How to Maintain Your Carburetor

Carb

Carburetor Problems

Carburetor problems can be caused by blockage from debris, dirt and gasoline deposits. This will cause the main jet to become clogged and prevent the engine from starting.

Carb

Cleaning Your Carburetor

General carburetor maintenance can prevent serious damage from occurring. Using carburetor cleaner and compressed air, any debris can be removed from the main jet. Cleaner will dissolve any deposits in your carburetor and choke.

Briggs Carb

Removing Your Carburetor

Disconnect the spark plug lead and secure it away from the spark plug. Then, remove the air cleaner assembly. Turn off the fuel valve at the base of the fuel tank. Disconnect the carburetor removing the nuts and sliding the carburetor off the studs.

Maintenance

General Lawnmower and Small Engine Maintenance

Are you changing your oil, replacing your air filter and adding fuel stabilizer to your outdoor power equipment as frequently as you should be? General engine maintenance will help your engine last longer and run better. Using genuine parts on your Briggs & Stratton engine will make sure it fits right and runs the way it’s supposed to.

Installation was quick. Replacement took about thirty minutes The carb is preset so nothing to adjust. You will need a tiny bit of gasket cement to seal the carb to the intake. Started right away and it runs smoothly.

Worked like a charm on my b and s yard machine 300. Thank you G. Wilson for your input/ knowledge and help deciding on this one. Several looked the same more or less but you need to get the one with the butterfly flap valve for the yard machines. Saved myself $200.00 as I was pretty close to just going down to hd for a new one. This time I'll empty the gas out at the end of the season and try not to use ethanol or corn made gas. Screws up the carb according to G Money!

Lawnmower wouldn't start. In years past when I had trouble getting a mower going in the spring I'd spray a little starting fluid on the air cleaner and I'd be good to go for the whole season. I tried that this year and sure enough my mower started right up and ran until it consumed the ether and then stopped running. I repeated the starting fluid scenario 3 or 4 times. Then I stared at my mower for awhile, it wasn't getting any fuel. I looked around and came across this carb for only $37. How could I go wrong? It arrived in only 3 days on a Saturday afternoon. That was perfect timing for me to do the replacement. I had already watched a video on Sears Parts Direct that demonstrated the swap. The video demonstrated everything I would need to do and was definitely worth the 6 minute investment of time. All in all I think I spent a total of about 5 minutes to do the replacement. It took me longer to find the tools i needed than it did to do the job. BTW, you don't need need much - a 7 and 8 mm socket and pliers to release the fuel line clamp. Be ready with a container to drain the fuel from your tank, when you pull off the fuel line the gasoline begins draining immediately, the line is only about 4 or 6 inches long so you'll need some thing that can fit between your fuel tank and the lawn mower deck to collect the gasoline. Ok, now for the best part - I pushed the primer 3 times and pulled the starter. First pull and it fired right up! I'm thrilled!. This was a great investment and took far less time than buying a new mower!

Appears to be an exact replacement. Haven't installed it yet. Having just changed the blade, the engines "hunting" went away, and now just purrs at a normal rpm. Big surprise that the heft of the blade, made such a change. The pull start effort increased substantially as well! Very sandy soil abrades the entire blade, making it too light a load for the motors governor.

This part did exactly what it needed to: save me a lot of time and hassle. To put this into perspective, a rebuild kit is about $20. In the time I would have spent going through disassembly and reassembly of my old carburetor, I could put this replacement on, mow my lawn, and drink a frothy PBR. Bottom line: if you don't like screwing with tiny parts, but know the symptoms of a poor carburetor and want it fixed, this is the solution.

Second, it shipped faster than the Prime items I ordered in the same cart. The estimated 5-8 business days was over kill. If you can buy PBR in your liquor store (or gas station, depending on the state), I'd say 8 days is an exaggeration.

Lastly, if you are here, you likely have an idea of whether or not this will fix your small engine problem. But, in the event that you aren't sure, let me shed a little light. 1) this won't fix the engine if it doesn't fit. Find the model number of your motor. 2) if you are getting zero fire whatsoever, then I would recommend a different spark plug first, then look into this option. 3) if your engine will fire for a second or two--with some starting fluid or priming--then you may have just found your solution. Good luck!
