile. If you just like to hear your music without a second thought than this is not for you, you'll be just fine just connecting to the 3.5mm jack.

This improved the sound dramatically over the generic USB cable I had. I was a complete cable skeptic, especially about USB (digital), but hearing is believing. I had $200 in Christmas gift cards, so I had nothing to lose.

The reason it gets 4 instead of 5:
I'm in the middle of stepping up my amp and cabling to get my sound to the beginnings of realism. As such, I'm auditioning every cable I can get my hands on. From the Oppo 105, the sound was really good over this USB cable. It was night and day. Even my girlfriend sat up and took notice of the additional edge detail and clarity. She continually pointed out things she'd never heard in the music before. However, it was not the lifelike presentation I'd heard in demos using the same equipment, so I wasn't satisfied and kept playing. I used the network feature of the Oppo and it blew the USB and PC combo away. I found my sound quality! Because of this, I'm just no longer looking to play back through my PC for music.

Demo gear: Oppo 105 (Analog stereo out), Integra 80.3, Rotel 1552 (on loan)/Emotiva XPA-5 (looking to upgrade), Nordost Blue Heaven interconnects, Nordost Purple Flair speaker cable, Nordost Blue Heaven power cable, Dynaudio Excite X12s.

Don't be fooled by the snarky comments from people who have never done an A/B USB cable test. It absolutely makes a difference. The cable is STREAMING music in real-time, not transferring packets to be accessed upon completion. Try it and see for yourself.

I used the Audio Quest Carbon cable to connect my computer to my head phone amplifier. I compared several different cables and the Audio Quest carbon was the clear winner in sound quality. The other cables were like looking out a dirty window. The carbon cable was like looking out a window with no glass. It may be one's and zero's but there is also a rise and fall time for each transition and for many different frequencies through the audio spectrum.

If you believe all digital cables sound the same, stop reading now.

For me, the Carbon absolutely improved sound staging and the general "character" of instruments as compared to a generic USB cable.

It falls into the sweet spot of the AudioQuest lineup, giving maximum quality without reaching a painful price point.

      Highly recommended.

I was sent a folded up damaged warehouse cable. These audiophile cables are brittle and are not at all supposed to be overly bent. They will be damaged . My warehouse Carbon USB cable was not shipped in its original Audioquest box that gently bends the cable slightly for shipping. My 1.5 meter cable was folded flat end over end and stuffed into a tiny aftermarket cardboard box. I would never treat my Audioquest cables this way. Very dissapointed. This cable does not sound as good as my other Carbon USB cables....i wonder why?

Update...... after 4 days of testing, then comparing to a "new", not Amazon Warehouse used Audioquest Carbon USB cable I recently purchased, I realize that the cable I was sent by Amazon has been damaged, either by its previous buyer(s) or by Amazon's own shipping and packing process. Audioquest cables are designed to enhance, sometimes dramatically,  your audio.....not make it worse. This cable will be going back to Amazon, and i will be buying a brand new carbon USB cable to use with my system. The next buyer Amazon warehouse sells this cable to will not have a good experience with this cable. I currently have invested  over $2500.00 in Audioquest products. I doubt they appreciate Amazon treating their customers like this.....

Whoever is watching this listing already knows that cables make difference, so let's skip that. Don't look at it as usb cable. It is an upgrade for your system and frankly a substantial. Price is big only if you planning on transfering files, but for what it does to your digital music is good price. For this price there is no better cable (matter of taste).
      Sound:
Specious. If you have a good system it will give you 3D like sound. Good separation between instruments, great soundstage. Tighter, deeper bass. More detail overall.
