Secrets of Scandinavian Cooking Hardcover – July 12, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
We've long looked south for our food inspiration - but what about our neighbours to the north? We share a climate, a history (those Vikings got everywhere) and a love of cool, from sleek Nordic design to clear frosty November mornings. We also share our love of the outdoors - bracing autumn days, bright spring mornings, lazy summers by the water and long winter walks - and the pleasure of sharing good food with friends around the kitchen table.
Discover the secrets of Scandinavian cooking - from delicious healthy breakfasts and leisurely brunches to tasty suppers and plenty of stress-free crowd-pleaser puddings. Learn the knack of putting together the perfect smorrebrod for a speedy Scandi lunch, and discover some very more-ish cakes and biscuits to accompany your afternoon cuppa.
From cinnamon chestnut bread, cardamom cream buns and home-made gravadlax to soups, salads, smoothies and much more, Signe Johansen, a young cook steeped in the traditions of Scandinavia and trained by the best British chefs, shows us that it's not all herrings and meatballs... although you will find them in here too. Fresh, light, surprisingly indulgent, this is food to lift your spirits - it's quite simply Scandilicious!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2013This book is lovely. The photos are beautiful and just looking at the recipes can keep you out of the fast food drive in line. I don't eat fast food. I cook almost everything from scratch and I often need inspiration. These recipes are so simple and delicious, you'll start thinking of your plate differently. The cover stays in my mind and now I need a bag of frozen cherries in the freezer, a few on the plate with meatballs and mashed cauliflower is attractive and delicious -not to mention healthy! This is one of those perfect gifts for someone who sees food as more than a meal.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021I bought the book for one specific recipe and ended up making several others. Gret selection. Accessible instructions. Fantastic final product!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2015All recipes are in European weights and measures - I wish I'd know that before I bought it.
All of the other positive reviewers are right - the recipes are appealing and are well written. The photography is both artistic and practical. You get a good idea how a dish should turn out. I also like that the dishes are organized by the time of the day: Breakfast; Brunch; Lunch; Afternoon Cake (Fika); Dinner; and Dessert.
I will definitely cook a number of recipes from this book, although I'll have to do the conversions before I start.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2013This is a beautiful book, but it is not 'translated" to American terms, so some research and calculation are needed. The two recipes I've made have turned out wonderfully, however, and have that "European" flair about them.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2012I've got well over a 100 cookbooks and this is by far the most beautiful! It's a proof edition and has the most amazing photos . . . with the added bonus that the recipes are delicious!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2013Unusual recipes. Not your basic cookbook. But a good addition to any cookbook collection. Now I don't have to borrow it from the library anymore.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2013I haven't used any of the recipes in this book yet, but I definitely will try some soon. There are so many tempting ideas.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2014The book is cute, fun to look at, and full of recipes that look, sound, and taste great!
The book itself had slight damage when I received it, but nothing I couldn't live with.
I'm looking forward to trying out ALL the recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A family favorite
Prefer the sweet recipes to the savory, but a very good cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh so yummy....
beautiful recipes, I can't wait to try out the bread recipes. I have long been a fan of scandinavian food and flavours. I have so far had a few of the open sandwich suggestions (the goat cheese, radish and rosehip was amazing!), and have also made the potato and egg salad and the cottage cheese with beetroot. Everything tastes really fresh and balanced, and most of it is very healthy as well. If your only experience of scandi food is Ikea's meatballs and Daim cake, you should buy this book if only for the daim bar cake recipe in here, as well as to try some much yummier scandinavian food! A lot of the recipes in here are actually fairly quick to knock up as well, and there are lots of really lovely breakfast and brunch ideas as well. This book is going to be one of those that is hardly ever on the shelf in my house...

5.0 out of 5 stars Scandi cookery book
Wonderful book and a must for the kitchen. Recipes are interesting and information is good, illustrations add to the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
This is a beautifully designed book, with glorious photos and interesting recipes. I particularly like this book for it's use of spelt flour for baking, so you are keen on avoiding wheat (note that spelt does contain gluten so no good for those seeking gluten free) there are plenty of recipes to choose from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Very inspiring book. Love the recipes, have already used the jam ones, and the gratin. Lovely to read, pictures great. Worth every penny.
