Comfortable, fairly sharp, needs polish

Comfortable, fairly sharp, needs polish
I have XL hands and this knife is comfortable to hold. The blade is too close to my index finger for my comfort, so I dulled the first 1/2 inch or so for safety. The blade came sharp, but rough, like it was sharpened on a diamond sharpener, but never polished. 10 minutes on the ceramics at 25 degrees fixed that well enough.

I picked the boning knife up to complete my Buck PakLite set as I already have the Trophy set. (caper - 135 & skinner - 141).

Not only is the blade incredibly sharp, it's very comfortable in the hand.

I like the PakLite series due to how minimalist they are. There's no moving parts or screws to worry about.

The skeleton design makes cleaning them so much easier and lighter. This is key when you're hunting public land and have to hike a few miles in to your spot, every ounce counts.

I bought this in November and have already used it to process 5 white tail deer, and it's still incredibly sharp.

The nylon pouch with plastic insert is well made, it's very similar to the one that came with my trophy set. That pouch has lasted me 6 years now, and I expect the pouch for the boning knife will do the same.

Frankly, Buck has been going down in quality over the past decade. They used to be one of the prominent names on the market, so I bought my original PakLite Skinner with the idea that it would be a cheap little use and loose. It ended up lasting me about 7 years with very hard use in a warehouse job before micro fractures in the edge forced me to have to replace it. So, I got another, along with the sister flencing blade. It holds a good edge, is very comfortable in the hand (even without 5/50 cord wrapping, which a lot of folks do with skeletal handles), and is very lively in play. All in all, VERY good for the price and much better than a lot of other pieces of drek you find with a higher price tag.

Great boning knife, but will agree with some others that the sharpening job on the one I received needed a little work. No big deal as it's not like you will never have to sharpen it anyway. I would really like to see them offer as part of their Paklite field dressing kit with a pouch that could accommodate it along with the other knives and three fingered guthook. But back to the knife - The design is perfect for the application and is very comfortable in the hand and I've always been a big fan of Buck's 420HC. The sheath for this is ok, but I doubt many people would be wearing this knife on their belt anyway. (at least, I don't see the point of carrying this on my belt but in a pouch with my other Paklite knives).

I've been using another buck paklite model for years as a kitchen knife and loved it. This model only improves upon that. I can't say how it might be for hunters but the sheath is decent, the knife is very light and easy to clean. And best of all it comes very sharp. The first cut through meat will make you want to replace all your old dull steak knives with these.

I gave this 4 stars because what you see is what you get, but the knife is not comfortable in your hand. Aesthetically, this is a very beautiful knife, in a great case, and comes with a sharp blade, but after using it for more than just a few seconds, it becomes very uncomfortable to use.

I'd suggest buying the version with the orange or black coating on the handle. A beautiful knife, made by a great company, but was not the knife for me.

This is now one of my go to blades for cleaning a deer. Once the deer has been skinned, I switch to this blade. It works well for removing the backstrap and tenderloin when compared to traditional hunting knives. I was a little concerned that the lack of a proper handle might be a little awkward. On the contrary! I have found it to be an advantage with respect to the amount of control I have with the blade. Plus, since it's just one solid piece of metal cleaning the knife is a breeze. Use this knife in combination with the Buck Caper Knife and you cannot go wrong.
