Product Description
Whit Stillman followed his delightful indie breakthrough Metropolitan with another clever and garrulous comedy of manners, this one with a darker edge. A pair of preppy yet constitutionally mismatched American cousins a salesman and a navy officer argue about romance and politics while working in the beautiful Spanish city of the film s title. Set during the eighties, Barcelona explores topics both heady (American exceptionalism, Cold War foreign policy) and hilarious (the ins and outs of international dating, the proper shaving method) while remaining a constantly witty delight, featuring a sharp young cast that includes Taylor Nichols (Boiler Room), Chris Eigeman (Kicking and Screaming), and Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite).

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2012Whit Stillman's output of four feature films over the past 20 years seems like a near-criminal act of cruel and unusual punishment inflicted on those who enjoy his movies. He's one of the rare filmmakers who knows how to ridicule/glorify the preppy class without judging the bubble in which they live. For those whose immediate knee jerk reaction might be to recoil from any story in this style, think of Preston Sturges and his amazing movie "The Palm Beach Story". "The Palm Beach Story" is one of the rare entries into this style of storytelling in which Whit Stillman so clearly excels. It is far easier in my opinion to play on preppy stereotypes for laughs, the best case being Dan Aykroyd's former country club pals attempting to woo their lady friends with a song in "Trading Places". As hysterical as that scene might be, I am more impressed with a filmmaker like Whit Stillman.
"Barcelona" is by no means an overt attempt to explore this universe of New England preppies the way his brilliantly written debut feature "Metropolitan" managed to do, but instead feels more like an intimate look at what happens to these kids once they grow up and go out into the world to make their mark. The film is hysterical, incredibly well written, and succeeds at making the women of Spain appear to be the most desirable and interesting women in the world a man could ever hope to come across. I highly recommend it to anyone and I hope that Stillman's latest movie "Damsels in Distress" is a sign of more Whit Stillman movies to come in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2016I lived in Spain during the late '90s and the cultural analysis provided by this film is an accurate representation of what is like being an American living overseas in Western Europe, especially Spain, and feeling like a representative of the country. I was extremely impressed at how this film portrayed the relationships between the American "guests" and their relationships with the host country. An excellent film for explaining culture shock and culture clashes. I highly recommend this film for anyone interested in cultural relations. Attitudes have changed a bit since the mid-90s when this film was made as there is a far greater presence of Americans in Barcelona, but the main analogies provided about American culture and the way the rest of the world views us are still largely accurate. Plus, the actual usage of Catalan in the film was a bonus for me as so few films produced in the US seem to portray the city and its culture and language accurately in this regard. Bonus points for that.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2016I wasn't sure what to expect when I decided to watch Barcelona. It was quirky and funny. Very enjoyable. Bounces between English and English sub titles, but easy to follow. Like how they weave in the European insight and way of looking at things.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2016This 1994 film was made 13 years after the actual fascist takeover of the US goofermint by the Raygun/ Bush/ Koop fraudocracy. It was six years after not only the commencement of criminal purpose manipulations of the financial "markets" in the US by fascist criminal gangs but also the felony abrogations of Article I of the US Constitution Amendments against heteros by the homosexual religionist gangs equivalent to those controlling all of Europe during and since the Dark Ages. So similar to Spain's own history as central to the European Inquisitions which seized the property of anyone who had anything to steal, even if they appeared to be devout members of the thieving Wholly Roman Umpire, along with torturing maiming and murdering via burnings at the stake and/or forced migration from Spain to north Africa. That history has been compounded by the more modern functioning of Spain as conduit for narcotics from South America and Africa into the European "markets". The politics which prevailed throughout the film were puzzling in relation to the realities of both countries and the ultimate human relations outcomes were at best obscure.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2016The story focuses primarily on two Americans abroad--the Capitalist (Ted) and the Military Man (Fred). The characters are intelligent, earnest, and naive. Commonly the best and most awkward parts of America and Americans. We walk with the two characters during the cold war and anti-american sentiment. The dialogue is fast and can be dense. No need to read too deeply into the subtext. It's right there in the "text." They are trying to find and become the best people that they can be and they find love along the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2022I like the dialogue, characters, and plot of this movie. Whit Stillman is one of my directors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun.
One of three classics made by Whit Stillman in the 1990s along with Metropolitan and Last Days of Disco. Hilarious and sometimes moving. Great fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sachlicher Barcelona-Reiseführer zum kleinen Preis

2.0 out of 5 stars Nicht empfehlenswert!
Das Video war sehr langweilig für mich. Wahrscheinlich weil die Erklärungen und Musik zum Einschlafen sind. Gott sei Dank ist Barcelona in Wirklichkeit viel aufregender und auf jeden Fall eine Reise Wert.
