- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2018Size: 2-BayVerified PurchaseUpgraded from an old Synology. Primary use is for movie, music, and photo playback via Rokus, PCs, and Android devices. Also use for data backup. Transfer rates via USB ports are up to 110 MB/s and over network via wifi around 10 MB/s (limited by wireless devices not NAS). Currently have a 2tb Western Digital green drive and a 4tb Western Digital red drive - zero issues setting up and use. Did install OS to red drive and then installed green drive later. I also have a 256gb flash drive plugged in for read only stuff. Without going into reasons/details - Mac guys should get Synology but everyone else - this product is great for NAS related stuff. Better price than Synology and Qnap along with numerous apps to serve almost every need. Synology interface is a little nicer and easier to use, Qnap looks more professional and has that metal build appeal but this definitely holds its own. Not one weird issue related to files of 6gb transfer, 1000s of small files, streaming to Roku/Galaxy devices/Firesticks, connecting to external drives (had to purchase exfat license), or intersystem file transfer. One reason I purchased this model was for the power savings feature over the non-intel chip but if you use the max power savings feature - it will only wake at set times. The intel chip is still more power efficient than the other models but it might not be worth the cost. Fan is also quiet while providing more than adequate cooling. Eventually I will be installing a 4tb SSD and regularly updating the second bay with large hard drives. USB port speed is important for data backup as Raid does not protect from severe power spikes nor theft (I've experience both). I back up to an external drive monthly so the USB speed is a time saver (my very old Synology took almost 5 days to backup - USB 2.0 ugh).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2019Size: 4-BayVerified PurchaseEasy to use and setup. I upgraded my old QNap from dual Bay and wanted some Plex ability. This unit can easily handle Plex server duties in the 1080p and under range. Also the access of your file from a mobile phone anywhere is great. No more separate computer to run. It handles the connection and all you have to do it forward the port you chose to use to access you nas externally.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2018Size: 2-BayVerified PurchaseBought this on 9/25/2017, and on 9/25/2018 it died. Last night (24th) it was working fine since I use it as a plex server. This evening, I tried accessing it and it wouldn't connect. Noticed the sleep-light wasn't turned on. As I looked at the system and noticed absolutely none of the lights were on except for the light in the power brick. I also noticed the ethernet lights would turn on if I plugged in the ethernet cable, and they would go out if I unplugged the power. So power was clearly reaching the unit but something on the motherboard was dead. I unplugged it, waited, plugged back it, but it never auto-started after power failure like it usually does. Tried holding power button in various combinations - and nothing. Internal fan never even twitched in attempt to rotate, hard drives remained silent and still. It's connected via ethernet to my wireless router - and the router reported nothing was connected in that port. It seems as if the motherboard itself is dead.
Update: I contacted Asus who initialized an RMA process under their 3 year warranty and they sent me the RMA form to fill out which I returned a week ago. It has been absolute silence from them the whole week. Furthermore, their support portal automatically registers you an account and generates a password that fails to actually work when you attempt to log in and check the status of your ticket. Resetting the password requires logging into your Asustor NAS first and initializing the reset from there. That's a problem when your Asustor box is dead. I emailed support again asking them to help me access my support ticket and to get an update on the RMA process and they didn't reply to that all week either.
Update: It's been almost 2 weeks and zero contact from Asus support. This NAS has a 3 year warranty - but Asus refuses to actually deal with the customer and fulfill their part of the bargain. They also never fixed the login for their ridiculous support portal so I still cannot log into the system and check my ticket status. I cannot recommend this product, nor can I recommend any Asus product based on the awful customer support they provide (which is no support at all). Basically this incident of support has ensured that I will never purchase an Asus product again.
Final Update: Coming up on almost 3 weeks, Asustor remains silent. I tried calling their main USA support number (starting in 909) and it lead to a spam robot talking about some "free promotion offer!" scam. I feel I've probably been added to a spam list now thanks to Asustor. I tried 2 other numbers listed on their site and they simply went to empty voicemail boxes "you've reached ### ### #### beeeeeep" and that's it. So their phone numbers are trash too. I called main Asus support which was a real phone number and talked with a person who stated they couldn't help me since Asusustor, though a subsidiary, still operated independently. They provided me with that spam number and after I told them it was a bad number they still didn't have any other resources at hand to help. Finally, I simply contacted Amazon for help, explained the situation and they offered me a full return and refund even though the return date expired in November last year!!!! THIS is why I trust to shop on Amazon.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2019Size: 4-BayVerified PurchaseThis is the best and most economical network drive ever. Had to give one star off because unless you are pretty tech-savvy it can be a real pain. Not enough instructions included, but plenty of YouTube videos out there. This took more time than I liked. All I wanted was a contained in my home intranet (not internet) storage system. The instructions would have me make an account with the manufacturer online. It may have made it easier, but not sure it would stand in-our-home-intranet, alone, as I had hoped-for. (FYI it may be much more useful to many and easier to set up, had I gone online to do the whole thing as the YouTube videos suggest, it may be easier to setup that way), But, our online connection is spotty at best. Now, I was able to get the system I wanted to work, and it seems to keep working in our home, even when the internet is on and off all the time, and once established, it is a ultra-easy to use. For the price, the extra time for research and hookup was well worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2017Size: 2-BayVerified PurchaseThis NAS is a real workhorse. An awesome blend of hardware, software, and price point.
Other have left depth reviews about the features onboard. The main ones that stand out for me are the full support for VMs, deep unix control, and HDMI output for prosaic home media center operations.
One of these could be configured in many different ways for in-home / installed media, wall-based data, and other points of engagement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great for a Plex server
Size: 2-BayVerified PurchaseVery easy to setup and use. Running a Plex server off this NAS, works remotely and on my local network with the router configured properly. Plays in 720p for all shows and 1080p without stuttering for some. Good value for the price.
