It took me years to realize what an important and beautiful album this is. I've always wanted to hear the single an except material from this album more than any other. And even though this is a period collection (more or less) this two disc collection is, in my opinion, better than MOST of the rarities volumes. This is a must have for any diehard fan or for anyone who is into what this band has to offer. But for a first-timer who is not familiar with their early work I would suggest holding off on this one for now, because it just might spoil you. Seriously, I've been a life long Big Country fan and I am literally not waving but drowning myself in this great two disc set.

Anything by Big Country I buy. They are one of my favorite bands and have been since I first heard them. They sound great live and Stuart Adamson was a genius.

Being a Big Country fan, to me they could do (almost) no wrong. Peace in Our Time was a divergence from what I perceived was the TRUE Big Country sound. This album is not bad, especially if you are a fan, but I'd say it's not the best album to play to introduce others to the band. The audio production and mixing could have been better, and a few of the songs fall a little short. However the highlights of this album still carry the sound and promise of this band. It's just not as much of the harder rocking Big Country we grew used to. If you are looking for that, I recommend The Buffalo Skinners.

I probably have worn out the vinyl grooves to this fourth Big Country album I bought way back in 1989 I think.
Some people might not like this album simply because it deviates from the bagpipe-heavy sound of other great BC albums like The Crossing, Steeltown and The Seer.
But groups do mature and try something new for a change. This album is it! Except for the first track, all songs are great like "Broken Heart (13 Valleys)", "From Here To Eternity", I Could Be happy Here", "In This Place" and most specially "Eveything I Need". Hearing this song sends chills down my spine with its haunting melody.
Listening to these songs gives me visions of landscapes from different places around the world. Be it the Scottish highlands or visons of peacefully lying on the beach and staring at the sea.
No anthemic rock choruses for this album, which is a refreshing change. This album do have some of the bagpipe sound but only sparingly and that is a welcome change from the previous albums.
Stuart's lyrics and message is as optimistic and positive as the previous albums. Maybe he should have ended Big Country with this one than fade away in the 90's. This should be BC's swan song.
I don't care much about the 4 extra tracks on this CD re-issue. They are not in league with the mood and theme of the album. Just listen to the original album.
Here are my favorite BC albums and my ratings from 1 to 5:
    1. The Seer - 5
    2. Peace In Our Time - 5
    3. Steeltown - 4
    4. The Crossing - 4.
Buy this album before Linkin Park, Korn and Limp Bizkit take control of the major labels and delete this item in press! :-)
Don't just take my word for it. If in doubt, try to listen to this album before buying at your local CD shop. Enjoy!

Uno dei gruppi usciti negli anni '80 che avrebbero meritato una sorte migliore. Soprattutto il cantante, il povero Stuart Adamson

5.0 out of 5 stars An under-rated gem

I owned this album from the days it was first released on vinyl, and recently re-acquired it on CD. That it is not available on iTunes is a real shame.

The lead single, "King of Emotion", is possibly the weakest track here. Crunchy power chords and a big backbeat - not really what Big Country is best at, although the chorus is sing-along catchy. The real gems here are the more poignant and textured numbers like "Everything I Need", and "Broken Heart (Thirteen Valleys)". Big Country's signature guitars-as-bagpipes sound is present throughout, distinctive without being intrusive. And the anthemic feel of their first hit "In A Big Country" is here in spades in the title track.

It's unfortunate that history doesn't seem to have treated this record well - when I saw Big Country touring in support of the later album "The Buffalo Skinners", not a single track made it onto the set list, and it seems to be an album either forgotten or denigrated by fans of the better-known albums. For what it's worth, this is a favourite album of mine and in my view it is a very, very strong collection of tunes. Well worth your while if you only know the band's bigger hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent

This has a reputation of being one of Big Country's weakest albums, it was apparently not well recieved back in 1988 when it was released. So I came to this with low expectations.
How pleasantly surprised I was to discover that this was excellent, at least as good as BC's previous three albums.

The highlights of this album in my view are the anthemic rock tracks 'King of Emotion' (the opening track) 'River of Hope' and the catchy 'Time For Leaving'. This also has two beautiful ballads, the atmospheric 'Everything I Need' and the heartfelt and genuinely moving 'In This Place', which in my view should be considered one of Big Country's finest songs.

If the negative publicity has put you off this album, take no notice, this well worth listening to.

This does have a different sound to BC's other albums, but that does not detract from the excellent songs and songwriting.
