Top reviews from the United States

Edward Elgar perhaps the most important English composer in the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th had a very modest
debute. Born in 1857 in Broadheath small city in the Midland was remarkebly musical talent from his youth . His first musical trials were amazingly during his position as Bandmaster of the Powick asylum ensemble. Powick a reknown lunatic asylum became famous for his advanced therapuetic methods which included treatment in musical band for the amuzement of the patients and the staff. Elgar took his position there very seriously and composed a set of five Quadrilles sets and accompanied five polkas. The music was simple but heartcatching and made the patients a lot of happy hours weekly. After five fertile years Elgar who became more famous left his position and the music was all forgotten.
This CD is the innovation of the english conductor and Elgar researcher Barry Collet who brougt new life for all those obscured works. A special ensemble
was recruited from CBSO players who plays all those works marvelously. A must for everyone who follows the rising success of this important british composer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for Elgar enthusiasts
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 7, 2014
This disc is further testimony to the excellent work of Barry Collett in getting 'forgotten' Elgar repertoire not only performed but recorded. The recording itself is excellent, with the players of the Innovation Ensemble doing full justice to the pieces.

While most of the disc concerns the Powick music, there are some delightful 'extras', including a Duett for double bass and trombone, a Fugue for oboe and violin, and an Andante & Allegro for oboe and string trio - all written by the youthful Elgar for performance by various friends and family. To accompany the recording, there is a high-quality booklet with photographs and excellent notes by Andrew Lyle.

This is not great music and no one is claiming it to be, but it is tuneful, skillfully written and easy to listen to. For the Elgar enthusiast it provides an interesting insight to the composer who, denied the financial resources to study abroad, learned his trade in and around provincial Worcester - 'from the ground up'.

The nature of the Powick music, written for the Patients' Friday Dances, means there is much similarity of tempo - on a disc with (for example) twenty five Quadrilles, this is only to be expected. With this in mind, I suggest the disc is best listened to in sections rather than in one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Elgar fan!!

I don't generally supply product reviews, but for this I am making an exception.

This is an excellently produced purchase, well-performed, with excellent, comprehensive liner notes.

As a piece of musical archaeology, this is highly informative in the evolution of the enigma that was Elgar. To boot, many of these pieces have never been recorded before and give a great insight into Elgarian juvenilia.

So, for the listener who claims to "like" Elgar, this is a must!
Oh, and oboe fans will be quite pleased too....!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Early Elgar
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2014
This CD is a must for all lovers of Elgar. The music is refreshing and very tuneful, containing some previously unrecorded early Elgar pieces. Mr. Collett conducts with warmth and charm conveying is love for this music. The booklet notes are very interesting and provide good background to the pieces. I have the earlier Rutland Sinfonia cassette but this recording far surpasses it. Many thanks for providing us Elgarians with a superb disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elgar - Powick Asylum
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 20, 2014
A fascinating glimpse into the young Elgar, demonstrating a very different style to his later, definitive works. Very tuneful, yet simple, with occasional phrases which suggest Sullivan, Mendelssohn or Brahms as influences on his development. I like the music and feel it has given me a much more rounded perception of Elgar and his background.

A really fascinating compilation of lighter works written very early in Elgar's career. Don't expect anything that foreshadows the Enigma Variations, the Cello Concerto or the Pomp and Circumstance marches; these are mostly catchy light salon works (of the kind which you find in The Wand of Youth) but most enjoyable and well performed too.
