- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2016This is a revised review based upon the fact that I was finally able to get the transmitter open -- the "Open" and "Close" arrows enscribed on the body of the device actually tell you which way to rotate the BODY (the long, white part that goes in the water) and not the CAP (the blue part on top). Once I realized this, I was able to get it open and put the batteries in. Now that this has been accomplished, I can say that it has been working perfectly for the past few days. I am now happy with the purchase, and am bemused by the fact that my pool water temperature rises and lowers by 5+ degrees depending on the time of day.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2017This product is great and terrible, let me expalin. The first nine months were great. I was on vacation and my hot tub somehow turned off and froze. I live in MN and so I purchased this product to help me monitor for any future temperature drops. Again it worked amazingly well, the range was better than I expected so I could put the sensor and the display exactly where I wanted.
Then after nine months the battery died. I had four people attempt to open the unit with no success. The fourth person got understandably irritated and used pliers which broke the unit. I emailed ambient to ask for a replacement saying that: "It seems abnormal that it would be sealed so tight that you can't replace the battery." They nicely responded saying that they would not replace the damaged unit and I would have to purchase a new one and mentioning that it was overtightened. The unit has arrows on the bottom showing the direction to open so I can't believe that. It's a total loss of $70 for a product that I was very happy with until the battery died.
I will not be repurchasing but if you do decide to buy this unit plan on buying this kit to replace the battery and possibly buying a new sensor every couple years ($32). F007PF-WRENCH ($20)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2021Works nice. Display can be hard to read in the water at times. Takes a beating in the AZ 115 temperature. Accurate within 1 degree of my other pool thermometer. Would buy again!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2016Love this pool thermometer that floats around the pool but, of course, the best part is I can check from the house to see how warm the water is. it was easy to set up & I have the receiver in a window on the second floor in direct view of the pool...within 30'. I heeded previous reviews & followed the step by step instructions instead of just doing it "my way"
UpDate 2018 - no longer working pool, temp stays at 77 no matter what the temp really is. The base station is still going strong but who cares. Used about 5 months in 2016 & 17 just a few weeks in 18. We tried resetting but it’s a no go. Deciding if I stay with this or try a different one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2018Update. Received a replacement display unit. Same thing happened again. As soon as you have to replace the batteries, the unit is dead. First one, batteries went bad and unit just showed some lines. Replacing batteries didn't work. Trying to reset it didn't work. NOTHING worked.
Replacement unit worked fine until batteries needed to replaced. Again, weird lines on display. Nothing works. Not trying different batteries, not resetting it, nothing at all makes the display come back to life.
Those are just issues with the DISPLAY unit. The actual thermometer unit has issues of its own.
So here is my advice, if you HAVE to have it, start with strong and good batteries. Because when they run out, you can throw the whole thing away.
Find it quite sad that the company is not addressing this issue whatsoever. Just say this is a one season product, or make it work better/longer. Ignoring this issues is not the way to go.
Works great while it works. After just one season. Dead. Way to expensive for a throw away item. Doesn't last. After reading more reviews I see that most don't even make it through one full season. Also don't see the company addressing any of those issues.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2018I bought this in September of 2016 to monitor our hot tub remotely over the winter. Worked fine for the first year. In September of 2017, I put in fresh batteries and put the device in the hot tub. A month later, it stopped working. When I tried to unscrew the top to check on the batteries, the antennae snapped off. So it was fine when it worked, but I was disappointed that it didn't last a few years. Note - I just read on their website that this unit is NOT recommended for use in hot tubs or other situations where there is a cover. The additional moisture will cause the sensor to go bad early. !0 points for being a reputable company! For these situations, they have a different brand they recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2016These units are absolutely fantastic! The transmit unit has an excellent threaded seal with a locking key built in/attached which really gives that extra cinching tightness for keeping the guts dry. As another purchaser mentioned, be sure and read ALL the directions first, starting with the transmitter which needs to be assembled first. Then follow-up with the receiver which is very easy to program. Again, read the instructions first, then follow the directions step by step. I hung the receiver on a wall that receives the transmitter signal through our glass window in the back door which provides a direct line of sight to the pool. The temperature is very accurate. I am so pleased to find a unit that runs on solar (internal batteries provide power if cloudy) as our pool is in the sun all day. I purchased the AmazonBasics AAA Performance Alkaline batteries which are an amazing price for a box of 20. The expiration date is Nov. 2025. Nice to receive everything needed in one package! You may feel this unit is a little pricey, but I assure you, worth every cent for such a quality product.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2019This only worked for 2 seasons. It is too expensive to replace so often. Worked fine when it worked. The LCD screen on the pool side went out and it looks like the seal degraded. The base station still works, but who really needs to know the indoor temperature.
