Product Description
Product Description
Billy Elliot meets First Position in Ballet Boys, a documentary that follows, over four years, the struggles, set-backs and accomplishments of three friends and hopeful future dance stars: Lukas, Syvert, and Torgeir. The boys sacrifice a normal high school experience (including parties and dating) for the sake of ambition and a love of dance. Facing pressure from their parents, school teachers and ballet mentors, they prepare for potentially life-altering and career-making auditions at some of Europe's most prestigious ballet schools.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2016This is a very interesting documentary on what is not a very common topic: young men training to be ballet dancers. We have seen some documentaries on this topic but they usually deal with younger students. Here, we encounter three young men in high school on their way to a possible careers in ballet. At this age, there is a bit more seriousness and also some scenes that are perilously close to being romantic! As one boy put it, you would have to be crazy to train in ballet to meet girls but it is a nice benefit! This takes place in Norway, which is a country that is quite serious about ballet, so what goes on is at a pretty high level. One of the main elements here is that Lukas goes to London to audition for the Royal Ballet School and gets accepted. The family discusses the pros and cons and the financial burden(ballet training in the Oslo school system is free whereas the tuition in London is expensive, although a scholarship or sponsorship is possible) but more significantly, there is the emotional burden. Lukas is very unhappy about leaving his family, as well as his friends.
There are some nice bonus scenes, including one where Lukas's friends go to London to visit him in the Royal Ballet School. There is also a scene where Lukas and a female dancer speak outside the Oslo school, waiting for it to open, telling each other how much they love to dance with each other.
This is in Norwegian(with some English, especially when in London) with fixed English subtitles. This is a great addition to ballet documentary discography.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2018Ballet Boys is a mild mannered slice of life salute to boys who have the courage and stamina to do ballet. Three Norwegian friends wrestle with the difficulties, physical and mental, on their way through professional training. It's an encouraging coming of age story and my quick web search reveals at least two of them are today among the ranks of professional troupes. I find it inspiring.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2017There is very little actual dancing in this DVD. Also, the name is very misleading. One would assume that if the title is in English, the soundtrack would also be in English. It never occurred to me to check the language and I was very surprised that it is in Norwegian.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2003This movie assists young boys in imaginative dance techniques. The instuctor does not use technical names for any of the movements but tells them basically to dance and move in story form. It is great for learning the movement but would need real instruction to learn correct names etc.... After each child student segment there is and older dancer showing the correct way to do it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2017Fine Norwegian documentary with English subtitles.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2015There have been many documentaries on young dance students competing for a place in a company but – to my memory – this is the first one that concentrates on the MALE dancer. And, most “ballet” films have the standard score of the classics like Tchaikovsky or Stravinsky. Not this film. Which really drew me in.
When a director – in this case Norwegian director Kenneth Elverbakk – starts filming a real-time documentary, they are never sure where it will lead or end. And he has to hope that the results are worth editing. I will not spoil the film for you (and I hope other reviewers are as kind too) by telling you how it ends. (See note about ending in a minute).
There are three teenage boys who form the Male dance class at the Ballet School in Oslo. They are a small class compared to all the girls who want to be ballerinas. They play today and bond in friendship. One. Asian –Norwegian Syvert talks about how it’s a great way to meet girls! As they progress each has a different vision of what they want to do after secondary school. (This is an after school class).
We see them practicing and it’s more of modern dance (with some neat original pop music) than classic ballet. These are just a bunch of guys who, like the characters Billy Elliott, want to dance.
When the 72 minute film ended I felt unfulfilled. I’m not giving a spoiler here (I hope), but there were loose ends for me. THANKFULLY, the 29 minutes of “bonus shorts” fills in the holes and answered all my questions and gave the film a closure that it was missing. If you saw the film without the bonuses, you are missing a lot. So plan to watch the film and then immediately play all the bonuses.
The film is nearly all in Norwegian and there are English subtitles. As wioth a lot of recent DVDs that I’ve reviewed here, these are in white and at times are difficult to read when there is a light background (I needed to go back and freeze the frame). The easiest subtitles to read are in yellow or bright green but these are plain white.
So, though the film itself would get four stars from me, the added bonuses bring it up to a five.
I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

“Anything Phonographic”
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2016I thought this was a terrific little documentary about three boy ballet students in Norway. There wasn't a lot of depth, and actually I wish it was about two hours longer, but there was a lot of charm. The three boys are very compelling and the dancing lessons are great. I wish the documentary was able to delve into their lives a bit more, but they are very young and I guess privacy concerns didn't allow for that.
It was sort of like seeing the movie Boyhood because you saw the boys mature into men, and go from age 14 to about age 17 or 18. I want to know what happened to all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and beautiful journey for Scandinavian ballet students
Absolutely fantastic movie! Extremely well-constructed, beautiful and MOST INSPIRING survey of the dreams, challenges, joys and pains, of 3 male ballet students in Norway, as they grow from age 14 thru 17. My only reservation is concerning the duration: one wish the producer would have planned for bigger budget, so that the movie would be longer than the 72 minutes duration. Apart from that, it is so well done that we wish the same 3 students would be shown now in their twenties, to see what happened of their career, notably Lukas who was admitted into the Royal Ballet School in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Un reportage qui vaut un film élaboré

5.0 out of 5 stars It gives a good picture of both the training and how dedicated you ...
I enjoye this very much and have passed it on to my grandson who is 10 and has just had his first audition for The Royal Ballet School. It gives a good picture of both the training and how dedicated you have to be to suceed but also is a touching portrait of the 3 boys, their backgrounds and their friendship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted documentary for ballet lovers
Lighthearted look at three engaging teenage boys, still with braces on their teeth, who forge a strong friendship while seeking to excel in the world of ballet, a world very much the preserve of females. More of a documentary than a film, its a worthwhile acquisition for all lovers of ballet.
With full 1080p resolution, image quality is excellent. Lovely glimpses of Oslo.
