Great collar- care for the leather and it will last!

Great collar- care for the leather and it will last!
This collar is really beautiful; we get a lot of compliments at the dog park. I was familiar with Perri's leather since I ride horses (they make halters, bridles, etc) and I thought I'd share some tips to help you make this collar last. This should address the negative reviews, including the colored padding peeling off. Leather used to be living skin; it no longer is of course, so since it can't be cleaned and moisturized naturally as skin is on a living cow YOU have to do that! If you don't the leather will dry out, peel, crack, rot etc. Thankfully it's not difficult or expensive to care for your leather. I highly recommend Leather CPR (available on here as well and common in tack shops/feed stores) an affordable all in one product that cleans and conditions. Use a small amount on a rag once or twice a month; wipe of any excess, don't let any product sit on the leather and cake up; you especially want to keep seams clean and gunk free or they will rot and the collar will come apart over time. If you don't want the collar to stretch, have a separate walking collar or harness. If pressure is applied to leather (ie a dog pulling) it will stretch. My dogs are tough on these collars; they swim in them, wrestle and occasionally play bite on the collars, they run through mud, etc. with maintenance they hold up well. No peeling what so ever. Did I mention they're beautiful? They look really nice. We paid the same price for a significantly less high quality collar at Petsmart that fell apart; this collar will LAST! The padding is more comfortable in the dogs neck as well. Photo shows my lab with a 14.5 inch; medium fits her well on the middle hole.

This is a really beautiful little collar for my (about 20#) black w. brindle short-haired dog. It's a bright, pretty flash of copper color on my little girl dog who is not at all a girly-type pup. It's perfect, pretty, classy and well-made. I am extremely pleased with this purchase. The small fits her with 3 holes to spare on her 12 1/2" neck with not too much collar sticking out past the loop which holds the end of it in line with the rest of the collar. It seems that the measurement/sizing of dog collars is not particularly standardized, and I have already purchased one that was too small for her, so I was relieved when this collar fit so nicely. Highly recommended. I will update in the future regarding how it wears over time.
10/29/15: Update: It remains every bit as beautiful, virtually unchanged by three months of wear. The copper metallic trim remains bright and beautiful. It's perfect. I needed something for her that had a metal buckle because she somehow manages to chew on them. The plastic ones don't last at all with her and I usually have to cut them off R/T mangled buckles. This is a great collar. I fully expect now that she's full-grown, that it will last for years.
7/2/16: Update: This collar is awesome. It reminds me of the very utilitarian ones we used to get for the dog-buddies of my youth, which lasted for years. This one remains beautiful, highly functional and basically unchanged over the months of use. The upfront cost is relatively high, but it has already saved me money and shows little to no deterioration. Sometimes cheap is just a waste. This collar reflects pride in beautiful workmanship and real value. SO rare now!

My siblings and I got this for our first dog in 2015. Ten years later, it’s still in use (just on another dog) and just as beautiful as it was then. This is the same quality you would expect from a high-quality leather horse halter — supple, soft, thick, and durable. 10/10!

A very well-made, sturdy collar - not to mention attractive! I was a little apprehensive about the black-and-white snakeskin not "showing," per the photo at the time, its being on the inside, but this is not an issue.

I got the matching leash, as well. No worries re the snakeprint not showing there! My hands tend to blister and cut easily, or just become sore, so I usually wore bicycle gloves or the like when walking my large, and strong, dog. I don't need them with this leash, as the padding in its handle makes it comfortable for me to hold onto - even when she's mid-lunge, having spotted a person or dog she must greet *immediately*! I assume the collar is just as comfortable for her to wear. (I figured a "leash review" would be relevant here per this comfort factor.)

UPDATE: I'm taking away one star; the end of the collar is too short to stay for any length of time under the "loop" meant to hold it down. (I'm using the second hole from the end, so of course this won't always pertain.) I worried about the collar coming off, so have fashioned an elastic hair "tie" to act as a second, very tight loop. I had just about an inch of leather to "work with;" if I had to use the first (closest to the end) hole, I'd have had less than 1/2 inch. They put these loops on for good reasons - perhaps primarily to prevent a dog's snagging a loose, hanging end on something - so this is something I wanted to point out. Also, I just discovered, while measuring, an inch or so around tear on the edge of the interior "snakeskin," which I now realize is lambskin. I don't think this material was mentioned before, but I could've just missed it; I have a "thing" about it. So; the leather is very durable, the lambskin not so much, and I'll have Krazy Glue on my fingers for a week.

So, I strongly suggest you call and ask for measurements re the hole placements.

Great quality, thick real leather. Not the cheap garbage you come across so frequently these days. Looks great and my pup seems to enjoy it. Fair warning though, I bought large and it is huge, she's only a 6 month old GSD, so she has room to grow, but it's on the tightest hole and the end was flapping around like crazy, so I had to use velcro to make sure it doesn't flap around anymore. All in all, I would highly recommend this collar.

I purchased this collar for my six month old retriever pup. It is a bit large (long) for him right now but I’m sure he will grow into it. I chose the black colour and it looks great against his golden coat.
This is a top quality collar. It is soft and supple leather which I believe will last many years. Nice stitching and good solid buckle. I was so impressed with the collar that I also purchased the matching leash!
