The sheer splendor of his voice, now velvety, now rugged as it charges and lilts through Osmin's tirades and ditties, can take one's breath way. What a fool the beauty is who rejects this beast. --Matthew Gurewitsch, Opera News

Among 5 great Mozart operas, presented by Salzburg Marionette Theater, "The Abduction" is the most successful, and for the following reasons: 1. The opera itself is better suited to marionette staging. 2. The sets are particularly imaginative and colorful. 3. The muppets are very animated. 4. The musical cuts are minimal, as well as Sir Peter Ustinov's commentaries. 5. And the last, but not the least, the performance is second to none. It is the famous Fricsay 1954 recording, and it sounds even better with this production's visuals. No need to spend big money on this DVD, as it can be found at a very reasonable price. Recommended, despite the absence of subtitles and the fact that the narrator talks over the overture (imagine someone in the audience doing that). (The DVD freezes for about a second in 2 places, but this is not a manufacturing defect - I played disks from 2 different releases, and they all had the same flaw. It comes from the source, what adds to the impression of carelessness by the studio. Perhaps one day the entire series will receive a quality reissue it deserves. Until then, this will do.)
