Editorial Reviews

In 1982, Music For A New Society sounded exactly like its title: something futuristic, a new kind of songwriting exercise. Now, it sounds better than ever, packed with stark, almost ghostly details and sounds that whir and flutter in and out of focus. A reissue of John Cale's classic 1982 album. Please note that the final three tracks are only available through download redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lustrous, Glassy Music - And The Odd Fright Or Too...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 8, 2016
This is a guaranteed 'Uneasy Listen'. Unavailable for Many years, 'Music For A New Society' makes a welcome re-appearance in 2016. I bought a vinyl copy, and it remains a gem of the disturbing kind - up there with similarly dark jewels as Neil Young's 'Tonight's The Night'. Cale sounds edgy and desperate at times; he also re-records one of his most melodic and beautiful ballads, 'I Keep A Close Watch' by way of a contrast. But stuff like the harrowing 'Taking Your Life In Your Hands' and the spoken 'Sanities' (with it's spooky repeated line "Her mother...white with time") and the more rocky 'Changes Made', and then the delicate 'Chinese Envoy' make this album one of Cale's finest, that I don't think he's quite bettered since. A lustrous wonder.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a double LP

Not a double LP, but it did come with digital code. Taking away 2 stars for falsely claiming it was a double album. Music is of course brilliant.

Un album qu'il faut absolument avoir dans sa collection de disques. Des textes poignants chantés avec une voix toute aussi poignante… Article de qualité.
