Product Description
Wounded Boer War veteran Paul Craddock (Nigel Havers, Chariots of Fire) arrives at Shallowford House in 1902 to establish himself as squire of Sorrell Valley. With the assistance of property manager John Rudd (Glyn Houston, The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Paul learns the ropes and tries his best to balance running a successful estate and being a compassionate landowner.
Paul is immediately captivated by two of the valley's women: Grace Lovell (Fiona Gaunt, War & Peace), a suffragette with a fierce temper, and sensitive Claire Derwent (Prunella Ransome, Far from the Madding Crowd). Following the outbreak of the First World War, Paul has to work even harder to manage Shallowford.
Set in the pastoral landscape of Devon and adapted from the novel by R.F. Delderfield (To Serve Them All My Days), this gripping miniseries pays tribute to the last days of traditional English country life through almost two decades of joyous occasions, devastating losses, and enduring love.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018This is a very enjoyable series for those of us in Downton Abbey withdrawal. I had read Delderfield's "God is an Englishman" series years ago, and was always disappointed that there was no movie/television series; this is probably the next best thing. The transfer to DVD was a bit off in spots, but there was a disclaimer that due to the age of the material this was the best that could be done, and it wasn't enough to detract from the viewing experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2015Loved every minute of it. The actors define their onscreen personas so well, they may as well not be actors. Fell in love with the lovable characters and didn't much like the ones who "rubbed me--and I suspect others---wrong." I lived in England for several years and know the country fairly well, although I shall forever be a "Yank." The filming is breathtaking, and convinces "us" the reason for Paul Craddock's falling in love with and subsequently purchasing the Swallowford estate after he returned from one of England's turn of the century wars, is justifiable indeed. Love connections abound among the characters, whether they be among Paul's farmers or involving Paul himself. The romances are wonderful if you are a romantic, or even if you are not, since all liaisons are intrinsically bound by place and commitment to the land or to timely political causes. I loved it--and was very caught up in each episode, of which there are many. I hate to reveal the plot and hope this review provides enough praise and "zip" as is.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2016Very slow moving but what a joy to have all the great set of values that decent British people have displayed on the screen in a quiet methodical way The hero of the film is a gentleman in the real sense of the word and there are various people who contrast sharply with him in the film .I suppose some people may find the pace just too slow..not I. It is now quite some years since I reviewed this quiet and elegant masterpiece from the BBC and I am even more impressed now .I suppose that one could argue that the last few minutes tied everything up just a little too quickly but at least it was a very happy and honourable ending ..will keep looking at this series for many years to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2018I first saw this series a year or so after it was released in 1978. It is a story of a country squire and his tenants who live in a valley on the coast in Devon in the early 20th century. I thoroughly enjoyed it but thought that it ended rather suddenly. I did not know then that there were only 13 episodes; I just assumed that the Houston TV station that was showing it probably replaced it with something else. The 13 episodes in this series cover the years 1902-1919, but skip all of the years between 1906 and 1913. The books by R. F. Delderfield that this series is based on cover the years 1902-1965 as a multigenerational saga much like The Forsyte Saga. Obviously there were plans for two or three more series but those were never made, accounting for the abrupt ending of the series. From a technical standpoint the series suffers from the 1970s British TV budgetary constraints, which include shooting on videotape instead of film and marginal sets (although the ones in this series are considerably better than the sets in the original version of The Forsyte Saga). The film elements are in reasonably good shape for their age and lack of restoration. If you like period costume dramas then you will enjoy this as I did. The reason I didn't rate it higher than 3 stars has to do with the technical limitations imposed by budgetary constraints and the fact that the story lies unfinished. While the original series can never be finished, the material is interesting enough that I would hope that A Horseman Riding High will someday be remade with modern production values and cover the entire saga.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2015Based on the novel by R.F. Delderfied, A Horseman Riding By is a superb evocation of English country life in the early 20th century. The story of a Boer War veteran who buys a rundown valley estate and his struggles to bring it back to prosperity in the years 1902 to the end of WWI is truly moving. If you like Upstairs/Downstairs or Downton Abbey, which over the same period, you'll like series. I found the print and the sound ( subtitles available) to be very good. The various characters who inhabit the estate farms are well-drawn and handled well by the new squire as he tries to earn their love and respect. I found the daily all-too-human interactions between the the various characters fascinating.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2015We gave up on this about 3/4 of the way throught the series, and donated it to the library. Poorly written and directed, with almost no continuity. The final straw was sitting through a strong man circus show that had nothing to do with the plot. A waste of money.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2015I am a great fan of Delderfield. His book "To Serve Them All My Days" is one of my favorites and I have read it more than once; the TV series was also first-rate. So, having come across the series "A Horseman Riding By" I expected the same excellance in the TV adaptation. Alas, not even close. It's a bit like an amateur high school play. Nigel Havers is OK, but many of the other characters are almost cartoonish, they are so one dimensional and miscast. But worst of all is the dialogue -- it's often laughably poor. At some point Paul's second wife, totally out of character, decides to sleep with a visitor. The whole episode is preposterous and out of place. To be fair, the first few episodes are somewhat promising, buth as time progresses the quality rapidly declines.

DVD ist sehr gut. Bild, Ton und Untertitel sind ausgezeichnet. Ausserdem porträtieren die Schauspieler ihre Charakter genau wie im Buch. Schade das ein paar Leute (Familien Mitglied) sind nicht hier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early 20th century nostalgia of a passing period in English country life.
Very well done TV series, albeit somewhat faded now and with occasional directorial lapses, about an era in British country life gone forever. Good acting and story line. Nigel Havers is terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Nostagia
I enjoy the older versions of these stories. The filming is really good, location is perfect, sets are good and the acting is good. Filming is of the period when it was made in the 70s which is one of the things I enjoy about these productions.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gallop through drama in the 70s
Whilst by no means as compelling as Andrew Davies's adaptation of To serve them all my days, the reviews that surround this release seem to be by viewers unfamiliar with TV drama of the 70s. So let me be upfront about this. A horseman riding by is as well paced as other period sagas from the time and as such should appeal to those that enjoyed Upstairs Downstairs, the Duchess of Duke Street, Wings and myriad other productions from the time.
The story of the innocent and principled Paul Craddock (Nigel Havers) as he buys a thinly disguised estate around Mothercombe on the South Hams in Devon is a compelling one. The early episodes recount his attempts to rebuild the estate with the support of Glyn Houston (a stalwart character actor who you remember for his performances but rarely his name). Whilst in the second half of the series the First World War looms large providing a view of its impact on rural communities as opposed to those in the cities. As with To serve them all my days there are extraordinary shocks in the series as characters depart in dramatic fashion and as with that other series, R F Delderfield's liberal, perhaps even socialist view of the past is painted well. The episodes are written by former Doctor Who producer John Wiles along with the Wings writer Arden Winch and compare favourably with their contemporaries. In fact in one area it does beat To serve them since exteriors are shot on film here rather than OB VT that was increasingly favoured as a budget saver in the early eighties. Thus some of the scenes in the last few episodes shot around 'Combe bay' look fabulous.
This series is not slow, so don't let the other reviews put you off. It is simply a product of its time. So, if, as a viewer, you are familiar with other 70s series and the three camera studio based style that they had then you will enjoy this too!
