- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2015First off, I have used this pedal design in the 80s and looked everywhere for its modern day equal, at a good price.
VP's seem identical to the ones I ran with back then, so I have experience the pedal bite you can get from this style.
Other reviewers have stated they come a bit tight in the bearings out of the package, and this was true for the ones I
received. However I know why, the tightness lessens the chance of these pedals biting you, at a loss of spin. It took less
than 5 minutes, to loosen the bearing cone and make them spin nicely.
The beauty in the platform shape of this pedal, was you could place your foot on the pedal at any angle and get grip.
This was for tricks and really aggressive riding, however the work wonderfully in much calmer, mixed weather commuting.
Since I purchased them, I had a minor accident and dented the left pedal, easy fix, I removed the outer cage, and reshaped with pliers.
I had also debated on black or just silver, I bought black, but the dent scratched the paint so I stripped off the paint
to the aluminum underneath. In retrospect, I would have just bought the silver. I suggest clear coating the paint, if you want to
avoid scratches.
I've taken these pedals out in an massive flood, waist high water, mud on my boots, and the pedals grabbed onto my soles,
with the mud or water not effecting grip. Cheap plastic pedals or ones with very small studs for grip, would have made me slip off
the pedals, and that can be really painful.
Plus they are good size and not a tiny platform, if you have larger feet, you will feel like you have solid support beneath you.
I couldn't be happier with the pedals, for the price, almost the same as the ones I bought, geez 30 years ago.
Now if you are new to this shape of pedal, be ready to get bitten, it will happen, back of the calf, lick of the shin, you have
two cougars strapped on your pedal arms. Treat it like having a dangerous pet, it will make you blood brothers to all bear cage pedals.
I don't mind, for the "any where I put my foot I have solid grip" and they look beastly on the bike to boot.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2020I swapped out some old polymer VP-870 pedals for these new VP-747 bear-traps on my old Schwinn Impact Mtb. The polymer 870s are likely 20+ years old and still spin smooth and tight but had lost surface traction with harder shoe soles. The VP-747 teeth provide very secure slip-proof footing with any shoe sole. Your foot will stay where you put it. These pedals also look great on a classic mountain bike. I chose to leave the reflectors off for a simpler look. Out of the box these pedals were a little stiff turning but are spinning quite well after a few miles use. I peeked under the dust caps and it looks like a cup and cone ball bearing arrangement which means these will be easy and inexpensive to service should they ever get sloppy or bind. The main parts could easily last forever. Overall the construction is very sturdy, good fit and finish, with very fine cut threading on the spindles. This is the 3rd generation of the VP 747 bear-trap and I am pleased that this classic pedal is still available. For such a robust all metal pedal, I expected a significant weight increase, but the 747s are only about 5% heavier than the polymer 870s. One thing I noticed was not so much visible grease on the bearings. I might open these up and insure they are well greased before I put many miles on them. This is definitely a great pedal for trail and urban use. I am very pleased.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020Easy to install. Great construction and durability. My ebike pebals broke and I couldn't get the make or Walmart to warranty them. I have never broke a pedal tell then. So I replaced them with these for now and they are great. They do bend like the plastic one do. I can stand up without worrying they will break like my ebike pedals did. I weigh 230 and they hold me with ease. I tried other
pedals made of plastic and they would hold me but you could see them bend a little. The metal spikes on the pedals have not damaged my shoes or me. One pedal was a not as shiny as the other. But it still works. They strong pedals for a cheap price. An they are no to much heavier then the plastic ones. They screwed on easy and stayed tight.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2020Undeniably bear trap shin slicers! Love these designs and styles since I was a kid. These are definitely not good to go out of the box as the spindles had zero grease and the pedals sounded like a bag of glass when spun. A little elbow grease (and red tacky grease) and we are up and running. Still a deal compared to name brand units
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2020When I opened the box I was transported back in time to my bmx days. I smiled inside. Then I let out an audible groan as I tried to spin the pedal. One made a grinding noise, completely dry. I could feel the metal grinding together as it attempted to spin. The other was worse. It wouldn't spin. I sprayed some WD40 on them and said a prayer. They loosened a little. I'm going to spray more WD40 on them and let them sit overnight as I send good vibes to them in my dreams. I want these pedals to work. We shall see.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017First of all the "Vendor" who sold and shipped these pedals from California to NY deserves "5 STARS"!! Their service is Awesome!! The product itself gets 3.5 stars by me. Nice pedals, look great, operate as intended, look great on my "Rat Rod" build, but they need real ball bearings like the pedals I have from the 30's to mid 70's. As a replacement pedal for a "Big Box Store" bicycle, you should be very happy with these pedals. Know that they aren't Campy quality by a long shot.....Not even on the same planet! Typical of most products produced today, use them up and throw them away.........But why produce rebuildable pedals that will last 50 to 75 years or more, you can't make your monthly numbers like that! These pedals are NOT what you want on your 1969 Raleigh Grand Prix, Record, or Super Course, etc. Know your intended use for this product and you should be very happy with them. I will definitely purchase more of these pedals for other projects.
