- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2012This book hardly needs more positive press, but I'll add my work of appreciation anyway. I have attended several exhibits showing the history of the Bible from the Dead Sea Scrolls to early European and English printed Bibles. My own institution, Ashland Theological Seminary, has created a permanent exhibition like this featuring artifacts from our own collection. This inexpensive book essentially puts such an exhibit in your hands. The text is well written and highly informative, but, for me, the real treasures are the reprints of pages of landmark texts in the history of the composition and translation of the Bible. With these, some poster board, and plenty of Mod Podge, your church or Sunday School group could create a (facsimile) Bible museum by means of which to educate young and old about the complex and rich history of the Scriptures' transmission. The prints of pages from the Qumran Isaiah scroll, Codex Sinaiticus, the all-important P46 (the Chester Beatty Papyrus of the Pauline epistles from 200 CE), and 7th c. Vulgate are especially striking and, for me, worth the whole price of the book.
If you're interested in educating your whole congregation about the history of the Bible, buy one of these, have a craft day, and dedicate part of your lobby or a Sunday School room to a temporary exhibit.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2011The use of the word "Fascinating" in the title of this book is NOT a misnomer! What a story! To see God's hand at work down through the centuries in the history of the preservation of His inspired Word is amazing. The book is well-organized and the additional inserts of the various translations is an added bonus. I used this book extensively in a Bible study and the participants loved seeing the copy of the Great Isaiah Scroll and others that were included. This book is a great value and Mr. Stone did a marvelous job bringing all of the information together. Highly recommended for everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2017This is an amazing book. I brought it to my small group. People were impressed that they could see facsimiles of the actual papyri. They didn't have to just be told "it was actually a scrap of papyrus."
People in my small group have been expressing frustration that they don't know how the Bible that they were handed got here. They have had to accept it from church authorities. Now they have their own accurate information about the story and the history of the Bible.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2015Very interesting read. I always wondered where the original documents came from that make up the bible. This gives a thorough explanation of not only the oldest documents that became the old and New Testaments but also the origins and differences of different bible versions, including the motivations of their publishers/translators. It's not exactly a secular history. The author does use some facts to support some Christian hypotheses but its not overbearing. All in all an interesting, easy yet informative read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2017Thoroughly researched for the serious Bible student. However, many conclusions are stretching the Biblical meaning. Some of the thoughts do indeed expand the students process of study, for which I appreciated. Well worth the reasonable cost to add this amazing book to you library.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2014When I ordered this book, I admit I didn't read much of the description. I'm glad I didn't, because it was a wonderful surprise to get it in the mail and find 23 beautiful inserts included with it. They are beautiful, clear and have descriptions on the back side of each insert.
The book itself is very well done. The illustrations are clear with in depth descriptions. The writing is very easy to read and it's very informative. Very impressed with this book and have already recommended it to several people.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2015Larry Stone has made a very impressive teaching tool by making this book. The inserts -- including full-size replicas of pages of some of the most important manuscripts of the Bible -- alone are worth the price of the book. Stone's information is accurate and his writing-style is clear and precise. To introduce textual criticism to Bible students, whether in Bible colleges or in Sunday Schools or home schools, this is the introduction to the background of the text of the Bible that you want.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2019This is in a class all it’s own. It is rich in copies of important documents. The research behind it is obvious. It’s a true history that does not “push” a particular religious point of view.
