What's it about? A lot, far more than can be put into what is a long film. The result is a beautiful but glancing blow when it comes to French colonial Indochina. The outline of a life and the varied conditions under which it was lived. A clash of culture in a colonized country, exposing some of the complexity, cruelty and abuses, mixed up with idealism. Love/ Hate relationships, personal and political. Just a taste as time passes for the characters from sometime in the 20's, the height of the rubber plantations to the recognition of Vietnam as an independent country in the early 50's.
Think: Out of Africa goes to French Indochina, and double the complications. Linh Dan Pham and Catherine Deneuve play the lead characters. Deneuve's character is elegant and captivating. Her career spans more than 120 films and she was nominated for Best Actress for this part.
If you like big movies, foreign places, love stories, history. It's completely worth the rental. I saw it in 92 and I was just as pleased to watch it again. Watch it in a double feature with 'The Lover' and see two very different views of roughly a same time and place. One a film that goes to a history and struggle of a place, the other to a very personal experience born of that place. My opinion and I could be wrong.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2021It has taken me some time to get used to the French approach to movies. I saw an interview with Catherine Deneuve where she said, "There was a famous French critic who said that the difference between American films and French films [is the] French film explain what we are going to do, and the Americans show you what they are doing." I have found this to be a very helpful reminder and it helped me embrace more of the story of Indochine. I even went back and watched it again and could appreciate the subtle nuances even more. I feel that Deneuve really was overlooked by the American film industry by losing the Oscar for this role, and if she was given the opportunity, could have another great epic left in her. If only we didn't care so much about age. At any rate, Indochine will forever be a classic, beautiful and heartbreaking saga that more than earned its place in cinematic history.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2018An older film (1990s), but a continuing story, a trilogy actually, moving to "The Quiet American", then to the as-yet not filmed "Saigon Bridal Dreams". The consumption of a country's natural resource (rubber & latex plantations of Indochina; now Vietnam), and the personal struggles of those people who, against sometimes great odds, persist to fill their wishes & dreams. Catherine Deneuve is asked in one scene, why persist to run the operation. "I like the smell of rubber", she replies.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024This is such a powerful film. Catherine Deneuve captures her character so completely in the backdrop of a rubber plantation during colonial times in Southeast Asia. The soundtrack is haunting and wraps itself comp, etely around the film itself. the film.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2023We watched this film in my French class which focused on francophone films across cultures. If you want to know about the French colonial period amidst a backdrop of complicated relationships then this is the film to watch. Most of my knowledge of Indochine (Vietnam) came from the Vietnam war era in the U.S.A. This film provided me with the catalyst to learn more about the colonial period in Indochina. The cinematography is gorgeous and I can only imagine what this must look like on a big cinema screen.
