I tried 2 other "no hum" fan controllers and both turned the fan so incredibly slow when not all the way on high that they were returned. Now, in all fairness, I was not trying to use this to control a traditional ceiling fan. Rather I am using this to control a gazebo fan that is probably more electrically akin to a box/oscillating fan than a ceiling fan. Don't know what genius took a great product mean to be suspended 10 feet in the air and put a rotary dial switch on it. . . you have to get a ladder out to turn the thing on and off! It's the only gazebo like fan I've found for the metal, buy it at big box home improvement type gazebos though. But I digress.
This switch met and exceeded my expectations for that application. It does hum a little as some other reviewers have noted, but it's so quiet that you really have to know what you're listening for to hear it and if the fan is turned up enough to really move any air at all, the air movement noise totally drowns it out. In fact it's so quiet we keep leaving it on on accident even with the speed turned down low.
