We had previously bought two SPT SD-014V desiccant dehumidifiers to dehumidify workshop areas during the winter, when our compressor dehumidifiers can't operate. We would run a bit of heat in those workshops, and the added dehumidification was a bonus. The units have been very useful and have done their job well.

We now have a much larger space that requires winter dehumidification, and we bought the EcoSeb DD322EA Simple dehumidifier on the basis of its specifications. It promised to be a much more powerful and efficient dehumidifier -- AND IT IS.

Cutting to the chase, we collected almost exactly 14 oz of water in 1:09 on the high (740W) setting, at 59% RH and 63F, when we should have collected a full pint (16 oz). This is 88% of the rated collection rate, which is probably within the margin of error. Our calculations put it at an 18.3 pint per day unit on high. It takes 1.7 kWh to pull a liter of water, making our electric cost (at 14 cents per kWh) about US$0.24 / liter of dehumidification. This is approximately twice as efficient as the most efficient setting (medium) on the SPT unit. Moreover, we can pull quite a bit more moisture in this setting.

We also tested the low (400W) setting and collected 6.8 oz / hr, which is approximately the same amount of water collected per electricity expended. However, during our testing period, the RH of the central area of our house dropped from 59%RH to 55% RH, making dehumidification less efficient. We imagine we would have collected more condensate per kWh on the low setting if the RH had not dropped; therefore we imagine the low setting really is more efficient. We will try to duplicate RH conditions later to provide better test results.

Compared to the SPT unit, this unit is smaller, slightly less attractive, more powerful, and twice as efficient. Construction appears a bit more solid. Cost is comparable, and this unit is cheaper by far when one considers energy cost (about US$75 to run continuously for a month on high). It lacks casters on the bottom, so it is possible to trap water beneath the bottom if there is any spillage.

I like the idea behind a quiet dehumidifier. However, when the unit starts making loud squealing noises (likely a pump) after 3 weeks of moderate usage, and there is no number for tech support, it is frustrating. It took the support people 1 week to get a hold of me after I emailed them about an issue. There's no FAQ section on their website, one person doing support, poor communication... I returned the unit. I will consider it again, once the company has a rep in US or their one-man support section is beefed up and on par with other smaller companies.

UPDATE: I tried a second unit. After 3 weeks of moderate operation, it is making the high pitch noise. That noise is loud enough to wake up a light sleeper if they're in the same room with the unit. #2 goes back, no replacement. The hunt for the quiet dehumidifier continues.

Product worked great but died exactly 3 months after warranty is up. This is my 2nd and last ecoseb. They are designed only to function until the warranty is up (2 years).

I have owned two of these models. Unfortunately, one worked for just under a year and now is making a horribly loud high-pitched squealing noise and an odor of hot plastic is coming from it. The product has a 2-year warranty. II have repeatedly emailed from the contact form on the manufacturer's website and get no reply. I am hoping to get a response by posting here.

UPDATE. No answer from manufacturer. No phone numbers, no address. No way to contact them except a web form, which gets no response. They are hiding. Clearly they don't stand behind their products. Don't buy.

FURTHER UPDATE. Now the company has a phone number listed on the website. When you call you get a phony answering service and they never call you back. So disappointed!! Will never buy anything they sell again. They don't stand behind their products.

FINAL UPDATE: The company has sent me a new unit which is great. However, it took way too much effort and trouble to get them to do it.
