What is a French Press?
A French Press is a coffee maker with a plunger made of fine mesh. The plunger is used to push the coffee grounds to the bottom when the coffee is ready to be poured. This full immersion method of brewing enhances the flavors and oils from the coffee grounds, delivering a unique coffee experience.
What you will need:
In order to brew the perfect cup, you will need hot water just off the boil, coarse ground coffee, and your La Cafetière Press.
A Guide to Perfect Brewing
Step 1
Remove the lid and plunger from your French Press, and add one heaping scoop of ground coffee per normal sized cup. (Scoop is included).
Step 2
Fill the beaker with hot water, leaving a 1 inch space at the top, and gently stir.
Step 3
Keep plunger raised, and replace the lid to prevent steam from escaping. Let it brew for 3-5 minutes in this position.
Step 4
Push plunger down slowly, holding the handle of the press firmly with the other hand.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2015The bad reviews are related to size, but this is the traditional coffee cup size vs a mug. It makes over one mug, so it's good for a mini/personal coffee press. I ordered one a while back, which arrived broken. This new one has been great. I love this brand of press because it's more affordable than the popular Bodum, but has no plastic parts. I have a larger all stainless one. This classic design has a chrome holder so it may rust in dishwasher or oxygen cleaner if it gets on the outside. If you are worried, get the all stainless versions. I use this and a Chemex to avoid plastic. This makes a richer coffee. The Chemex (or any manual drip) is good but lighter, because the paper filter absorbs the oils. I love the press pots for coffee and loose teas.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2010If I wasn't so lazy I would return this thing but that would require a trip to the post office which is always packed in my town despite the fact that, as reported on Seinfeld, no one really needs mail anymore. Anyway, the problem is the advertised "3 cups" size must refer to those little china teacups or maybe 3 teacups used in a child's play tea set. In real life this thing barely fills a single regular size mug. A grown man can hold it with a thumb on the bottom and an index finger on top. I guess it does get a laugh from visitors because it looks like a surrealist replication of a normal size French press. However, the visitors stop laughing when they realize there is no tea or coffee left for them. In short, it's too small to be of practical use.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2011I bought this little press because it has no plastic parts and I am trying to avoid using plastic in my kitchen. I debated whether to get something like this or a percolator. It is small, but will fill a 12 oz. mug with room for cream and sugar. It is also very easy to clean, and it's attractive. I've been using it every day for a few weeks and have been very pleased with it, despite the high price tag. This morning, however, I went to make my morning cuppa and noticed a big crack down the side. I was surprised since the product description claims it's made of tempered glass. I have been very careful to follow the instructions, which say to use hot, not boiling, water, and have always treated it very gingerly. I hate having to give this little press a low review, since I was in love with it up until this morning, and even considering ordering a larger one for company. But considering its short lifespan, I think it was a waste of money and I should have gone with the percolator.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2015This was a gift and the recipient loved it. It's used at the office for tea and she gets lots of compliments on how nice it looks. These aren't packed that carefully and the first one I ordered arrived broken, somehow the next one was intact.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2015glass was broken before even 1 cup was brewed. returned and will buy different item from another company.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2015I love my 3-Cup French Press.
It's wonderful to use at work.
I would recommend this particular french press to anyone.
Thank-you.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2013If you want to make coffee for one and you like your coffee to taste as it should, this is ideal. If you want to make coffee for two or you don't like coffee so much as you are in pursuit of caffeine by the most direct method and in the largest quantities possible, then look for other options. I also have the 8-cup press by the same maker, and it is good for company. But for one, I have found it lacking for two reasons 1.) The coffee gets cold in such a large container when you make, for example, only 3 cups and the glass container is left filled mostly with air, not steaming brew; 2.) For some reason, coffee in a French press tastes best when you make it in the amount for which the press was designed. Twelve ounces in the 8 cup press don't taste as right as twelve ounces in the twelve ounce press. I like this brand because it uses no plastic and the grinds do not become embedded in the press or find their way into the cup, as I have found with other brands' models. Even if I want 24 ounces of coffee (two full American mugs), I find I'm better off making one of these 12 ouncers, drinking it while it's hot and then making a second fresh, hot one. The temperature, natural sweetness of the coffee and strength are then all just right all over again. I am somebody who really likes coffee, and I can't stand the burnt, watery, disdainful effort put forth by your typical coffee maker, both commercial and home models.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2015I did not buy this on Amazon but in a shop for $8 about ten years ago. I'm amazed at the rise in price, but the thing looks the same. For a one-person make-a-cup this is great. I fill it halfway and get the small cup of coffee I want. I'll point out that I put it in the microwave without the top and it works fine. Metal as long as it is looped and not with ends sticking out, is safe in a microwave. No sparks, no hot metal, just hot water. For those who have had trouble with cracks etc by pouring hot water into it, you can just put it in the microwave with water and coffee to heat. Maybe that's not the total connoisseur approach but works great for me.
