Editorial Reviews

Since forming at the end of 2002, Girls Aloud have created their own brand of electro-pop chic. During the past year, while releasing a trio of top three singles, they have also been working on the follow-up to their debut album 'Sound of the Underground'. The result is brimming with the same brand of amused knowingness and louche sexiness as it's predecessor and features the biggest party single of last year, 'Jump', plus 'The Show', 'Love Machine' and their forthcoming Christmas ballad, 'I'll Stand By You'. Includes 2 UK bonus tracks 'I Say a Prayer for You' & '100 Different Ways'. Polydor. 2004.

This album is good like usual. Not as much as the debut or tangled up, but I still like it. They put rare songs in here that are unreleased or b sides as well which is cool. I can’t wait to see what they put on the rest of the deluxe editions coming up.

This album was a great album for them. I love all the songs and just recently in 2024, they re-released it and show cased some B-sides. This one doesn't have the B-Sides but still rocks.

of Girls Aloud ever since i first heard Jump. Now i love the song as it was done by The Pointer Sisters. But Girls Aloud bring something upbeat, catchy and just plain fun to listen to and the video is great as well. With What Will The Neighbours Say? the girls all bring something to the album and each song as well. The girls are super popular overseas and i hear more and more people talking about them everyday.

What i love about the album? What don't i like would be a better question. All the songs bring out a little something different each time i listen to them. Like "I'll Stand By You" it brings out me wanting to be my mate and sticking with them no matter what happens. Then "Here We Go" it just makes me feel like i want to have fun & just let loose with a catchy beat and infectious groove to it.

Also found myself enjoying "The Show", "Hear Me Out", "Real Life", "Big Brother" and "Thank Me Daddy" (kind of a different title for a song, but the message is cool and in your face at the same time).

I even enjoyed the bonus tracks that were included:
"I Say A Prayer For You"
    "100 Different Ways"

both are excellent additions to an album that far surpassed my expectations and is an excellent companion to a great debut album "Sound of the Underground" get both if you have the chance.

You won't go wrong at all.

Girls Aloud are an amazing girl band. They are the most successful British girl band of the 21st century. Though the Spice Girls are the most successful girl band of all time, Girls Aloud have done well at being our new best.

These young women are superb performers that compliment their good looks.
I enjoyed this album but I have enjoyed their "Chemistry" album more. This is an energetic, enjoyable group that has a distinctive sound that I really think is quite enjoyable.

Let me just preface my review by saying I originally checked out Girls Aloud last summer after searching for some pop music better than what the good ol' U.S. of A. had to offer at the time. It just so happens that they were about to release this album, so I imported their debut 'Sound of the Underground' to hold me over. I loved it, so much so that I had 'What Will The Neighbours Say' on pre-order a month before its release. These girls may have come together thanks to a television show, but they mean business...and show no signs of going away any time soon. The album combines many different styles, all undeniably pop but different nonetheless. Here is a rundown:

    01) THE SHOW - the first single...may be a little bit much for those who are used to the pop sound of Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, but with lyrics like "Shoulda known, shoulda cared, shoulda hung around the kitchen in my underwear" you realize these girls have a style all their own. [10/10]

    02) LOVE MACHINE - second single...the song that got me pumped for the album. It sounds like 3 different songs thrown together in one, but don't let the clip Amazon has posted fool you...it's fantastic. You can't be anything other than happy when listening to it. [10/10]

    03) I'LL STAND BY YOU - Yes, it's a cover...and yes, it was covered for good reason. Girls Aloud went to #1 with this single, which was the charity single for Children In Need 2004. They do a nice job. [09/10]

    04) JUMP - Yes, another cover. It was thrown onto this album for those who didn't have the pocket change to pick up the re-release of SOTU. I, personally, think this is leaps and bounds above the original. [10/10]

    05) WAKE ME UP - One of the two best songs of the album. It's one of the darker, harder tracks. It has been my favorite since since I got the album, and no matter how many times I listen to it, it never gets old. Not many songs can pull that off. [10/10]

    06) DEADLINES & DIETS - I won't lie...you have to be in the mood to listen to this one. It's rather early-Sunday-morning-ish and somewhat boring compared to the rest of the album. However, if you listen closely to the lyrics, it's about having an affair with a married man. [09/10]

    07) BIG BROTHER - As much as I love Cheryl, this is the weakest song on the album. Even with subject matter like being watched while taking care of business, the girls just couldn't quite pull it off. It just sounds weird. [07/10]

    08) HEAR ME OUT - I absolutely despised this song for about the first three months I had the album. Sarah's voice annoyed me a bit, and I thought the lyrics were kinda cheesy. It's extremely heart-felt though, as Sarah wrote this one almost as a dead-ringer from her personal experiences, and I think that makes it stronger. [09/10]

    09) GRAFFITI MY SOUL - The other of the album's two best tracks. I sincerely belive this could be a hit in America. "From the table, onto the floor, it's procreation and nothing more." The girls shine on these types of songs! It's so different and catchy that it grabs you in all the right ways and refuses to let go. It's my other favorite. [10/10]

    10) REAL LIFE - This was a B-Side track, and you can see why. It's not the strongest, yet not the weakest. It's just somewhat cheesy and doesn't really talk about anything worthy. [08/10]

    11) HERE WE GO - Another one you have to be in the mood for...it's probably the most bubblegum of the album. Repetative and somewhat annoying at times. [08/10]

    12) THANK ME DADDY - Okay, a proclamation that daddy should thank her for what he doesn't know because she's just a tad bit promiscuous. Another one of my personal faves. This one was written by Kimberley. [10/10]

    13) I SAY A PRAYER FOR YOU - Bonus track written by Nicola. A little bit too sweet and puppy-doggish to be considered serious. [07/10]

    14) 100 DIFFERENT WAYS - Bonus track written by Nadine that honestly shouldn't have been a bonus track. It's far stronger than Big Brother, and really shows off Nadine's power vocals with strong lyrics. [10/10]

So in summary, if you're looking for a good pop album, don't hesitate to order this one. Girls Aloud's second attempt is absolutely fantastic. I've had it since the beginning of December and usually listen to it at least once a day. It's just that good.

B. #3 "I'll stand by you - ein gut gemachtes Cover, #13 "I say a prayer for you", #14 "100 different ways")

Alles in allem, einfach gutes Album. Bin begeistert und kann es mit gutem Gewissen weiterempfehlen, wenn es auch schon aus 2004 ist.
