As the album title teases, Change We Must gives you some variation on some previous Anderson's works, like the more orchestral State of Independence, and the less "Trevor Rabin"-like Hearts.
Here, Anderson takes, as he loves when he is doing solo work, a lot of liberties, resulting in an album with songs that sound very experimental, like Shaker Loops, which is like walking on thin ice, very difficult and easy to break, but this is an area in which the author excel.
I initially bought this CD years ago, but lost during a move. Now that I reacquired it, I appreciate it much more, and I feel the need to hear it way more frequently.
After Olias of Sunhillow, and some works with Yes, this is one of my favorites from one of the more creative of the old Progressive Rock movement. You can't go wrong with it!

Change We Must a Musical Masterpiece
I bought this on CD when it came out in the Autumn of 1994. I have bought 2 more copies over the years. I was lucky enough to meet Jon briefly many years after he recorded this album, he told me it came to him on a silent retreat in Hawaii with Nana Veary, a quiet small lady, she wrote the book Change We Must, in the book is a picture of Jon & Jane in silent meditation. The book & Jon’s Change We Must Album are highly spiritual, I Love each song on this Album/CD. The Kiss, Chagall Duet ,Under the Sun & The haunting Change We Must are standouts for me. Same Time, Same Place, Same Chance, under the SUN, as if to say we are One all of life under the Sun. If you are a big fan of Jon’s work with YES, Vangelis, & so many others, you must buy this CD. It holds up to this day as if he released it yesterday. To me it is his best Solo work. I hope you add it to your musical Library, I feel blessed that I was born in a time that YES & Jon Anderson made music, and I had the opportunity to see them both many times. God is Good.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2009Jon Anderson has produced a musical masterpiece with Change We Must. Due credit must be given to the amazing orechestral musicians (especially on violin/strings and piano) who provide the mystical atmosphere for Jon to take flight in. Jon's work with YES is amazing and profound in quality and quantity, but this CD does not try to compete. "Change..." does borrow from Jon's prior work with Vangelis (State of Independence) and YES (90125 Hearts), but the compilation is fresh and alive with nuance and original music. "Change..." is similar in quality with YES's most inspired works like Close to the Edge, Fragile, Relayer, and Going for the One. Only Jon's Olias of Sunhillow offers a musical experience which can compare/surpass in emotional and spiritual impact with "Change We Must". You can find some amazing Jon Anderson artistic visualizations of "Change We Must" and "Olias of Sunhillow" on You-Tube that will blow your mind!!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2017The concept: Jon makes an album with an orchestra (and sometimes choir). Does it succeed? Well, Jon takes lots of adventures, with varying levels of success. The various tracks here largely work out well. The best track is the title track, but "Chagall Duet" isn't far behind, and there are other good moments as well.
What it's not: a rock/pop album. So don't even go there.
What we aren't told: several tracks are the orchestra alone, making this rather like listening to Kitaro's DREAM than the Jon & Vangelis experience he appears to be revisiting [three tracks being J&V remakes]. Clearly, Jon doesn't intend us to listen to this just for his voice; it's a total experience, and the orchestral passages are integral to the whole.
The misstep: While I enjoy "Hearts" on 90125, this version leaves behind too many of the strengths of that version, without creating enough of its own.
conclusion: I'd certainly rather listen to this than the orchestral butchering of Yes' 70s music, which was useless, ill-conceived and ill-executed. This is well-conceived and well-executed, using strengths of both the orchestra and the singer. It does well what it sets out to do.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2010Change We Must is an amazingly beautiful, spiritual and transcendent body of work. Jon ventures into new territory with symphonic grace and lyrical inspiration. Then again, that's not new for Jon. Most all his work is filled with a deep sense of spiritual grace and beauty. What's really new about this is the symphony. Change We Must is not just an established rock legend using an orchestra to boost rock songs toward musical legitimacy. It is a brilliant and captivating album. A beautiful and meaningful work of art. Jon is a master at his craft. And if we do more than listen, we may even allow ourselves to be moved.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2017I had this album before and just bought it on cd. I can't believe I've never realized how much I enjoyed listening to it. One of my favorites.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2013Bought on basis of reviews. Sorry, not nearly as good as Olias and others. Even as a big fan of Jon, can't listen to it even once without feeling I wasted my money.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2016Beautiful solo Jon album, with orchestra. This is not a Yes album, and not a rock album. But you will hear Jon, the singer/songwriter/composer in ornately decorated settings here. Themes are love, unity, growth, moods are spiritual, peaceful, idyllic

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
This is one of my favourite albums. I'm not very good at writing record reviews, but I will do my best. Some of the tracks are covers of songs he did with Yes and Vangellis but they are so changed, he used a children's choir on this album and it really works so well, the children's voices bkend with his own voice perfectly. Two tracks really stand out for me, the Chagall Duet and the Candle Song but the whole album is lovely, and the last track Change we must sends shivers down my spine. It's a feel good album and very beautiful.

An excellent cd/album for any Jon Anderson fan. I’d long forgotten some of the old stuff and this is good to reminisce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Change We Must by Jon Anderson
This is an excellent reworking of some Yes/Jon Anderson songs by performing them with an orchestra. Mr. Anderson's voice has never been better and is easily at home among strings and cymbals.
