Product Description

Take your family to Bloom County with the quirky perennial favorite Opus n' Bill in A Wish for Wings That Work, a whimsical, wacky cartoon treat that's as funny for grownups as it is fun for kids! From Pulitzer Prize-winning author-artist Berkeley Breathed, it's a merry, madcap romp with Opus the earthbound penguin and his brain-fried feline cohort, Bill.Wrestling with an unfulfilled wish to soar through the air like any other self-respecting bird, the plucky penguin decides there's only one person who can make his aeronautic dream come true: Father Christmas. Bill the Cat coughs up a wild idea that just may bring a holiday miracle, but when ol' St. Nick finds himself in hot water on December 24th, the fate of Christmas itself suddenly depends on the kind of heroism that only comes in a penguin-sized package! Will Opus come to the rescue and learn the value of being true to oneself?

This is a little-known Christmas Special that follows a Penguin and his accidental BFF cat. This poor little penguin has wanted nothing more than to fly like the other birds and spends his time trying to figure out how to make his wish come true. He even goes to flightless bird counseling. Listen closely my millennial friends you'll hear a voice from your childhood among the fellow birds. I was 32 and sharing this with my now husband, who pointed it out to me. I had no idea, but it had been so many years since I'd last watched. On Christmas Eve something magical happens.... Also, I feel I should warn you that the poor penguin's butt likes to fall off. *shrug* as a kid I found this hilarious. As an adult, I still find it hilarious, but I also feel the need to say watch it before you watch it with a child. That being said.

My uncle introduced me to this movie at like 5 years old. We had an old VHS with so many Christmas shows and movies recorded on to it. It was a Christmas tradition to watch that VHS every Christmas Eve up until I was in my teens. Then we moved away, and he got married so I hadn't actually seen this movie for years. I had not been able to find a copy of it anywhere and my grandmother had accidently copied over that tape when I was 14. Fast forward to a few years ago, I was telling my husband (fiancé at the time) about this movie and how much I missed my uncle and watching this on Christmas Eve. That Christmas he had bought it for me. It got ruined by some Roommates I had at the time but I was able to repurchase it. Thank you Amazon for having obscure things like this.

This will not be to everybody's taste, but as a long-time fan of Opus 'n' Bill (Opus the Penguin and Bill the Cat, characters from the cartoon strip Bloom County), I was delighted to discover the existence of this little gem. It is now my favorite Christmas show, even over the original 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.'

Opus, as a penguin, cannot fly, but that doesn't stop him from trying, with his faithful sidekick Bill the Cat following in his wake (with mayhem following in Bill's wake). As a last ditch effort to get "wings that work" he writes a letter to Santa Claus. On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus has an emergency that a penguin turns out to be just what he needs to help him out. There's a happy ending; Opus's duck neighbors gain a new appreciation for Opus, and Opus gains a new appreciation for Bill!

Parents of young children might want to preview the show before showing it to the children; there is a brief mention of cross-dressing and also a mention of avian infidelity. I don't remember my kids ever asking questions about either of those, and there is so much other silly stuff going on it likely just goes over the little ones' heads.

One of the all time best Christmas themed animated films ever, and never been shown again after the first view on TV. I had taped Wish for Wings that Work years ago when Bloom County was still in the comics pages and Berke Breathed had not yet retired from a daily strip. I had always loved the humor and his drawing style and when I saw that Wish for Wings was going to be on TV I made sure to program my VCR. My old VHS tape was watched so many times it started to skip in a few places and I even loved seeing the old TV commercials. As the years wore on and my tape degraded even more, I tried making a copy to preserve the movie.
Needless to say I was thrilled when I saw this available on an actual bona fide DVD! Thrilled! We don't keep macadamia nuts any more but i do have my copy of Wish for Wings that Work. Sad that this is not part of the annual Christmas viewing schedule like Frosty and Rudolph.
Anyway, buy a copy you'll be glad you did. Look! it's replaceable like a tire! Nyuk Nyuk! and if you don't get that line you've never seen the movie.

One of the BEST Christmas-time short stories Ever.
This DVD is only about 30 minutes long, but it is a rarely-seen special
that was shown on TV only once back in 1990 or 1991. It is part daily-comic
strip set as animation and part Holiday-themed proverb that centers around
Christmas-time and a character named 'Opus', who is represents an "Everyman"
in this tale and is a 'penguin' who believes he is a 'defective bird' as he can
NOT FLY like a "Normal Bird", as he says. He believes he is 'broken' as his
'wings just don't work'. He looks at himself as a failure and even joins a "support group"
for 'broken people' who are each trying to cope with being less-than perfect.
Kids will hopefully see in this story the reason that each person is already perfect as he or she is
and adults should appreciate the 'humor' of 'bureaucracy used to over-treat a non-issue'.
This is a Classic and no matter your Faith or beliefs, it is a comforting tale that makes all who see it
feel good and wanting to see more adventures of the main characters and his friends.

We're big fans of Bloom County and in this short special, all Opus wants from Santa is wings that work. A hilarious, touching story perfect for adults and children alike. Tongue-in-cheek humor that may go over children's heads but that's okay. We watch it every year!
