This Elenco "Variable Voltage Power Supply Kit" is a decent practical starter kit and is overall good quality. I have been teaching my teen son electronics and have looked for projects to help reenforce the theory with practical applications, so this kit was an easy choice.

The kit has 19 electronic components (transformer, capacitors, resistors, IC regulator, etc), printed circuit board, various connectors (screws, washers, etc), a decent case, power cord, label, solder, and instructions. This is more than just a "Insert Part A in location B1" type kit as it actually teaches what each part of the circuit does and includes both a lesson and quiz to test your knowledge. Another useful section shows the wave forms that should be seen on an oscilloscope at various locations on the circuit board, which is good if you don't have one (we do, but it is not needed to build this kit).

The kit does not have a display, so you will need a multimeter to confirm the output voltage along the adjustable scale. We are adding New 2 Wire Blue DC 4.5-30V LED Panel digital display Voltage Meter Voltmeter By Buyincoins so we know at a glance. It also does not have an On/Off power switch, so we are adding SPST Rocker Switch RadioShack 275-0694 (Red). Both of these additions will be easy to put in and will be a good confidence building experience for my son in learning how to modify existing circuits.

Overall, this is a surprisingly good kit that makes a worthy beginner's project.

The power supply when assembled is excellent. Actually looks like a guitar pedal from afar, nice small size. I've built this kit, as well as the Elenco XP-720 kit. The XP-720 is obviously a little more involved, and takes a lot more time to build (but well worth it). This kit took less than an hour to build, even with the problems I had. A manual that I found online for this kit was for an older version, which showed everything soldered point to point with no PCB. My kit, to my surprise, had a PCB (printed circuit board).

The reason for 4/5 stars is because of missing/wrong parts.
First off, one of the binding post nuts had messed up threads. I didn't notice this until I had tried to thread it on. I ended up having to re-thread the plastic binding post and use the applicable nut. Luckily I had one laying around that worked.
Second, one of the capacitors was completely missing. 220uF capacitor didn't come with my kit. So I ended up using a 470uF that I had laying around. If you don't have spare parts laying around, you would have to call Elenco or make a run to radioshack.
The manual mentions a 470uF capacitor, which was no where to be found. Instead, there was 1000uF capacitor in the kit. Not a reason to knock stars off, but it seems like someone was not paying attention when they put the parts in the box. I had no such issues with the XP-720 kit.

I used a blue LED instead of the included red LED, looks cool.

One thing to mention, turning the POT to zero brings the output into the mV range, but it doesn't actually turn the power supply off. You must plug and unplug it. A future modification might be to add a switch, but I don't mind it for now. The case is made of plastic by the way.

I wanted something to build and to power my future projects. This has about 15 - 20 parts that you have to solder. It included the solder, a printed circuit board. It has detailed instructions, and explains the purpose of every component. Took about one hour to build. Everything works fine. The potentiometer has a nice firm feel, and the connectors have a quality feel to them. It seems to supply a steady voltage with no noticeable variance under a load. Using a digital voltmeter, it goes from .5mV up to about 18.5V.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesnt have a power switch. I tried using a surge strip, but when using that, the voltage surges about 2-3 volts before going completely out. It does the same thing when you first turn it on. It's not a problem unless you have a circuit that you want to turn off and on quickly. A switch will probably be a future addition.

Overall it's a great power supply. Well worth the twenty bucks. I enjoyed putting it together as much as I have enjoyed using it.

Everything worked fine for about 5 minutes after I made it. I turned it on again a week later and a capacitor exploded. I replaced the capacitor, thinking it had been faulty, but the new one started smoking after 10 seconds of use. I got an electronics professor to look the circuit over, though the problem persisted after replacing two diodes, two resistors, and the capacitor again so I gave up on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and useful power supply kit.
Reviewed in Canada on May 1, 2017
This is a very nice, simple to build DC power supply, As usual with Elenco, the instructions are easy to follow and very complete. The Assembly Manual has illustrations, check lists, testing instructions and a troubleshooting guide, as well as quiz questions for reviewing the theory learned during the project construction. The circuit board and case are not crowded with closely spaced components, so basic soldering skills and simple hand tools are all that is required for the successful completion of the project.
I made two modifications to the kit. First, I added an on/off toggle switch to the AC input line, so that the power supply can be shut off without pulling the plug out of the wall receptacle. Second, I wired an LED display to give a readout of the Voltage across the positive and negative binding terminals, so that it isn't necessary to have a separate Voltmeter connected externally. (See the attached photo for the placement.)
This was a very pleasant project for me, and I would definitely recommend it, especially for the novice electronics hobbyist.

    Great little kit!

EDIT: With a little solder and 3 binding posts I also added a 17VAC and a 34VAC tap to it to add even more functionality

I like this kit a lot. Very simple to put together and quite accurate. I compared the output to my meter and it's excellent. How did I compare accuracy with a meter? Well on to the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. It needs an on/off switch AND a panel Voltmeter to really be usable. But, this was an easy modification. With about 10 bucks worth of parts and a little careful case carving, I added a switch for on/off and a digital panel meter. Image of the finished product attached. The initial construction took about 20 mins and the mods about another 20 mins. Good little unit with some portability as well. Go for the extra 10 bucks and make it a complete digital machine with just a couple of simple steps. Take your time, solder well and it will outlast you!

Seller was great and arrived quickly. Built it in a day. Very easy kit. Well put together and great instruction book like all the Elenco kits. I have built many of their kits. Great for teaching my nieces when they come to visit only because all I have is neices. They like the toys they make themselve to take home. I got this as a sample for a future project to do with them.
Unfortunately. This particular one has a defect in the PCB. Somehow it's conductive between the traces or The C2 capacitor pins hole is placed way too close to each other. Soon as it goes over 8V it arcs and burns a hole in the board. Also not very exact voltage ratings but within 5-7% of the markings. I don't know if it was this run of boards was bad or this item has always been faulty. I am presently talking to the Elenco manufacturer to find out what the problem is and whether they will send a replacement.
I have been soldering and repairing stuff for a while. I have a microscope an ultrasonic cleaner and a Yuma hot air solder station. I have built way more complicated items and kits. This is not a user error.
