Amazon, for some reason, says that the Curt hitch #12221 will also work for the base Pontiac Vibe but Curt's website says NO. After emailing them, they said that 12221 is ONLY for the GT model. And they, of course, were right. The 12221 would have hung down lower to accommodate the GT's lower body styling.

As soon as I received the hitch I took the bolts outside to try them out as a lot of people say you need to WD-40 or scrub out the holes. Maybe if you live somewhere with snow and salt. My car has mainly been in Florida and I could hand screw them all in just fine. Install was super easy. Dad and I each took a side and he tightened them as far as he could. We then drove to O'Reilly's and borrowed their torque wrench. I'm 3 days into a 10 day cross-country drive and the hitch has been amazing. Fits right under the car.

Had no problems. Sprayed some silicone in the frame threads and in all 4 bolts went. I live in the Central Valley of Calif, no rust. Son and I had it in and ready to mount a bike rack within 20 minutes. Perfect fit and looks very good from behind. When we screwed in the bolts near the muffler we had to move it slightly out of the way but the muffler gave just enough for the bolts to lineup. Almost hidden under the rear plastic bumper. Wife is very happy and son is proud of his work. Have no fear buying this product, it is what your looking for.

Good quality hitch. Frame threaded holes were not corroded so it bolted on quickly. As mentioned by others the hitch may hit the tailpipe or muffler on a 2003 Vibe AWD causing rumbling vibration sounds at certain RPM's when exhaust is heated. Will do as someone else suggested and try to add a little clearance by use of a hammer on the muffler edge near the hitch. Would have been a 5 star if not for the rumbling vibration sounds.

Amazon listed this as compatible with my 2007 Pontiac Vibe, base model. Installation was easy and it seemed to fit well. I used a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Initially everything seemed fine, however after driving the car for longer periods of time when the exhaust system heated up it apparently expanded enough to make intermittent contact with the hitch. The resulting rattling noise was loud and unbearable.

I don't know whether the car's exhaust system or the hitch I received is out of spec or what, but I contacted CURT Manufacturing and they verified this is the correct hitch model for my car. I told them where it was making contact (at the top edge on the back of the center tube) with the muffler and they suggested I could grind down that edge of the tube a little to resolve the problem.

At that point I should have just returned the hitch instead, but I liked the way it looks on the car and I thought a little grinding would be as easy as boxing up and sending back the hitch and starting over with something else. After grinding the edge with an angle grinder and driving for an extended period of time, it seemed like the problem was solved. However, after a few weeks it became clear that hitting a bump in the road or driving on a rough road was enough to cause the muffler to contact the hitch again. It was not as loud or persistent as before but still very unpleasant.

I determined that it was no longer hitting on the edge where I used the grinder, but now the back corner of the muffler on the driver's side was just barely making contact with the hitch. I ended up taking a sledge hammer to that corner of the muffler to smash the lip a bit to keep it away from the hitch. Primitive and a little unsightly, but effective. At least you can't see it behind the hitch.

So there has been no more rattling, and it works well and looks good on the car, but this hitch caused me a lot of headaches and extra work. I think the manufacturer could have allowed more clearance around the muffler, which may have prevented my problems, but they didn't. If anyone else experiences any rattling/muffler contact at all after installing this hitch, I would definitely recommend returning it and trying another brand with a different design.

2008 Vibe, all factory stock components. Hitch is/was not a 30 minute install. While the intent is there and general fit up locations are good, actual installation required multiple removals and installs. Finally did some grinding and re-painting to get it to not hit the muffler. Might be coming back off yet again as under loaded conditions, still hitting the muffler. Not sure why, but in manufacture it would have been quite easy to just eliminate the interference (as I have done with the grinder now). Its OK I guess, but don't count on it being a 100% sure fit.

I installed this on my own after running all over town to find a 12mm x 1.25 tap to crank in and clean off the rusty threads on our 2004 AWD Vibe. ACE Hardware ended up having the tap in stock after checking multiple hardware/auto stores. We used the hitch for a bike rack and also had the painful experience finding out you should not use an extension to go from 1.25" to 2" to make a bike rack fit. The rack was very wobbly and had a big yellow warning sticker on the bike rack not to do so after I had it put together and installed... Luckily we found a 4 bike rack with 1.25" attachment on craigslist. So far we have had no issues with the hitch.

After using both WD-40 and PB Blaster (recommended by the guy at U-haul) to hopefully clean off some rust off the threads with the help of a $3 battery post/terminal wire brush, I still could not get the bolts started. Once I tracked down the tap and spent the time cranking it in the bolts screwed in without issue. Grease them up if you ever plan on changing the hitch out or moving it to another vehicle.

Hopefully this will save someone some time. If you live in an area where the bolt threads may be rusted you can save a lot of time by looking up the thread size for your vehicle and buying the tap and wrench along with the hitch.
