Saint-Saens holds a vital place in the history of French chamber music. At a time when his compatriots were more devoted to opera and song,.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2024Did the people complaining about the performance and sound on this disc listen to it on their car radio in heavy traffic? I don't understand what the naysayers are hearing on this Naxos disc performed by Cristina Ortiz and the Fine Arts Quartet that I, most of the other Amazon reviewers, and multiple professional reviewers enjoyed unstintingly. The piano and strings are out of tune? Nonsense. The piano is recessed compared to the strings? Nonsense, the balance sounds fine to me, with the piano NOT drowning out the strings which happens way too often in recordings of chamber music.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2014I don't understand the rave reviews this CD has received in British media. These are just adequate performances at best. The performances lack involvement and are bereft of passion. Moreover, as happens much too often, the sound quality on Naxos is a let-down. The overall recorded sound lacks accoustics and the piano sounds subdued, making the harmony between the strings and the piano sound wrong, which may explain why a previous reviewer said the piano was out of tune.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2013This CD consists of Camille Saint-Saens Piano Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 41, his Barcarolle in F Major, Op. 108, and the Piano Quintet in A-minor, Op. 14.
It is difficult to know where to begin, as the entire disc is sooooooooo good! The Piano Quartet is marvelously performed, with just the right amount of light-handedness when appropriate, and lyrical but purposeful phrases from the piano applying driving pressure but without dominating. This is fine chamber music making, and the Fine Arts Quartet w/ Ms. Ortiz does a fantastic job here. The piece is evocative, captivating, and provocative. I must confess to listening to it again and again.
The Barcarolle is a wonderful choice as the middle piece, breathing and flowing while the piano makes point after point. This is a piece that is not heard often, and that is a shame because it is truly wonderful.
The disc finishes with the Piano Quintet, and again the Fine Arts Quartet and Ms. Ortiz bring this work to dramatic life right from the get-go. The work swirls and builds to crescendo after crescendo, with astonishing sensitivity throughout. The Andante movement is just a treat, and the closing Allegro movement is marvelously played and has a very organic feel to it.
I have nothing negative to say about this recording. It is fantastic! Highly Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2013The first recording of Saint-Saens chamber music, that I purchased over 40 years ago included the Piano Quartet Op. 41 and I have been collecting recordings of this beautiful work ever since. The Fine Arts Quartet and Ms. Ortiz have given us a beautifully considered account of the three works; personally, I find this my favorite recording. I do not hear the tuning issues indicated by another reviewer (my age?!) and thus to me this is a great recording of glorious music.
These are major works by Saint-Saens: certainly he considered them so. As recounted by Studd's in his biography of Saint-Saens, the Piano Quintet, an early work, was highly esteemed by Eduard Hanslick, the fearsome critic who ruled Vienna and was such a staunch supporter of Brahms and opponent of Wagner! Evidently, this quintet was performed frequently in Vienna until the First World War. The Quartet was composed during one of Saint-Saens most amazing years, 1875, which also saw the completion of the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Danse Macabre in its orchestral version. The piano quartet is filled with beautiful themes, superbly constructed, and involves cyclical thematic linking, where Saint-Saens brings back themes from the first movement in the exciting last movement.
The Barcarolle is simply gorgeous - now that it has been given this sumptuous performance, I expect that it will be picked up in a movie score! It is a magical short piece, once heard, I could not wait to hear it again.
All of these works are played with mastery, nuance and great affection. I cannot imagine any music lover not getting great satisfaction from this recording- you will be listening to this for years to come!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2013The Fine Arts Quartet have been championing lesser-known chamber works by major composers on the Naxos label. Their recording of the Saint-Saëns string quartets was wonderful, and now the ensemble has returned (along with pianist Cristina Ortiz) to play works for piano and string quartet. The great thing about this CD is that it covers three very different periods in Saint-Saëns' life (his late teens / early 20's, his 40's, and his 60's). Although the pieces should sound significantly different from each other, they actually blend well together, which isn't a bad thing. These works don't stand out among Saint-Saëns' finest works, but they do offer a charming panorama of some of his more intimate works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saints-Saens: Piano quartet & Quintet
A marvellous CD. Splendid music, nicely recorded. Saens-Saens' chamber music tends to hide under the glory of his orchestral works, but is really worth listening to

4.0 out of 5 stars Aimez-vous Brahms?

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As happens much too often, the sound quality on Naxos is a let-down. The recorded sound lacks accoustics here. Apart from that, I don't understand the rave reviews this CD has received. These are just adequate performances. The performances lack involvement and passion. Moreover, the harmony between the strings and the piano seems somehow uneven which may explain why a previous reviewer said the piano was out of tune.
There is a double CD set for sale on Amazon called "French Piano Quartets" with Quatuor Kandinsky issued by Virgin. Included in that set is the Saint-Saens piano quartet. There is a vast difference between that performance and the one by the Fine Arts Quartet here. The Kandinsky Quartet's performance is much better in my view and the recording quality is also better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unfamiliar Saint-Saens
The long-lived French composer was never fully appreciated in his own country. His compatriots recognised his brilliant technique as pianist and organist but they much preferred German composers. Towards the end of his life his compositions too conservative, lacking the fire and humour of his earlier works. These chamber works are by no means in the same class as his Organ Symphony or many of his concertos, but they bear repeated hearings
