For anyone relatively new to classical music, you can't go wrong with this collection of
four Liszt Symphonic Poems (actually, three, as Mephisto Waltz isn't technically one, but
might as well be). For the seasoned collector, you either like Liszt and Solti, or you don't.
The sound engineers for these recordings were Decca's Kenneth Wilkinson and James Lock,
    two of the best ever.

Sir Georg Solti rendition of Liszt’s powerful symphonic poem Prometheus is by far the best available. Despite the tinny nature of the recording, which is enhanced greatly when played back with a good equalizer, Solti captured the raw essence of Prometheus being tied to a rocky crag and being attacked by an eagle daily as punishment for giving mankind the gift of fire. Other renditions, including those by Haitink or Masur, pale in comparison.

Liszt’s ground-breaking art form, which conjured up vivid emotional scenes, such as this, or delved deep into the psyche of the character being portrayed, such as with Tasso’s lament and triumph, were pioneering experiments that utilized music as a tool to carve and shape sound in ways that were never thought possible in his day. And when one places this revolutionary music in that 19th century context it becomes all the more spectacular. And Solti’s renditions of each tone poem are beautifully executed. Masur’s Tasso is equally great.

Also featured on this disc are Liszt’s first Mephisto Waltz, which is performed with vigor and verve, and Les Preludes, the popular showpiece, which although other performances are better than this one it still rounds out a superb album. This disc serves as an excellent introduction for anyone unfamiliar with Liszt’s new art form, and is a must-have for any Liszt aficionado. As for the more adventurous, the Ultimate Liszt 5 disc box set, mentioned by Phil, may be the better avenue to take.

The same identical performances that are on this CD are included as disc 4 of the 5 CD budget set (Ultimate Liszt: The Essential Masterpieces). You can purchase that box set and get four other discs of fine Liszt performances for the same or less than what this is presently selling for here.

The performances on this CD are perfectly fine; the box set referenced above is what I purchased myself and it is the better value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Einfach eine sensationelle CD!
