In The Wilds: Drawings by Nigel Peake Hardcover – April 20, 2011

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

In the Wilds is a collection of artist Nigel Peake's hand-drawn observations of rural life. From the trees, fields, lakes, and rolling hills that define the country landscape, to the farm houses, tractors, fences, and telegraph poles that build it, Peake's obsessively detailed pencil and ink drawings and beautifully muted watercolors capture the slow moving rhythm of his surroundings. In a time when everyone seems to be seeking relief from the fast pace of everyday life, In the Wilds offers an escape to a countryside as timeless as it is idyllic.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Shows the whimsy behind the obsessive detail of [Nigel Peake's] illustrations, from the bird tracks that circle a tree trunk to the fallen shed and hay bales wrapped in plastic - colorful reimaginings that capture an inherent joy about his surroundings." -- Christian Science Monitor, April 27, 2011

"A lovely collection of drawings about farms, fields, and birds. It is pretty much irresistible, taken from childhood impressions and Peake's current life in a one-road Irish village, where he is mistaken for the postman." --TheMorningNews.org, May 9, 2011

It was just what I had expected as I had looked at a copy a friend had and that made me want the book. Service on delivery, packing and all was great.

I was glad to receive my copy of Nigel Peake's "In the Wild" from the moment I touched it's textured coloured cover. The drawings are beautiful. Patterns and details of the countryside. Loved it.

Love Nigel's cartographer's view of the world, how he explains everything in beautifully arranged and colored planes (3D lovers should abstain ;-)
I own this small book and "In the wilds" and "In the City". All three books are enjoyable but I don't think they are representative of some of Peakes more spectacular work I came across online.

This book contains beautiful work arraigned and printed in vivid colors as they should. I just wish the book was larger.

Saw the book one day - it belonged to a friend - and found it mesmerising! I just had to get my own copy!
The impact of pen and ink drawings, sometimes with colour added, and the detail is fantastic. As a textile worker I found it all very stitchy and was getting lots of ideas for projects. The mark making in each drawing is incredible and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in art or not..there's something for everyone and all ages!
Makes a great coffee table book. Whether you have just 5 mins or an hour, there's lots to see and think about. ....

I love this hybrid mix between art and archeology. I love the sense of order and the way that everything is fined down and yet you look at these images and sense how much has been added by the way the scene has been interpreted. I look at these over and over again and never get bored of them.

A beautiful book, nicely bound and a pleasure to hold. The illustrations are 'gentle' and thought provoking. I'm more than satisfied with this product.
